SMH.
You do know what you're describing is JRM. A guy who is an undersized LB that was recruited as a safety. This is who the modern NFL weakside linebacker is now. Look no further than Darron Lee of Ohio State. He's projected to go in the 1st round and was recruited as a 3 star safety that converted to OLB. And Ohio State doesn't have a "star" position. They just call it weakside linebacker.
As I stated earlier, teams have fancy names for positions that everyone has. Florida State for example calls their nickel position "STAR". The Seahawks famously called their weakside DE position the "LEO". And so on.
None of these are unique or new positions. They're just fancy names.
I agree with you about JRM. That's why I said I could see him playing Star. I also agree about NFL weakside backers basically having a safety type skillset nowadays.
And yes, teams do use fancy names for many of their positions (especially ones that require a player to have a bit of a hybrid skillset) USCe called their S/OLB hybrid a Spur a few years back with Ellis Johnson. At Auburn, he called it a Star.
But you're wrong about the Star position being a name for WLB in our system. The Star position in Shoop's defense takes the place of a SLB, not a WLB. In the nickel, he leaves the field. The MLB and WLB stay in when we go to a nickel package. JRM will be on the field every down that he can go. I agree that he could play Star, but then again he could probably play every LB position on our defense in a crunch. I'm not really sure how it will play out, but I'd imagine JRM and Kirkland keep playing WLB and MLB respectively.
Yes, the "Star" isn't a new position for us. We used a SLB last year. But Shoop in the past has preferred a slightly different skillset at SLB than Jancek did. This is partly due to the fact that Shoop uses a 4-3 over look more than Jancek, who prefered a 4-3 under look in base 4-3.
I'm surprised you don't already know all of this since you watch so much football...
Edit: FTR, I want to admit that I could be wrong about this. I'm basing most of this off of
this article stating Brandon Bell was PSU's "Star" LB in 2015 along with the defensive highlights I watched shortly after Shoop was hired. Belle is what we would have called the SAM in our system. Against power teams, he was used much like we saw Austin Smith being used in 2015. Against spread teams, he was used out in space much more than we saw SLBs used under Jancek.
