Recruiting rankings thread

What you should be looking at is the AVERAGE per player not the total points, at this point.The SEC says you can only sign 25 and the rankings only consider the top 25. UT has more commits so they have a higher number total but several SEC schools have a higher average per player. That means unless those schools start taking 2-3 star guys they are going to pass UT when they fill their class. CBJ has done a good job of recruiting but don't expect UT to be in the top 5, might get in the top 10.

Avg star rating is flawed for the simple fact that it doesn't take into effect the different levels of stars. There is a difference in a 5.6 3* and a 5.8 3*.

Also, if Bama signs 20 players and has a total of 74 stars, their avg star rating is 3.70. If TN signs 25 and has a total of 89 stars, that's a 3.56 avg star rating. This scenario is using 14 4* and 6 3* for Bama. I used 14 4* and 11 3* for TN. Bama gets a higher star rating for the class even though both classes signed the same amount of 4*. TNs top 20 would be equal to Bama's in this scenario, yet on paper we show a lower avg due to numbers.

Not only that, there's this stupid mentality so many have that quantity doesn't matter. I'd rather have 11 3*s than 6 3*s.

On rivals our ranking based on average points per commit moved up to tied for 5th place. This speaks to our ability to maintain a very successful class!

Wasn't clear, but were there any new players in the Rivals100 in today's update? Rivals250 comes out tomorrow, was wondering who dropped and which Tennessee commit could possibly jump them

Anyone have a summary of the moves made by our boys in the new Rivals250? There was a Rivals article stating Vols recruits made "big moves." I knew Hurd got his 5* and Helm moved up to the top TE (all great!), but was looking for a summary of all moves, ex:

Helm: previously ranked 1xx--> 110, 5th TE-->#1.

So on...

I'm sure a list will be generated when all the updates are complete....

don't forget Mouhon made a big move into the R250

FYI was posted in another thread:

Hurd went from #19 to #21 -2
Bates went from #59 to #63 -4
Kelly went from #61 to #66 -5
Helm went from #175 to #110 +65
Payne went from #206 to #208 -2
Booth went from #239 to #242 -3
McDowell went from #242 to #247 -5
Gaulden went from #247 to N/R -4
Mouhon went from N/R to #145 +106

Net change = +146 :)

Oh thanks! Looks like most people stayed approx. the same, but Mouhon and Helm jumped big! Nice.

Sucks Gaulden dropped out of the 250. Hope a good Sr. season changes that.

Sorry if it's already been discussed, but does anyone know when the position ranking will come back out?

We are looking great on both Hendrix and Malone right now. I know that rivals points don't mean a lot, but it is still interesting to think about. As far as my quick calculations go, our 19th and 20th recruits are worth 165 on rivals. If we add Malone and Hendrix, they would be worth 188 (135 for 6.0, and 53 for #30 overall) and 150 (120 for 5.9, and 30 for his 114 ranking) respectively. This means we would add an additional 173 points to our team total (gaining 338, and losing the 165 from Wolf and Bryant). This would put us at 2484 points total. Last year that would have put us at #8 overall, and only 12 points behind #7. This is without gaining any other 5.8 or better recruits!

If we add Hendrix and Malone, we would have an excellent shot at a top 5 class. Based on last years numbers, we would only need 177 more points (after Malone and Hendrix).

I would be happy with ~ 2500. Using the last 10 years to estimate, they would give about 80% chance for a top 5 spot, with the average over those years being around #4.

2013 -> #8
2012 -> #2
2011 -> #2
2010 -> #4
2009 -> #3
2008 -> #4
2007 -> #6
2006 -> #4
2005 -> #3
2004 -> #2

You can really only compare the numbers to last year's rankings because they changed up their system making 04-12 irrelevant. IMO the best things that help us are big time 4-5 star players going to places like UVA, Rutgers and even North Carolina instead of the Alabama, UGA, Florida and Notre Dame. Elijah Hood being a good example because he decommitted from Notre Dame and is probably going to end up a Tar-Heel. Anytime this happens it could potentially be good for us as it keeps the upper echelon teams from getting them, therefore lowering their points.

I was looking at how Alabama might finish this year in recruiting, and saw that they have seven Rivals Top 100 players committed, and that they have a good shot at five more of the top 20 players. Besides Marlon Humphrey, who everyone thinks will go to Bama, the #1, 3, 15, and 18 players all list Alabama as "high."

Using a horse-racing analogy, I am elated that we have a horse in the Kentucky Derby, but unfortunately, Secretariat is in the same race.

We should still be #1. It's completely dumb that they only count the top 20. Quantity matters too, you know.

They do it so that a team with 30 3 stars won't have more points than a temam with 20 4 stars. Makes some sense IMO.

In all reality, only the best 20 players in any class have a chance to contribute. Identifying exactly who those 20 guys are, however, is a bit of a chore, but I would say that on the average, unless your coach is just some kind of talent evaluating genius who lands every single diamond in the rough there is (and ddiapos wasn't that guy) you would be happier with the smaller class of higher rated guys.
