Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

No, I don't. But it's ridiculous to make the claim that championships don't matter. I swear some people are so sensitive about Barnes that they think anything critical about his job performance is rampaging hate. Barnes is the third best coach we've ever had. Barnes is notorious for losing during the time when coaching legends are made. Both are true.
It's rather clear, fella. You hate CRB.

The constant Pearl comparisons and continued Pearl discussion is exhausting. His time in Knoxville is way over rated and some of y'all still can't move on over 10 years later.
IMO you’re correct that some can’t move on but you’re wrong that his time here is way overrated. Pearl did with basketball what CJH has done in football - took over a program that had been in a decade of misery and quickly made them consistently competitive. CBP has now done the same with Auburn. CRB has done the same with the basketball program except he does it with high character players who represent the university with class. Some of us really value that aspect of Barnes verses Pearl while others don’t seem to give it any consideration at all.

Nah. We are a just a poorly constructed team. I can't complain about what Barnes has done with this roster. I will, however, complain about the roster he's built. Not sure anyone could do much better especially considering the injuries.
The only thing this roster was lacking to start the season was a known quality backup point guard. You might argue that we needed a particular player to perform better but this is CRB’s deepest roster in Knoxville

A roster can be deep, and simultaneously lack pieces. This team lacks a consistent threat to score on the drive, has serious issues with free throws, and also lacks a consistent inside scorer. This may be Barnes’ best coaching job in that he’s developed a tough team defense and adjusted lineups throughout the year to milk scoring out of an often injured lineup. 19 had a depth problem, but had a go to scorer. This team has depth, but no drivers or middle threats to give the guards room to score. Imagine how much Santi would score on a team with Grant…

So this roster lacks an all-SEC caliber player at wing and post? We have capable players at those positions who either haven’t been able to perform their best consistently or stay healthy consistently. I don’t think it’s realistic to expect to lose a ZZZ or JJJ to injury and have a guy sitting on the bench ready to come in and perform at the same high level. JMO of course

Several. Hence my complaint about how the roster was built.

Examples of this “stand up to the NCAA” that aren’t blue bloods? LSU ultimately fired Will Wade. Arizona fired Sean Miller. Standing up to the NCAA is usually a temporary measure that puts the program at risk of more severe punishment.

Feel free to continue worshiping Pearl at the altar, but his fate here was sealed when he lied to the NCAA like it or not. That’s on him. Nobody else.
You left out North Carolina.

Pearl:
70.4% overall winning percentage
57.1% NCAAT winning percentage
50% SECT winning percentage
53.8% NCAAT/SECT winning percentage

Barnes:
66% overall winning percentage
50% NCAAT winning percentage
64.2% SECT winning percentage
59% NCAAT/SECT winning percentage

This idea that Pearl was some postseason magician is just completely made up crap from posters who either don’t know what they’re talking about or rewrote history in their heads. Idk what the next 2 years holds, but Barnes is a S16 trip away and 2 solid regular seasons away from being better than Pearl in every one of those categories.

You didn’t address what I said. I agree we have depth. We lack a scoring threat off the drive, and we lack consistent scoring inside. That puts too much pressure on our guards to score from outside, and allows teams to double shooters. A player like Chandler— who makes the defense collapse to cover a drive, or Grant— who forced doubles inside, would give our shooters breathing room. Watch how tired Santi gets today (and hopefully) tomorrow. He’s working too hard to get looks. We don’t have a depth problem. We have an offensive balance problem.

Pearl also benefited from a much weaker conference with weaker coaching too.

You do realize this is 18-23 yo college players and not the NBA? Every team in the NCAA has several inconsistent players.
But consistently inconsistent is maddening. Let's be real here. Plavi is a great teammate and a big body with an attitude, but he's very limited in his game. ON is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. Key is out of his depth and I was totally wrong about him when we brought him in. As you mentioned, the lack of another PG option is now the elephant in the room. It is what it is, but that's my complaint about how the roster was constructed. Not entirely Barnes fault. Every coach misses in recruiting, but with those 5 star kids he's bringing in, we need to do better getting it right with our "developmental" types instead of having them transfer out. The jury is still out on Barnes and the portal. Maybe he was slow to embrace it but now that it's here to stay, he has to do better there.

I think this team is flawed. All of them are. I also think this team fully healthy was medium odds to make a Final Four. The defense is too good to be ignored. I still think we have a shot at a run, but we’ll have to shoot well from field and FT and have low turnovers.

I think Barnes had Phillips pegged as a high scoring one and done back line player who could average 15 to 18 per game. The potential is there but that did not pan out. If it had this team would be a 1 seed.

The only real reason Pearl had a better win percentage here was because he didn’t have to spend the first two years completely rebuilding the team like Barnes had to. Buzz Peterson got the puzzle pieces here, but he just couldn’t put the puzzle together. And the transfer portal / immediate eligibility didn’t yet exist when Barnes started here, so he couldn’t just throw everybody out and take a bunch of transfers to fast track the rebuild like Dennis Gates was able to do at Missouri.

Oh I get that 100%, but the Pearlites don’t and so I give them that luxury, but even that soon will likely be gone. Only thing they’ll be left with is “well Barnes didn’t take his shirt off and paint his chest orange”.

Another disappointing season as Tennessee folds once again in February/March. Sadly this team won't get past the first weekend in the NCAA's. I know CRB is a good man but I'm ready for another Bruce Pearl type offensive coach. Oh well, the ladies softball is smoking hot! GBO!

Yeah, that Bruce Pearl halfcourt flex offense was such a joy to watch.
