We end up eating out a lot, and I usually tip around 20% for adequate service. If they are very inattentive, I will do less than that. And, if they are out of line in any way I will leave no tip (I could count on one hand the number of times this has happened...and I'm in my late 30's).

For example, at a Cracker Barrel a few months ago, we never got refills. This is not something I appreciate, but I could have gotten over it and given the waitress some sort of tip. Then, the food was awful. Again, I realize this isn't the waitresses fault so I could have still justified some sort of tip.

However, when they were finished bringing out the food, they failed to deliver an order of bacon for my son. When I told the waitress that we were missing the order of bacon, she replied that we didn't order any bacon. Me, my wife and even my 9 year-old daughter were all like, "yes, we did order him bacon" (he's a picky toddler...and that's the only thing we ordered for him). She rolls her eyes and says, "I'm not going to stand here and argue with you about it."

No tip for her.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure at that point management would have been hearing from me because I wouldn't pay for the meal either.

You're welcome.

I tried. It didn't work. They wouldn't comp or discount the meal.

It doesn't seem logical, but over the past 10 years or so, I've noticed in restaurants that we visit frequently (i.e. recognize the manager), the food and service are almost always directly correlated to the manager.

For instance, there was a manager at our local Outback several years ago who was just awesome (I forget his first name...Shawn, I think...but his last name was Detweiler...he ended up being moved to a store in South Carolina). He was hustling around the restaurant, checking with all the guests to be sure everything was OK, etc. Without fail, the tea was perfectly sweet, the appetizers were great, and the steak was cooked perfectly.

When they moved him, the new guy was never out-and-about, never checked on us (unless we complained that the food and/or service was poor), and even his appearance was not good (untucked, wrinkled shirt). The drinks were watered down, the food was usually not right.

Again, I would have assumed that a restaurant could still operate at a high level even if the manager is sub-par but it just doesn't work that way.

Hahaha, that's great.

One of the top British sitcoms, IMO. Was only on for 4 very short seasons, but it was hilarious.

I found it on IFC while flipping channels late one night a few years back, and being an IT guy, I took to it right away.

My brother in law (who is an IT guy also) and I love this show. Watched as many episodes online straight through as we could when we found it. Such a shame it didn't last longer.

That's why I don't go to chain restaurants. At a local, mom-and-pop place, there are some times you go and it is bad, but most are great. But, management never changes and it's not just a job to the management. It is a deeply vested financial risk.

I'm with you 100% on this one. Mom and pop keep the economy running.
