Recruiting Tidbits

I'm almost positive Crompton was a 4*. But, that doesn't mean he wasn't highly recruited. Many wanted him. He went through a lot here. We really failed him more than he failed us. You gotta give the kid some props. Dude endured more sh*t than most college kids.

He was a 5 in some services. He was ranked higher than Tebow and Perriloux

Saban, the standard for coaches according to many on this site, must be a stupid recruiter.

Alabama
20 recruits
12-4 stars
2-5 stars

That is about 75% of his recruits being 4 star or better. Jeez, some of you must think he needs to replace some of these guys with 3 and 2 star players? Bolderdash. STARS COUNT!! Sometimes luck affects the outcome.

Well, I guess that settles it - the stars are what makes the coach. But I guess Saban needs more 5* and throw out those 4* after going 9-3 with all those stars. The only other explanation is that Saban is not as good as everyone thinks. Either way, it is confusing.

Strange recently had an article in the KNS on recruiting ranks, of all the All American teams members 25 in total on there, 17 were 3*, 3 each were 4* and 5*, and 0ne was a 2*, he was using the Rivals database for the recruiting rankings of the players the atricle was entitled Mike Strange: All-American list filled with 3 -stars

I think it is pretty revealing that so many slots were filled by players that were just supposed to be good college players, while so few came from the can't miss rankings. Coach's evaluation and coaching them up still matters more than a so called recruiting experts opinion of their skills, is what all this tells me at the end of the day. How else does a 2 star player center from TCU end up on the list.

Although I agree that the star system is highly overrated, just read Meat Market to see what a joke most college coaches find the star rankings to be and how very little they actually pay attention to them in recruiting, your numbers are obviously skewed as there is a a lot more 3* players than 4 or 5*, thus more opportunities.

Star rankings are a tangible way for geeks on message boards to follow recruiting, but IMO have very little bearing on actual talent. Does this mean that all 4 and 5* players are over-rated? No, but it definitelty isn't the end all be all of recruiting.

Guys, we can look at the stars all we want to, but in the end, it really won't begin to tell us a whole lot about anything. There are way too many unmeasureable factors in cfb. The biggest one out there is heart. How do you explain Reveiz this year otherwise?

4 or 5 stars I think we are forgetting who the coach was. In Fulmer system you could put as many star as you wanting and it would not have matter. You cant develope talent in a system where your trying to run out the clock from the first play of the game. Now my point of view is you give Dooley the kind of talent Fulmer HAD and we are a happy bunch I CAN PROMISE YOU.

While I don't completely disagree with the sentiment since many times there are diamonds in the rough, your comment neglects the fact the 02-10 is possibly one of the roughest stretches in UT football history. Perhaps b/c we are relying on too many 3* players (along with too many 5* busts). Let's hope we get a few Luke Stocker types in this bunch coming in.
Go Vols!

Luke Stocker types gonna turn the program around? He was decent, but please. What I will always remember about Stocker is the 2009 Kentucky game.

I'd put Greg Jones under special circumstances. He was starting to come along but a family tragedy sort of derailed his career.

Brad Cottam was drafted and played in the NFL. Fellows started and got accolades. Gaines started as well.

Bret Smith was a role player.
