Report: Florida already discussing firing Napier

With Cig off the table, I think Florida is going to do everything they can to get either Golesh or Kiffin. Golesh is probably who I would put my chips on since he knows Florida recruiting and they can probably get him at a good price to start. Florida cannot get much worse than what they are already so its also a low risk hire too.

With NIL and being within one of the most talent rich states, Florida can bounce back really quickly.

The question is: do the gator fans cheer on both Florida and State this weekend?

They wouldn't because it would be the perfect hire. I wouldn't take it if I were Golesh though. I'd wait for a better job if no one goes hard after him this cycle. I have a feeling he will be coaching somewhere else next year though. A lot of money being thrown around for good coaches and the pool of hirable coaches is shallow.

The UF job is an amalgam of conflict.

* The fanbase is sick of the fact that we have not been nationally competitive for some time, and so have a short fuse. The fan base is also relentlessly optimistic and would give a new coach at least 3 years to get it going in the right direction, which is enough now with the portal.

* The state has plenty of talent. For whatever reason, the program has done ultra terribly in recruiting offensive linemen.

* The university wants to satisfy the fan base to keep those dollars coming in. Yet, the university often seems to place football success in the bottom half of its list of top 10 priorities.

* Playing in the SEC means plenty of media attention and money to build a playoff caliber team. Yet, an SEC schedule means that you face the possibility of playoff elimination almost every week.

Doesn’t matter. He’d easily be a home run hire there in the midst of their run with Muschamp, Shark Humper, Mullen, Napier.

The problem for teams with coaches on hot seat is holding on too long and not ripping Bandaid off.

Franklin can easily pick wherever he wants to coach and likely get whatever job he wants. Outside of Mullen, Florida has picked unqualified coaches for the greater part of 15 years. Franklin solves that.

Plus i refuse to believe Franklin wouldn’t adapt his philosophy after getting fired just 2 weeks after being #3 in the country lol

The issue is that NIL has negatively hurt Florida in regards to advantages over other schools.

I don't think he would adapt his philosophy. He's relatively young (53), but he's been a college head coach for 15+ years. I think he is what he is at this point. All of the QBs he had at PSU seemed like carbon copies of each other and I think they all underachieved, especially guys like Hackenburg and Allar, who were super-highly recruited. Three of those guys still ended up getting drafted, and Allar was thought to be a potential first-round pick had he went out after last year.

It’s not going to be because it makes to much sense for them. They want a title yesterday and it doesent work that way anymore or probably ever.

I, for one, as a Tennessee fan would never want Golish as a gator. Those resources and that kind of consistent speed would be deadly.

I wonder if Franklin thought he had enough NIL resources to win at the level that was expected. I don't care what anyone else thinks. I'd be curious to hear him on it. And I doubt seriously Franklin would go from a place where meeting the playoffs and then having a down year gets you fired to a place like Florida where the expectations outstrip the resources.

I don't want to be a jerk here but I don't trust Florida's AD and their competence. Why would you let it leak that you are firing a coach early in a week before a game and not fire them until after the game. What does that do for the team going in to play Miss State or the recruiting?

I always thought FL had a strong athletic dept with football being top priority. Has that changed? I’m sure academics is top priority but they still accept athletes with marginal grades - correct?

A friend of mine is a Gator fan. Knoxville family and a rowdy kid, so he decided to cheer on the dog biting our ankle incessantly. Anyway, we’re still great friends because there’s more to life. He told me a few weeks ago that Florida would never be good again due to NIL and their downswing during that time. However, I kind of disagree. Not be political in any way, but Florida could swing things back with a Mike Leach kind of hire: that is, an outside-the-box game changing type of personality that recruits will want. Of course, the money will have to be there and I don’t know the minds of the big money UF donors.

Coaching searches are going to be very interesting in the future. Salary levels have increased to the point where it’s not quite as large of a jump from one Power 5 program to another and NIL has helped to address the inherent recruiting disadvantages some programs have.

They’ve been discussing firing him for a year now. This isn’t news. He barely saved his job last season. If he wins this weekend, he stays alive a little longer.
