Last I saw the LV's turned a $20-25K profit.

The profit or even close to break even goes away if something is not done now. Hire big and mold the remaining Parade AA's into a quality team and the new HC can then bring in elite players again.

It goes away even faster if you pay a huge buyout in order to fire her a season after reaching the elite 8.

How big is her buyout? She is a woman's basketball coach… It's not like her buyout is $5 million or something. Pay the buyout, and go find a real coach!

I can't remember. Maybe $300k per year left on her deal. So $900k to 1.2 million if that's accurate. I'm not sure that it is.

I don't have an opinion on it either way really. Just stating why I think Hart might keep her.

I don't think he wants to pay Pat Summit and Holly Warlick to not coach and also pay a new coach. That's a lot of cheddar for a sport that maybe breaks even. Besides that, I'm sure Pat would like to see Holly get another year.

So when he says they want him to play some Safety, Nickel, Dime, and rush of the edge at times, are they talking about the Star?

If he could put on 20 lbs, that'd make him about 6'2" 220, right? Sounds like the perfect size for the Star.

LOL.

I don't know why you guys act like this is some new position Shoop created. Its just a silly name for a position everyone has. Similar to how some teams use the name "LEO" to describe an OLB that puts his hand on the ground and rushes from the DE position on 3rd down.

The "star" position is just an outside linebacker that stays on the field on everything but obvious passing downs. All it means is when a team runs 3 WRs on the field on first down, we're keeping our base 4-3 look on the field rather than trying to match up with them and running the nickelback on the field. NFL teams have been doing this for decades.

JRM will be the "star" this year. And going forward it'll be whoever we play at weakside linebacker.

This is no magical new position.

Someone remind me: Exactly why do we pay Pat Summit? She is VFL, but she made millions as our coach. Are there other schools still paying their retired coaches?

If it's not ridiculous I pull the trigger. I understand why they may not, and it may also include some big boosters. I just think that may be more emotional attachment to Holly than 2014 performance driven. Basketball people know how incompetent she's been. Some coaching sources have probably already stopped funnelling recruits her way by the way recruiting is going so far.

The three I mentioned carried the team leadership last season and made the adjustments on the floor. Burdick was even on the national team in the off season. The have nobody on the team that does what she did every game. Harrison is 10+ times better than Russell. They get killed at the PG most games. Cooper is going to be ruined from the experience if it continues. Reynolds is a combo that cannot run this double post O. She has not improved one bit since arriving. They have nobody but Dunbar that can bust a zone outside. But she is used so sparingly the opponents know her purpose and stay outside on her. DeShields is a great talent but nobody on the team knows how to play her style. Totally out of synch. Graves is graduating. The rest have talent, but are like fish out of water. None play tough D including Carter who used to shut down opponents SG's and PG's.

Tough spot.

Except in the past, Shoop's Star has been more of a hybrid safety/olb. JRM might end up being the guy there, but we might also play a different guy there in addition to JRM and Kirkland. If JRM does play star, then he'll have to slide to another position when we go into the nickel because Shoop's star doesn't play in the nickel. It's not just a WLB like you've implied in the past.

If you look at his defenses at Vandy and PSU, he's played guys who seem more like big safeties there as well as guys who are basically just OLBs. We're not really sure who he'll pick here.

Edit: I re-wrote a badly worded sentence.

What exactly do you supposed the LV program would be without Pat Summit? She has earned it. All those banners say she earned it...ALL of it.

We'll never be able to repay her what we actually owe her. Right up there with General Neyland.

Lol....if the elite 8 is the standard now...shows how much she has destroyed this program. Won't even get to the sweet 16 this year....IF they make the tourney.

Holly's contract is $665K per year not including bonuses. Roughly 1/2 is base and 1/2 is TV and endorsements. Her contract runs through March 31, 2019. So if the buyout is the total of $665 for 3 years, that would be close to $2mil. If it's just the base it would be right at $1mil.

Everyone knows Holly's done. Hart knows Holly's done. Heck, Holly probably knows she's done. It's just a matter of how long does he let it go before he does something. Does he let it slip to where it will be harder to bring in a quality coach? Does he let it go until the roster is so bad it will be a 4-5 year rebuild?

As to the money aspect, it wouldn't take much for a break even program to become a million dollar loser. When the majority of fans give up on her, it'll be a no brainer IMO. I think we're close to that now.

From the other perspective, it becomes a $2 million loser the minute he fires her.

If it's $2 million I seriously doubt he fires her. Also, I would guess that Holly still has Pat's support.

Mods, Since we are recruiting him at DB, can we change the thread title to reflect that position, instead of ATH.

It just makes it a bit easier, since so many instate players are being recruited and it's hard to keep up :hi:

Hello Volnation friends.. Sorry to interrupt the discussion, but my Papaw that had a heart attack and spent time in the hospital, passed away this evening in the common area of his nursing home. He had a fainting spell and passed shortly thereafter. He didn't suffer and wasn't in any pain. I went to visit him today in his room and he was almost his old self. As I was leaving, I told him that I loved him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. The last person he saw before his passing other than the nurses was me and that's the way God wanted it. He was like a father to me and did a heck of a job raising me because no telling where I would be right now. He will be reunited with his wife whom he was married to for 50 years when she passed away in 2004.

Thank you, Volnation.. I feel like you are my family and wanted to share this with you.

Love you all and I do mean that. You all are more than just posters on a message board to me. :hi:
