Soooooooo, I got flamed for this last time.

If Malone doesn't produce this year, is it safe to say he is a bust? Honest question.

"Safe" as in getting a repeat flaming? Or "safe" as in getting pummeled within an inch of your life? :aggressive:

Ole Miss game. Bama touchdown. Come on man, you don't just stick a freshman on the field and hope for the best. Coaches put players in and call their number when they have perfected a play utilizing that player. He had a year less of preparation compared to the other receivers in rotation. Someone will post the freshman stats of the all time greats here. He's shown flashes, now he'll need to show consistency.

Malone is our burner. He really could be the key to making everything easier on offense. If we break some deep passes it's going to open up the run game big time. We have the talent to torture everybody.

gamble is a burner tbh. I have no idea if hes any good or if he can run routes. He stuck out in those videos. But if youre going completely straight down the field he can absolutely fly. Like i said i dont even know what will happen there but that guy can really run. Hes obviously not as talented as Malone but if you need someone to run a deep, straight route id throw it to him haha

Sure. Is that the case with Duprey (LSU), Noil (A&M)
or Cannon (Baylor)? There's many more examples of highly touted WRs.

Lol @ Bama. The meaningless TD when it was 27-0.

In terms of expectations for freshmen receivers, here are stats which illustrate the dramatic improvement in performance for several of our eventual All-Americans at that position from their freshmen to sophomore seasons (or, in the case of those who played when freshmen were not eligible, from their sophomore to junior years):

Larry Seivers:
Sophomore 1974 25-347 13.9 ave. 2 tds.
Junior 1975 41-840 20.5 ave. 4 tds. All-American honors (1976 also).

Willie Gault:
Sophomore 1980 14-240 17.1 ave. 1 td.
Junior 1981 22-479 21.7 ave. 4 tds.
Senior 1982 50-668 13.4 ave. 4 tds. All-American honors.

Tim McGee:
Sophomore 1983 19-286 15.1 ave. 2 tds.
Junior 1984 54-809 15.0 ave. 6 tds. All-American honors in 1985.

Carl Pickens:
Freshman 1989 7-81 11.6 ave. 2 tds.
Sophomore 1990 53-917 17.3 ave. 6 tds. All-American honors in 1991.

Robert Meachem:
Freshman 2004 25-459 18.4 ave. 4 tds.
Sophomore 2005 29-383 13.2 ave. 2 tds.
Junior 2006 71-1,298 18.3 ave. 11 tds. All-American honors in 2006.

The same pattern holds true for two of Peyton's favorite targets, Joey Kent and Marcus Nash.

Joey Kent:
Freshman 1993 10-209 20.9 ave. 5 tds.
Sophomore 1994 36-470 13.1 ave. 4 tds.
Junior 1995 69-1055 15.3 ave. 9 tds.
Senior 1996 68-1080 15.9 ave. 7 tds.

Marcus Nash:
Freshman 1994 5-77 15.4 ave. 0 tds.
Sophomore 1995 43-512 11.9 ave. 4 tds.
Junior 1996 53-688 13.0 ave. 3 tds.
Senior 1997 76-1170 15.4 ave. 13 tds.

As you can see, Josh's freshman stats of 23 receptions for 231 yds., a 10.0 ypc and 1 touchdown are on par with, or better than, the first-year stats for most of these premier receivers. Keep in mind, too, that Josh was battling a nagging series of injuries throughout much of the season.

they played really well when Dobbs went in. Cant disregard that. Outscored them 20-14 or something like that. They were still playing all their guys when Malone caught the TD.

I personally am going to avoid taking a season where Josh Malone was 4th-5th on the depth chart because of some talented upperclassman wide receivers and extrapolating it across his college career. He's going to have opportunities. He's done nothing thus far to make us think that he won't make good on those opportunities.

I'm getting stationed in FL in the middle of September. Does anyone know of any recruits we are looking at in the Fort Walton/Pensacola area? I wouldn't mind catching a HS game or two this year. The American Football scene is not great here in Turkey.

Youll be near me. Most of the recruits in the area are already committed somewhere, but theres still a few.

Janarius Robinson (DE committed to FSU that were pushing for) plays for Bay High in Panama City. About 1.5-2 hours from Ft Walton.

Romeo Finley (Safety) plays for Niceville.

Michael Carter (2017 RB) plays for Navarre. Pretty sure we lead for him

Haven't posted in a while, but wanted to give my opinion on the stat discussion.

Just from what Ive noticed the last couple of years with some tendencies we've had on offense, granted we do have a new OC, but I wouldn't expect any of our receivers to have one of these major breakout 1200 plus yard years. Not that they aren't capable, but we spread the ball around so much, we rarely key in on one receiver like, say how bama did with Amari Cooper. It wouldn't shock me to see us have 4 or 5 guys with 500-700 yards, with maybe our leading guy knocking on 800 or so. I believe we really try to keep things as balanced as possible in order to keep the defense guessing. If a guy like Malone were to have 500 yards receiving this year, I would consider that a breakout season in our offense.
