'18 Recruiting Forum: Official South Carolina Pre-Game/Game Thread

Everyone says if you play Alabama, they beat you up and you'll feel the effects the next week. There's some stat IIRC that teams usually lose their first game after playing Alabama.

But if you think about it.... JG and AT had most of the game off. Whoever replaces Trey Smith should be fresh. Daniel Bituli only played a half. Was it Osborne and Abernathy who missed the game and should be back this week? We rotate all our backs a lot so they all should be good. Palmer and Murphy missed all or most of the game. Etc....

Just random ramblings but idk if the post-Alabama hangover will really be that big of a deal for us.

Not this year. I posted this earlier in this thread when someone mentioned it:

Alabama opponents the week after:

W Louisville - Indiana State
W Arkansas St. - Tulsa
W Ole Miss - Kent State
W A&M - Arkansas
W Lafayette - Texas State
L Arkansas - Ole Miss
W Missouri - Memphis

Carolinas latest injury info that I've found....

  • usc OC McClendon said the team is as healthy as they've been since the start of the year.
  • They get their best pass rusher, DJ Wonnum back. Had 6 sacks last year. Defensive coordinator said he will play as much as he wants.
  • Jake Bentley had a bum knee but supposedly got better over the bye week.
  • Jr RB AJ Turner returns from concussion protocol.
  • KC Crosby, senior TE, hasn't played much this year and still has a cast on a hand so unlikely he plays this week. Talented and reliable TE. Their TE play overall has been lackluster and losing Hurst to the draft and this kids injury are a big reason why.
  • OrTre Smith is young big bodied receiver, mostly played TE. He's out, further hindering their depth their.
  • Senior corner Nick Harvey will miss the game. Kinda sucks and a reserve, so no big loss for them.
  • Senior starting safety JT Ibe will miss the game.
  • Senior OLB Eldridge Thompson is out for the year. He had like 5 tackles on the season so he kinda sucks too. (fairly common theme against gamecocks)

If the starter who is out kinda sucks, what does that say about the replacement? This is a Muschamp D, he knows who his best players are. The SC papers have quoted McClendon as saying he will focus on the running game to give Bentley some relief. But their RB's are mediocre. With our issues at the off safety, it's probably fortunate that Tre Smith and Crosby are injured. Taylor, Thompson, Buchanan and Warrior should be able to handle things adequately.

This game is very winnable depending on which team shows up Will it be Auburn team or the Bama team?

I was hammered all year for saying this team had a bunch of soft quitters. It looks like everybody else is finally seeing that.
It's a combination of things. I wouldn't chalk it all up to "a bunch" of soft quitters. You have a group that fits your description. And others that are just not good enough to play to the level required to be good in this league.

Have no feel for this game ATP
I don't either.

SC has been underwhelming in a year where some thought they were the #2 in the east behind UGA.
They pulled out a crazy game against Mizzou that was headed to blowout land before the flood. Didn't look much better against A&M less a handful of plays toward that probably made the game closer than it really was.

UT has their biggest win of the season on the road followed by the predictable Bama outcome. Smith is out and JG is beat up.

Weird game to try and handicap. Good game to finally get going early.

A lot rides on the QB this game. With Trey out, there's not much leadership on the OL. JG/KC is going to have to direct traffic and make good decisions quickly. If we follow the Auburn template, we can win. SCAR's secondary can be exploited, and we have a QB who can throw downfield and big, physical receivers going against their backups. That's a mismatch that will be there all night. We'll have Tae and Bituli back for the full game on D, and Banks and JJP could add extra help. Warrior should have opportunities for INTs and now's the time for him to finally snag one.

I'm sure it would mean a lot to Trey if his teammates win this game for him. If they're going to step up, rally around him and finish the season strong, this is where it starts.

agreed. that would be a nice change of pace.

Not rocket science, but this game will come down to QB play, field position, playing mistake free football, and coaching adjustments. I know that the jury is still out on Helton, but after seeing what we were capable of v Auburn, I like our ability to make offensive adjustments a lot better than USCe can. I have not be impressed at all by McLendon at OC. I think that there is an edge to be had there in the coaching matchup. As erratic as our QB play has been, Bentley has been as bad, if not worse, than anything that UT has seen. As long as we can avoid a stinker of a performance like we had against UF, we can win this game.

Apparently SC is one of the top teams nationally on 3rd down defense. We have been awful on 1st and 2nd downs. That doesn’t bode well for us. Hopefully they’re more creative on those downs tomorrow than they have been
