Recruiting

Average 10 or more wins a season and start winning the East Division every other year. Short of those two, lots of bag men.
I have no problems with us using bagmen.
Just don’t let me Or anyone else know about it.
It’s like the sausage maker.
I don’t want to know how it’s made.
Just make me a delicious bratwurst to go with my beer and pretzels.

Have a feeling the Butch promised things he couldn't deliver and then didn't develop the players. Pruitt doesn't pull any punches and most likely tells them the truth, that they must earn PT in practice and coaches them hard.

Josh Dobbs was the reason Butch had any sucess at UT.
This is a 100% true statement, you just boiled down the entire situation-and put it in one line! It is just that simple. Don't try to argue with the boy butch worshippers, they have an unnatural love for the guy.

Only "star gazers" would see butch as a better recruiter. Pruitt has recruited according to NEED in our lineup..and as I posted last year, we have NEVER in my lifetime signed a class that filled as many NEEDS with quality players as this past class.

2 future ALL SEC OTs
Freshmen AA. LB. too too
A total of 13 "big uglies" when we were completely depleted on BOTH lines
Thompson, A. Taylor, ...both freshmen SEC
Crouch (over Clemson begging him)

We still have many slots to fill this year and are already top 20 class when almost everyone above us is already full. We should easily end up top 15 and if we close strong we could be top 10 this year.

We have some under rated kids coming too...Hyatt could have an IMMEDIATE impact as slot WR as a freshmen next year..he is barely rated a 4 star, but was just Laser timed at 4.31 in his 40, and won fastest player title in the SE regional Opening Camp held in Charlotte NC...fastest player there...with all of the Clemson, UGA, Bama etc guys there too...this kid can be something we dont really have now...a true "Burner" deep threat that can blow the top off of a defense and keep them from EVER putting 8 or 9 men in the box to stop our running game. Defenses will have a choice...commit a safety to stop the run and get beat over the top..or commit a safety to help deep and get run all over. We need 1 or 2 more good WR this class to help with Palmer, Johnson, and the young ones.

We have a tougher schedule next year than this year...but Pruitt is developing players very well and I think we can maybe challenge for the East next season if we can get decent QB and WR play.

What is it gonna take for us to start getting back up in the top 10 in recruiting. And How did butch stay there and suck on the field and pruitt not recruit as good as him so far and his recruits product better results. Recruiting makes no since to me! Look at Georgia they get alot of the 5* talent and they would be right up there with Alabama with on field results but they find a way not to.

Maybe, just maybe recruiting isn’t as important as the media would lead you to believe?

I don’t care if he recruits like ass as long as we get big dubs.

Pruitt has recruited some studs. Not sure if Butch recruited better. Thompson, Wright, Morris, Henry T... how many freshman all-SEC did butch recruit his first 2 years? Trey Smith yes. Any more? Can’t recall
He did however they became famous at other schools.

Basically Butch recruited well, but was a jackass who couldn’t develop talent or coach effectively. Now that recruits saw his snake oil sales pitch didn’t prove true, they want Pruitt and Tennessee to prove they can do it first.
Butch actually did not recruit that well. His legacy class was mostly just numbers. What was it 31 players or something?

Recruiting stars and talent are 2 different things. While IMO Pruitt is not yet a proven HC he’s a proven talent evaluator and developer on D and he’s put together a staff who do same on both sides of the ball.
I trust Pruitt & Co.s evaluation of 3 stars better than most public evaluations of 4 stars made by the recruiting services.
So count me out over most of the recruiting hype. I’ve seen way too many high ranked busts. While 5 stars are 5 stars, other than hype from camps and PR there’s very little distinction between many 4 stars and high 3 stars.
As long as Pruitt & Co continue to ID and reel in their top targets I’m confident they’re rebuilding our team so I could really care less if we finish #7 in the SEC or in the top 3. IMO the margin is so small between #3 and up that “class rank” is subjective at best.
Our rebuild is on the right track in terms of personnel anyway. When we start winning we’ll start attracting more 5 stars. Or not.
Very well put.

Butch's classes were helped by an influx of legacies and questionable guys, either by health, academics, attitude. Stars do not take these factored into account. Only ability and offers. This is why Butch had so many misses and others. Add to that level of development, the SEC East being down during his tenure and you get some mixed results, better win totals, but nothing else for it. Once the East picked back up, his totals went down and his reputation recruiting suffered from multiple issues. CJP is building from that mess with a stronger East to contend with, plus he's not just trying to win the signing day trophy. Inside the top 20 classes are plenty of kids who can play, it's just easier when you can be nearer the top. As his, and this teams, reputation grow. The rankings will follow.

Dobbs.Malone. Kamara. Hurd, Barnette, Maybin, Sutton. There was talent. Butch had two year window with this talent and accomplished nothing but small bowl games.

It ain't over. We're doing okay right now and we'll have some surprises as usual. I think they will sway Hardy to come back.

Butch recruited for stars, Pruitt recruits based on his evaluation system. He has said it multiple times that he has characteristics he looks for at each position as well as the intangibles and over all makeup of the player. You can tell by the body types, and you will see more instances of recruits with fewer stars coming out of high school and being developed into really good football players. There is a good energy around the program right now and it seems that the entire organization is working together. Vols are still in on some top prospects that are announcing on it closer to signing day next month, and I think they will end up with a couple at least.

Yes, recruiting is not an exact science. Look at the top player in the state as an example, as we are not even recruiting him.....overrated.

Butch’s biggest problem was in-game decision-making. He made so many horrible mistakes in tight games. That, and a dreadful strength/conditioning program, which really caught up with our team.

Evan and Elliott Berry perhaps should be on this list? Evan IMO was one of the most under utilized talents that ever did time on The Hill. Playing for the Cleveland Browns as a wide out.

Recruiting is fine currently, but we could use a couple of splash recruits to really put us over the top. Just look how he's completely changed both lines. Last year, they couldn't stop anyone. This year, we have one all-sec and two all-freshman on the offensive line, a several other solid pieces. On the D-Line, even without or best player, we have had seen huge improvement. Garland made a couple of great plays tonight, Emerson has had a great year, Middleton has been our best D-lineman, and outside of Emerson, none of them are even 4 stars. This staff can develop players.
