recruits and Tennessee

Austin TX is light years cooler than Knoxville. The school is better academically and has a much bigger fanbase. Knoxville has the lamest strip of any sec college town I have been to...I have been to 6 other sec schools. UT's campus is pretty ugly as well. I went to UT and my uga, aub and vandy friends constantly make fun of our campus and how junky knoxville is as a town. I somewhat agree with

T-R-O-L-L somewhere else, little one. I know it gets lonely in mommy's basement, but we really don't want you here either.

Lets compare some...UT-Austin has 38K students, UT has 21K. Austin has 1.7 million population, while Texas has 25 million. Knoxville has 700K, while TN has 6.5 million. Pretty easy to see why the Longhorns have a bigger fanbase. Basic math would prove that.

I will agree that UT's strip sucks, but I am not an alcholic, so I never went there anyways. And of course UT campus is not great when you compare it to UGA and Auburn, they probably have two of the nicest campuses around, definetly in the SEC. As for Vandy, you and your friends are idiots if they think their campus looks better. The only thing Vandy has going for it when it comes to campus is being close to downtown Nashville.

I am beginning to think some people are just 2 stupid/blind/or wasted when they are on UT's campus. Or they just have not been there since the 90s

Last time I was in Knox, I was impressed with all of the improvements that were complete or underway. I know there are still several projects that are being planned. As a matter of fact, IIRC, there will be some older buildings being torn down after the football training facility project is complete this year, correct? I think I recall that the consolidation of the Athletic Department would vacate other facilities that would be torn down and rebuilt as new education buildings or something. At any rate, the improvements thus far have been wonderful and are elevating UT's campus appearance and overall atmosphere for the entire student body, especially student athletes.

I realize that with UT being as rich in tradition as it is, the consequence is a campus that was originally designed to be much smaller with lots of aging buildings to maintain. It seems like the Admin has done a pretty good job though of recognizing the need for modernization and renovations. The efforts to date have been pretty impressive and if they continue, UT shouldn't have to worry about losing recruits based on campus condition or atmosphere, IMO.

Now, there isn't much we can do to offset the excitement that some will find in large cities, but for kids interested in the outdoors, you cannot beat East Tennessee. Rivers, mountains, caves, forest, close proximity to the ocean, Knoxville has plenty to offer those interested more in these types of surroundings than the hustle and bustle of a city.. Plenty of great recruits out there looking for these qualities over city life anyway. UT has plenty to offer that so many other schools can't, so we should emphasize those aspects whenever possible.

Go VOLS!

It amazes me how people can down on a school like UT. I would be proud to attend that school. I love the old buildings. That school has history and its nice to actually see it. I remember the first time I saw it I thought it was beautiful.

You're beautiful, UT, just the way you are.

Except that metal sculpture thing. :)

I believe both Texas and Trojans are projected as both top ten next year.Somebody called it all about winning. We need to thankful what we get and then you still have to coach them and maybe this new group can do that

Take off your orange bias. Have you been to other schools? Our strip is pathetic and downright embarassing. I was driving around uga's campus a few weeks ago and it was vastly nicer than UT's. UT's campus is a landlocked concrete jungle. I didnt fully realize how dated knoxville is until I moved to Chattanooga 3 years ago. Chattanooga is much nicer.

I am a hardcore vol fan, but I can very easily see why recruits would pick Texas and other schools. UT is middle of the pack when it comes to education and lower tier when it comes to campus beauty.

I have been to each of the cities and schools you mentioned. None of them can offer what Knoxville and Tennessee can offer. Knoxville and the surrounding area have better climate, not too hot-not too cold, clean beautiful lakes and fishing, beautiful mountains and skiing, a beautiful campus which includes rustic and modern facilities and buildings, outstanding educational experience which are continually improving, and an unprecedented working relationship with the Oak Ridge Laboratory. In the last ten years, I have introduced the University of Tennessee to almost 100 families who have moved into the area and they are blown away by UT and the surrounding area. These are people who are well educated and many have children who have competed in athletics at different Universities from all over the Unite States and have falling in love with East Tennessee and our University. For those of you who prefer the other cities and Universities, I hope you take the opportunity to move closer to them and enjoy them.

TBH they dont Tennessee has everything they have, and Dooley should pitch " were down but your damn right were going to get back up, now son do you want to be apart of a fresh new start for Tennessee...do you want to be apart of the team that got UT back on the map". Thats what you pitch MR DOOLEY!

