This is as close to an apples to apples comparison you'll find for Mullen at Miss St. and Mullen's potential at Tennessee:

Tommy Tuberville was the coach at Ole Miss before he went to Auburn. Tubs at Ole Miss averaged 6.25 wins a year overall, and 3 wins a year in the SEC. Tubs at Auburn averaged 8.5 wins a year, 5.1 wins a year in the SEC. So Tubs was just over two games better overall and in the SEC at a place like Auburn that has considerably better history, resources, facilities, etc. than Ole Miss.

Mullen averages 7.6 wins per season overall at Miss St., 3.6 wins per year in the SEC. If he can average 9.6 wins per year in Knoxville, and 5.6 wins per year in the SEC, he'll have a street named after him in Ktown before he's done.

Nice post

For all my Mullen criticism, I’m a realist too, and understand that there are limited actual possibilities

Therefore, I would give a Mullen hire B-

Upgrade to Butch as a coach
Better shot to at least win some division titles
Possibly could win the SEC eventually

Ziti's comment about "highest floor" got me thinking... who would be the "safest" choice? Everyone know's AD's and big money will want to be as "safe" as they can be.

If Mullen has the highest "floor" does that make him the safest bet?

Yes, unless Gruden comes, because the perception is he is elite

Could not disagree more. What exactly in his resume screams “This guy is most likely going to wet the bed”?

Very little time as a HC, winning at a school that should win and has won big before and he has better players than his competitors. UCF is one hell of a job. I don't understand why people don't talk about that more.

The fact that there are proven college coaches that would ignite the fan base just as much as Gruden. The fact that he hasn't coached in 10 years. The fact that he's never been HC in College. The fact that he hasn't had to deal with the stress and scrutiny that comes with being HC at UT. The rigors of recruiting all year long. The fact of dealing with boosters and the NCAA compliance (he's already made statements about NCAA rules about time with players). Shall I go on?

I agreed that he could kill it here, but the risk is much greater with Gruden.

Don't get it twisted, I'm not opposed to gruden, just think if you offer him that much money and power the the expectations are that much higher as well.

OK, all valid arguments.

I love the passion that JG has for coaching & mentoring young players. He obviously loves what he does. IMO that trumps the other concerns.

Complete dearth of HC experience at even the P5 level, much less at an elite level, and an offensive system that I believe is questionable (at best) as to whether it would work in the SEC. Frost would be a big risk at Tennessee, IMO. I think he'd be a homerun for a PAC12 school or Nebraska.

Mullen is safe if by safe you mean 8-9 wins a year. I want to hire a guy that opposing fans are scared of. I want a coach that has Saban doing prep work in the offseason cause he knows we will be the toughest test. I want a coach that will immediately take us to the top of the east. I’m ready to be elite again.

I hear ya -- but sometimes high reward comes with high risk. You're a Frost guy. If his system were to work in the SEC the way it is at UCF, that would be a huge reward. If it doesn't and SEC defenses are too good for it, which I believe is quite possible and even likely... then it would be a complete flop.

I would imagine ADs and big money boosters would prefer less risk in this type of investment.

Would it be fair to compare Mullen coming to Tennessee to Tubberville leaving Ole Miss and heading to Auburn?

The circumstances seem similar to me.
