Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Oh the classic “who ya gonna get” argument. Any number of promising coaches who don’t coach the offense out of players.

Okay name them… we are paying $5m plus for our coach who has us constantly in tourney with rock solid recruiting classes but flops in the tourney. Who is the hire that can keep pace with the first two items and can achieve the third….

Shouldn’t be that hard… for a supposed Vol fan, one should know that firing a coach purely on emotion without a replacement lined up who’s biggest advantage is the cheap contract hardly ever works out.

Fire Barnes then get who?

An unknown assistant?

Get Bruce Pearl or Stephen Pearl.. I don’t give a crap. I’m tired of watching Barnes take it up the rear from the officials. Calipari and Pearl never seem to get screwed so badly. Maybe they think Barnes likes it, the way he’s always smiling at them.

I stopped reading after you mentioned Steven Pearl

You are crazy if you want to rely on the the Tennessee AD to replace Barnes on a whim. The importance of that hire already stresses me out considering our history and it is years away. Surely the days of us cheaping out on an up and comer are over right?

It will be Danny White's biggest test.

I’m in the boat that really does love Barnes. But the same crap every year isn’t a coincidence any longer.

I think this is the rational take. He is what he is at this point which is a coach who will have us in the tournament and above 20 wins consistently with an occasional Sweet Sixteen. I appreciate him for what he is. While I hope to one day see the program take that next step to the Final Four, Barnes is miles better than what I grew up watching. When he hangs it up, the program will in all likelihood be as attractive of a job as it’s ever been.

Up and comer is probably the route we will go. Hiring a coach away from another P6 school is very difficult unless that school is happy to see its coach go. Hopefully DW has a better eye for up and comers than many of our previous AD’s.

I have supported Barnes no questions asked his entire tenure here....but I'm done. I'm tired of seeing this. I'm sure we'll win a lot of regular season games down the stretch but come March, this is what we will see. It's time for a change. We can have all the talent in the world but it's useless if we can't utilize it.
I understand the frustration, but you have to appreciate what Barnes has done for us. Made us nationally relevant pretty quickly. When he decides it’s time to retire, we’ll be in excellent position to make a home run hire. If we make a change now with what he’s done for us no coach will want to take a chance here

Going to the tournament every year and losing is better than not going to the tournament every year. We have never won the tournament with any coach so we shouldn't punish Barnes for being good enough to at least make the tournament and give us a chance.
