Yes, a rivalry game. These two in-state opponents have played each other 88 times, first meeting in 1896.
They played each other annually from 1946 until 2014, when this yearly series ended…following the Big Ten’s additions of Rutgers and Maryland, the Big East’s dissolution as a football conference, and Notre Dame’s adopting a 5-ACC-opponent-each-year schedule as part of a trade off for the ACC housing all the Irish’s non-football sports.
It is quite a one-sided rivalry though, as Notre Dame leads the series 58-26-2 (the last time Purdue won was 2007).
It’s a trophy game though, and the winner gets the Shillelagh Trophy