If he flips, it doesn't seem like a big surprise. Big time in-state player going to the flagship university at a time when their championship winning head coach seems to be in a little trouble after a couple of lackluster seasons. Kinda makes me wonder why the hell Fulmer couldn't get Donta Hightower under almost identical situations.

i thought one of our rules was not to bash our coach?
the same people come on this site and every time they say something it negative about the coach. why cant we get this stopped? granted there is no reason to praise him yet but why do we have to keep hearing bad things from these trolls? mods make it stop until its time to bash him

Seen posts where recruits may look elsewhere after their visits to other schools. I was wondering what does schools like Arkansas and Texas have that Tennessee does not possess. I mean in my opinion the Vols have a better fan base, according to many posts an excellent facility being prepared, and one of the best if not the best atmospheres than any stadium in the U.S. on Saturday. It's a great possibility that Dooley can offer playing time and also be seen in nearly 90% of the time on a major station on Saturdays. Is there something more that other colleges can offer that Tennessee can not provide?

texas i can see, arky hell no.

I guess reading comprehension is not something you need to have in Chattanooga. :good!: Knoxville's strip is awful, but the strip has nothing to do with UT. It is not run or operated by the campus, so not sure why that should reflect on UT being bad. I did not choose to go to UT because of what restaurants/bars were on the strip. But maybe you do?

I am pretty sure they are Top 5 in SEC, and at 101 for public universities. But then again I would argue that it all depends on what your major is, overall academics should not matter.

I majored in Logistics, so from my standpoint UT is a top program.

I just do not understand what you are trying to argue. One second you are talking about UT's campus, then the strip, then Knoxville being outdated. Please pick a topic. Your next post will probably be comparing states. I honestly think you should stop by UT in the spring this year. Chattanooga is not that far. Walk around, see the construction going on and the new buildings, and def check out the Agriculture campus, their garden is magnificent.

I by no means have stated that UT has the best campus in the SEC, but I do think you are portraying it much worse than it is. I walked around campus for 4 years, in every season, under all weather conditions. I have also spent countless times riding around campus on a bike taking pictures and the beauty is definitely there. But I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I felt the same way. I was on campus from 1997-2002. I always thought it was incredibly attractive. I wanted to major in Architecture, so the schools I visited were known for their architecture programs in our region (UT, Miss. State, NCSTATE, UNC-Charlotte), and of those UT's campus was far superior.

The strip goes in cycles, sometimes it is up and awesome, and sometimes it looks like a run-down back alley. Having walked to and from all parts of that campus and being an architecture major, I thought there were some really stellar sites.

I have never understood the idea of bashing UT's campus. Some of the older building's were beautiful, especially for the time period they were constructed.

I am sure many of these people could travel to a city like New Orleans and call it run-down without ever seeing the unique nature and feel of the city itself. I have seen pristine campuses (the Citadel, UNC-Chapel Hill) and they certainly have their merits. But, I would gladly relive my time at UT instead of a re-do at another institution.

Here is an interesting side note. I had a great friend from High School who went to West Point. When he graduated (I was still a junior) he came to UT for the UT v. Bama game. His exact quote: "I wasted four years of my life, look at this place. Awesome!".

Quick question. I haven't been to Knoxville in a few years, can't wait to visit again. Does anybody know what they are building behind the rock? I see a large building in the background, maybe a parking garage being built in a picture I saw yesterday.

I really enjoyed UT, downtown Knoxville is really fun and the people in Tennessee are some of the nicest people on earth. I think the campus looks fine and will continue to look better when the Master Plan is complete . With that being said the best four years of my life were in Austin, TX and if I could do things over, I would without hesitation move to Austin and attend Texas over ANY other school. Austin is living in it's Golden Age and it's a special city, it's a lot like Nashville in many ways. I think Nashville is one of the most underrated cities in the US and I am not from Tennessee.

Really depends on what you majored in at Tennessee in regards tot he quality of education. Business, Engineering, Architecture, Education, and so forth are top notch programs and the quality of education is as good as anywhere. On the other hand, Liberal Arts is medicore at best and my high school was easily harder than Tennessee my first two years, although I felt the upper level classes were challenging.

^If I remember correctly they moved the rock across the street a few years ago because it was going to be in the way of the new fraternity house/houses. And the most recent location will not be in front of the construction of the new music building. I have not been on campus in about a year, but I believe they tore down the whole music building and are starting from scratch. Should be awesome when it is finished.

I hear you on Austin, I have never been there, but have always heard lots of great things about it. From what I understand it is like a trendy version of Nashville since it is more so live/alternative music instead of country.

Tennessee doesn't exactly have the in-state talent pool that Texas does.

Living down in Texas they now have the Longhorn Network which is a great tool when a recruiter tells some kid's parents that they will be able to watch their son play on tv every Saturday.
