I really hope that no one takes this out of context, and I absolutely swear that I'm not trying to be facetious, but if playing Joker in such a method way is really what did him in ... that role will endure as something absolutely legendary.

"Apocalypse Now" nearly drove Martin Sheen insane so I'm sure it can happen to other actors who completely engross themselves in their current role.

This is also why Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and many others will never truly become great actors. They're too shallow and self-absorbed to let a role define them.

Good points. I can see this sort of thing happening to Russell Crowe, too. That man practically becomes his characters.

Crowe is insane to start with... nothing I've seen from the trailers makes me think the Ledger role of the Joker is going to be earth shattering, but maybe I'm wrong.

rumor is the new joker isn't going to be humor based a la the first batman.

Here's where my comic book nerdom from early childhood comes in.

This movie is loosely based on Frank Miller's and Alan Moore's work with Batman.

Google "A Killing Joke" or "The Dark Knight Returns" and that will give you the plot somewhat.

Moore made the Joker out to be a homicidal maniac. He paralyzes Commissioner Gordon's daughter.

Miller, who's Sin City and 300 already kicked ass at theaters, take on Batman is gritty, a kind of anti-hero.

The Joker, played by Heath Ledger, is going to portray a maniacal killer that shows no remorse. It will not be a laughing crazy guy. He's going to be a psychopath.

That is the Joker from the comics.

Mark Hamil did a great Joker when on the Batman Cartoon.

Yeah everything Justin said is what I've read. Heath said before he died that he making the character less about the laugh and more about the crazy eyes. The permanent grin was a nice touch, but don't go expecting any explanation of his origin. From what I've read, there is none. He just shows up and kills people.

Nolan has stated that there will be no origin story for the Joker.

I have no problem with that.
