I agree that you can't put all your eggs in one basket. But I think the names that are being thrown out are way below what this program needs. With the money that's being suggested, we should be able to go get an established, power 5 coach. Maybe even an NFL coach. Don't ask me who but it should be a pretty dang good coach. Frost, Taggart, Norvell or whatever hot name up and comer you want to throw out, may be the next urban, or Saban or dabo. But they could also end up being the next Dooley or Butch. This program is not in a position to risk hiring another up and comer. We need an established, seasoned coach.
I just do not like this way of thinking and I dont buy it. Bring me a coach who isnt afraid of Saban.
It isn't Saban that anyone is directly concerned with. It is all those damn recruits he has. Literally no one underachieves more than Saban because he should win every NC with all that talent he has.
Mullen. Not really that close for me. I will say Taggart is intriguing. I need to learn more about him.
That's fine. I simply disagree that someone like Taggart or Frost are on the same tier as Dooley and Butch. Dooley was not an "up and comer". We had no competition for him and he very likely would've been a career .500 coach at LA Tech. Butch had a better track record but he wasn't exactly an "up and comer" either. He accepted that Colorado job, which was a bottom 4 PAC 12 job.
Taggart already has a Top 25 job in the country and Frost will very likely have a Top 5 job in Gainesville. To compare them to our two hires is a stretch at best.
I just don't think it's realistic to demand UT hires a sitting Power 5 head coach with a stellar track record. Those coaches don't leave programs they've put a lot of work in to for a little bit of money. Our closest option here is Mullen - who I love and have vouched for - but even then he doesn't really fit your criteria. He's had steady success and one really good season, but the only reason he's realistic is because he's hit the glass ceiling at Mississippi State and can't get more done than what he's already accomplished.
We expect all those assistants to follow Taggart back across the country? That's hard to fathom but I guess they'd have to move on anyway.
