I agree that you can't put all your eggs in one basket. But I think the names that are being thrown out are way below what this program needs. With the money that's being suggested, we should be able to go get an established, power 5 coach. Maybe even an NFL coach. Don't ask me who but it should be a pretty dang good coach. Frost, Taggart, Norvell or whatever hot name up and comer you want to throw out, may be the next urban, or Saban or dabo. But they could also end up being the next Dooley or Butch. This program is not in a position to risk hiring another up and comer. We need an established, seasoned coach.

That's fine. I simply disagree that someone like Taggart or Frost are on the same tier as Dooley and Butch. Dooley was not an "up and comer". We had no competition for him and he very likely would've been a career .500 coach at LA Tech. Butch had a better track record but he wasn't exactly an "up and comer" either. He accepted that Colorado job, which was a bottom 4 PAC 12 job.

Taggart already has a Top 25 job in the country and Frost will very likely have a Top 5 job in Gainesville. To compare them to our two hires is a stretch at best.

I just don't think it's realistic to demand UT hires a sitting Power 5 head coach with a stellar track record. Those coaches don't leave programs they've put a lot of work in to for a little bit of money. Our closest option here is Mullen - who I love and have vouched for - but even then he doesn't really fit your criteria. He's had steady success and one really good season, but the only reason he's realistic is because he's hit the glass ceiling at Mississippi State and can't get more done than what he's already accomplished.

I just do not like this way of thinking and I don’t buy it. Bring me a coach who isn’t afraid of Saban.

It isn't Saban that anyone is directly concerned with. It is all those damn recruits he has. Literally no one underachieves more than Saban because he should win every NC with all that talent he has.

This is true, but he isn’t unbeatable. We hire a guy like Gruden, we can recruit like Saban and we’ll have an elite head football coach on the sideline as well.

Mullen. Not really that close for me. I will say Taggart is intriguing. I need to learn more about him.

Recruited by Jim Harbaugh to play for his dad at WKU, and immediately started coaching there following his graduation. Worked there until leaving to coach at Stanford under Jim, before going to coach at WKU. Broke a 26-game losing streak in his first season and won 2 games, then 7 in his next two seasons before leaving for USF.

Won 2, 4, 8, and then 10 at USF. The 10 wins was the first double digit win total in school history. It's also interesting that he already has 2 former assistant coaches that fall under his coaching tree as head coaches at Indiana and WKU.

His 45-50 career record looks bad at first glance but it definitely doesn't tell the whole story

He is like a lot of coaches in that he has enough results to leave doubts. Frost is popular because he hasn't had enough time to have bad losses.

Frost has dominated most of his competition in year 2. Taggert's best years from what I've seen is 8-5. We already have that.

I didn't say they were on the same level as Butch or Dooley. I said they could turn into the next Dooley or Butch. Like I said they could be the next Saban or Urban too. Neither have proven that they can do it at a big time program yet.

If you continue to think you have to go get the next bright shining star from lower tier programs you're going to continue to strike out more often than you're going to hit a home run. This program doesn't need another experiment. We need a coach that knows how to build a championship program.

Also, you don't pay them a little bit more money, you pay them a lot more money.

Not that i am buying into Taggart, but he sounds a lot like Jimmy Johnson. Not the greatest coach in the world, but can evaluate talent/recruit...and surrounds himself with really good assistant coaches.

We expect all those assistants to follow Taggart back across the country? That's hard to fathom but I guess they'd have to move on anyway.

Jim Leavitt would probably do it. He is also a former head coach of the University of South Florida. I remember watching his team beat Auburn on the road the year they reached #2 team in the nation. Plus, he's a hard nosed son of a b****. Would love even him on the staff if Taggart was hired.
