Everybody take note: In order to not be a racist, you not only need to avoid using the wrong geographical descriptor, you better not wear anything that that group may deem exclusive to their culture.

Chinese prom dress draws rage, but Utah teen said she meant no harm

(by the way, I agree that it's ignorant (willful or otherwise) to describe Asians as Orientals)

This is PC rabidly out of control. Those dresses are sold by the dozens in tourist trap markets across SE Asia. So stupid to kick up a fuss as if it’s a ceremonial garment.

This type of backlash makes me roll my eyes so hard it hurts. The ones outraged are always either white people or 3rd generation Asian-Americans who have very little connection to their home country and culture.


Go to Japan, Korea, or China and mention to someone that you’re interested in trying on some traditional clothing of theirs. People will s*** their pants in anticipation to help you try on a kimono (or equivalent clothing) and get a picture with a foreigner wearing one.


Any of my Japanese coworkers or friends who heard about kids wanting to wear a kimono to prom would think something along the lines of “Cool! American teenagers think our traditional clothing is fashionable!” And think little more of it.
