Two anomalies with UT football the past few years: the team doesn't play its best in Neyland and the players start slow. They've shown they can be more focused OTR and can ride the momentum when they get things going against a beatable team. If that continues to hold true, SCAR sets up better than later home games. Need to win this one.

I must admit. I am nervous about this game. No Tennessee team has ever beaten a Muschamp coached team. Either at Florida or USC. Seems Muschamp has us figured out.

yep, he's owned us...how about a first time in a long time win...:D

GO VOLS...BEAT GAMECOCKS

Tennessee - some points
S. Carolina - less points

I think you might see some new players this week, mainly ones doing it the right way even it they're not as talented just for Coach Pruitt to make a point.

@InVOLuntary think you are on to something with the Pruitt reaction and handling. I do think we have an equalizer, however. Fulmer as the AD should pay dividends in this situation and be a guiding influence for Pruitt. At least I hope that's the case.

I agree but unfortunately, we have to play some of those players that Pruitt doesn't see as "doing the right things". I don't pretend to know the percentages but it seems to me more are not doing the right things as opposed to those doing the right things. This tells me there is division in the locker room that only attrition and recruiting can fix. Hopefully more will get with the program.

Also, I think the frustration is starting to show through with coach Pruitt. This is uncharted waters for him and he's struggling with how to handle it. He's started throwing players under the bus, not by name but as a group. Some will be motivated by it, some will check out. I don't think he had an understanding of how screwed up this roster is/was when he took the job.
The sorry players that won't get with the program, threw themselves under the bus. He is just telling the truth about them. If they are that puny I wish they would just leave

I predicted all off-season that this would be a loss.. simply off of where we thought Carolina would be offensively (ie not being in the middle of a QB controversy and Deebo Samuel having better than pedestrian numbers) and how the schedule lines up (coming off a bye, as we're coming off of Bama)

I just perused their stats, and it looks like they've got quite similar stats to us. They run the ball a touch better (about 15 yards a game better) and they throw significantly better, by the numbers. Defensively, they're just two spots higher than we are-- 61st overall to our 63rd.

They've played against relatively slaw opponents though. While we've played WVU, Florida, Auburn, and Alabama... They've played Kentucky, Texas A&M, and Mizzou as their toughest games (we've both lost to UGA).

Here's an interesting not on the stat sheet:

They're 4th in the country in 3rd Down Conversion Allowed at just a shade under 25%. That seems pretty good, but they've only faced 70 third downs on defense through six games. There are teams (and ones with good defenses, too) that are seeing more like 15-17 defensive third downs per game.

Combine that with the Cocks' time of possession stats-- 26:05 per game, good for 126th nationally-- it looks like this is a defense that can be very Jekyll and Hyde. They can get off the field when it hits 3rd down, or they'll have drives where there's no third downs at all. They're pretty well ranked dead in the middle in scoring defense-- 64th at 25.8 points per game.

This game will come down to how the team responds against Bama. Our guys responded when they saw that sliver of emotion from CJP post-Georgia. Will they have a fire lit under their butts after CJP talked about the team post-Bama? The hangover is real, but seeing some of the quotes like what came from Shy ("If you're not playing banged up at this point in the season it's because you're not playing"- paraphrasing) I hope we have enough leadership to dodge the ill effects.

The cards are stacked against us, but I'll go full homer with full faith in the Pruitt machine to pick the Vols in the first of what will be several pick-ems remaining on our 2018 schedule.

We’ve shown we can go on the road and beat a more talented team. USCe is less talented than Auburn, that gives me hope. Win this one and a bowl is almost guaranteed IMO.

UT - 28
USCe- 20

Saw where they will be without two safeties - JT Ibe and Nick Harvey.

Idk how good either are though.

I've looked at the strength of schedule at a couple of different places, and it's all over the place.
  • teamrankings.com has TN at 29 and SC at 7.
  • Sagarin has TN at 2 and SC at 7.
  • footballoutsiders has TN at 11 and SC at 10.
The first two look like they update as the year goes on. That last one may not.

Wow - that just seems really ignorant to me. WV, UF, UGA, Barn and Bama in 5 of 7 games blows USCe's schedule out of the water.

Think its gonna be a ugly, defensive game with a few turnovers on both sides and limited offense.

Showdown between two defensive minded coaches.

Special teams play will be a big factor.

This is my feeling as well. Whoever gets to 20 points wins.

I think so too. Neither offense is powerful.
Hot take: Alontae causes his first turnover.
