Return of Third Down for What?

Should UT keep the "Third Down for What?" hype song?

So, let me ask, is this for Fans or the Team? whatever it takes to get 3rd down stops, they can play "Highway to Hell" if it gets a stop.

Go Vols

Out of respect for our team, the fans shouldn't need a hype song, but it worked and I don't want to go back to the days of half the stadium just sitting there, when a game is in hand I do believe in calling off the dogs, but when it comes to third down , every stop counts, you can't let up, and it's fun to stand up, get loud, and yell for the VOLS. GO VOLS !

I wouldn't mind it if it didn't sound so bad. That weird instrumental, no thanks. I'm all for getting fans involved in the game especially on critical downs but I'm sure they can find something better.

It was cool until they played it on literally every third down, and it got old really fast. By the end of the season, only a fraction of the students were participating. It also takes away from the band. The song needs to at least calm down, with exceptions of maybe 2 or 3 times per game in critical moments.

I'm old so my opinion on what fires up college football players doesn't mean much but my guess would be they need to keep it trendy...so no cool and the gang, AC/DC or anything else more than 5 minutes ago. Let the kids pick or better yet let Butch as he's at ground zero and pretty much nailed it with 3rd down for what.

I have NEVER herd a song get Neyland on their feet before "3rd down for what"

I have NEVER herd a song played by the Band EVER get 50% of Neyland on their feet.

I guess that other teams stole the idea, then it sucks. And they play it every 3rd down. For what? Who needs it? Maybe our team will be good enough for the fans to get loud without the help of a hype song. I've seen fans sitting down on 4th down plays.... With the game on the line..... I get if you don't like needing a hype song, but if you don't want to be the guy standing up and getting loud, watch it on TV, our fan base should support our team the way our team and our coach wants us too, if a hype song is needle then so be it, but don't be the guy telling me down in front, it ain't gonna happen. Just go home and don't come back. I'd rather have 80,000 give their all, than 100,000 pissing me off.

As the summer crawls along, I thought I'd address a polarizing topic. The "Third Down for What" phenomenon of last year energized the team and the crowd without question. That said, I've heard many people suggest that the song takes away from the Pride of the Southland, and also that the university should be cautious in associating itself with Lil' John and his shenanigans. Should this become a longstanding tradition, or should it be on it's way out? I'd love to hear Vol Nation's input.

Such as??????

Keep it.

In 10 years, once Marijuana is legal in Tennessee, LJs shenanigans will be a quaint throwback.

I wasn't sure how I would feel but when they played it at the O&W game, I cringed.
Nothing wrong with the artist or the song (for me), just played out.

This ^^

They played it far too often; EVERY freakin 3rd down, NOT just significant 3rd down's. It was quaint the first few games but at this point it's a bit like doing the Harlem Shake 5yrs after it was relevant. In addition, our fans will end up looking ridiculous. This song will be hung around our necks like UF jorts or LSU corndogs.

Was there a reason the band couldn't play the hook instead of the loudspeakers? It might feel a bit less out of place if the band was playing rather than PA speakers blaring it at 130dB every 3 downs.

I remember the years when no hype was needed. The last 7 years or so have been tough...and I've seen Neyland quiet. It made a difference last year. Maggitt and crew loved it. This stadium can be very loud! I'm good with one more year. Go Vols!!
