They give it to enhance the reputation of the university and improve programs. I have a hard time believing that Jim Haslam is the sole decision maker of any coach search. There are a handful of these guys, and they all provide input.

This is the truth. So much that the AD hiring process was such a cluster.

Sorry to interrupt, but Derek Barnett had two tackles, one TFL and a fumble recovery.

Carry on

Thanks but I'm boycotting the NFL until Blue Lives Matter. It's a thin blue line and they have crossed it as far as I'm concerned.

NFL = No Fans Left. At least until they show some respect to our county and the men and women who have given their lives for it.

Wow..

Was in Mexico over the weekend for a triathlon race and missed the UGA game. Embarrassing.

Won’t even bother to watch the replay after I saw the score.

Word in Tucson that Dave Heeke (new AD at Arizona) has recently been in contact w/ Butch.

Rich Rod struggling at AZ and pissing a lot of people off here. May not last the season as well.

Heeke was previously the AD at CMU and hired Butch. Very familiar and comfortable with him.

That would be a solid job for him. I'm perfectly fine with Arizona being really average

Tucson, you say? I used to near the The Buffet near 4th Ave...

The undergrads there know how to f@#$ing party, though.

When I was in grad school there, I covered one of my friend's labs and this dude comes stumbling in 10 minutes late with sunglasses on. He was obviously still drunk from the night before, and sits down right in front of me. The two sorority girls next to him instinctively back up because we could all smell the whiskey on him. He leaned back in his chair, and I thought he fell asleep.

Meanwhile, I'm reviewing for terms for their upcoming exam, and I was trying to figure out a way for them to remember that "Olduwan stone tools" were the first stone tools, and then "Achuelean" tools came next.

Out of nowhere this dude, sounding like really drunk and high Keanu Reeves blurts out, "What about 'Olduwan is older,' and Achuelean comes after."

I was like "Motherf@#$er, you are awake?! And you're right!?"

I tell that story every semester to help my students remember for their exam. This semester I tell the story, and I go home and start watching American Vandal on Netflix.

No joke. The drunk guy from my class at Arizona was the #whodrewthedicks dude.

Positive news: Tennessee is #2 in the country in Passing allowed per game

Bad news: We are #122 in rushing yards allowed per game

I think the first time I considered that Butch may not be very impressive was his first SEC Media days (and every one since then). He never looked comfortable and I always had this lingering thought in my head that he wasn't cut out for this job. He just looked nervous and almost over prepared in a way. That's kind of how he coaches. He is so anal about every meticulous detail going into games that he doesnt really leave himself room to improvise or react to the feel of the game. He's going to do what he planned to do going in and live with the results. I think that's a big mistake for a coach at this level.

His recruiting in 14 and 15 really won me over and I convinced myself we were a team of destiny bound for greatness. We should have been. It's really frustrating to think back on. So many players that should have at least gotten a shot at an SEC championship game, or a meaningful bowl game. Something.

I'm glad he was here to get us out of the talent hole we were in. He gave all he had for us on the recruiting trail. Much more than I expected when we hired him. But I always sensed that he didn't really understand Tennessee football at its core. What being a Vol was. He would talk about our traditions the way somebody who wasn't a Vol fan would talk about them. With an emphasis on Rocky Top and Peyton and that was about it. He never went much deeper than that.

Maybe it's silly to expect more from a coach. But I sort of want somebody here who bleeds orange and understands the people and the culture of the state. Butch could have done that. But I get the sense he never really leaned in and fully appreciated it. He saw himself as the face of the program. His face was on every advertisement everywhere. T-shirts, programs, the scoreboard, posters, everything. He wanted that recognition so desperately. He wanted everybody to like him and respect him but he never put the time in to really earn that from us. I don't know. Maybe he did in some ways. I just always felt like something was missing. We were all waiting for him to find it and he never could. He just kept doubling down on his own wacky ideas for 3rd down songs and slogans that didn't mean anything, and then slapping the power T on them. It just seemed... cheap.

He was a cheap hire and we got cheap results. Should have known.

We gotta spend some money and get our guy. He's out there waiting for the call right now. It may be who we want it may not. But either way he will get an opportunity to do what Butch couldn't do. The hire itself won't matter as much as what the new coach does with this opportunity. Butch could have won here. And he wasn't that great. Think about that.

Give me somebody that believes he can beat Alabama. If I'm Currie that's what I ask him in the interview. Tell me your plan to beat Bama. That's the standard here. That's our measure for success. Sorry but it just is. If that's a challenge you're not up for, we will have to find somebody else.

Get it done Currie.
