Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

There are only two ways that you get fired at UT if you are making the tournament fairly regularly.

1) You publicly insult the administration and dare them to fire you.

2) You commit violations that necessitate firing you for cause.

AFAIK, Barnes has done neither of these.
They probably said the same thing in Austin

Only mouth breathers call him that.

His claim to fame is 1 final 4.

On average he gets bounced at the sweet 16 or early.

He isn't exactly a tournament threat.

With Kentucky being down this should have been our year but instead we can't get past Bama and fall apart.

Case in point.

Once again Tennessee has over paid for a mediocre coach. NO championships here. He is regular season Rick same as always. Patrick Ewing has a conference tournament championship before regular season Rick could get one here. They should have let him go to UCLA.

Yeah, and if they “let him go to UCLA” and brought in Forbes to go 6-16 here (and without KJ and JS that’s what it would be), then you’d be complaining about the AD not paying to keep an established coach.

Some people just aren’t happy unless they are complaining about something.

We overpaid Barnes but it's not the fans' $ so I'm not sure why we're complaining how much he makes. It would be so much worse than Barnes had we not lucked into hiring him off Tyndall.

I didn’t know much about Syracuse’s circumstances, and it was 20 years ago. I wasn’t looking it up.

I know about Memphis because I was raised there and now live there. Rose started alongside three juniors and a senior. All highly recruited. Two others played in the NBA. Chris Douglas-Roberts was the conference player of the year, an All-American, and averaged 23 points in the NCAAT. Calipari had a veteran team, and Rose was the cherry on top. Totally different than what Barnes had. In fact, it makes a lot of sense when Barnes went 31-7 the next year because everyone came back except Durant.

USC had Mayo and Gibson, who were also NBA players.

I can see that Barnes has some flaws, but it astounds me that our fans try so hard to discredit him. No one does research either to understand why things happen.

I find it equally astounding the mental gymnastics someone will go through to defend him even though my original statement was merely that losing in the second round with that loaded roster and Durant was Barnes worst year as a head coach. This year if we lose in the second round, it will be a bad job by him too but I'd still rate the year with Durant worse. He's a player that should have won an NCAA title like Anthony did a few years before him in the same circumstances. But Boeheim is a much better coach than Barnes.

He's behind Pearl and ahead of Mears.

I loved Pearl but he was so one dimensional. He never has a half court offense. His flex just shoots 3 after 3. His full court pressure and controlled chaos just gets shredded by good guard play. Without transition buckets, its a mess. I still root for the guy though. He was so exciting and we can thank him for that elite 8 banner.

Barnes, even with the HOF wrapped up, is a student of the game. Hes constantly learning and implementing new aspects to his offense and defense. Reminds me of old coaches when the college game went with hurry up offenses and spreads and you had guys like Fulmer and Bowden who never could adjust. Not taking anything away from those coaches but I love watching established coaches mold their game to keep up with the times

Pearl just had a way with getting kids to play their best and to me his in-game coaching was top notch. That's why he's done better at every school he's ever coached at than any other coach at that school.
