Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XIII

Round 5. St Preux is probably gonna need to KO or submit Bader for the win. Bader would win the decision as of now....

Better round 5, but not enough

So it appears to me that a 4th DT in the '15 class is almost essential at this point. I'd be down to take a flyer on Settle now and hope he can shape up in a year or two of college conditioning.

Thoughts:

* I think Marquez North is a little bit beyond where Da'rick was as a sophomore, and that is very good... also without the attitude baggage.

* Jakob Johnson withheld. Hmmm... this adds to the cryptic mystique from the other day (coaches not wanting the media to talk about him too much)

* Good to hear continued positivity with Worley. The success of this season comes down to his performance, and avoiding injuries at thin positions. No more, no less.

* We are going to be hurting up the middle. Our linebackers better be ready to lay the wood, because UGA, USCe, Bama, and FL are going to run up that center day and night if we don't perform there. Young'ns gotta grow up fast.

* I like it when you do that right, Darr.

* This team will be fast and fly around. We will take our lumps this year, but enjoy a preview of things to come when we have the depth in place, and athletes spread from top to bottom.

That picture reminded me of how it absolutely drives me nuts how coach z has our WR's line up on the line of scrimmage. All hunkered down & what not.

They can line up backwards for all I care as long as they perform well. I just don't think it looks good.

I saw some of you say that we will have trouble with the Dline. We need a better pass rush and will be destroyed in defending the run. But dont forget that our leader, Curt Maggitt, was held out of the practice. (Right? or did they let him practice?)

DT rotation:
Williams, O'Brien
Sawyers, Owen Williams

Do we even have another healthy DT after that? Vickers? geez lol
It's really not as bad as it seems as long as Owen is pretty good. 3 older players who all went through spring ball and a young, learning 4* DT. Mixon I don't think is that hurt, and Vickers by all accounts has had a good offseason, and has worked with the second team DEs at least at one point. More of a last effort to fill in at DT as he's way underweight for DT.

Another injury could really do damage to us though. Remember what we worked with at DT last year, I don't think we are much worse there this year if at all. Big Dan was good when going 100, like 15-25% of the time and just eating space the rest of the time. Other Dan was solid but nothing special. Mo didn't play. Saulsberry was hurt. Clark was a space eater. Danny O was solid depth.

Last year our DL overachieved for the talent we put on the field iyam. Corey Miller breaking the single game sack record is an example. UK wasn't the worst OL we faced either. If there's one position coach I trust to put out some overachievers if we lack talent it is Coach Strip

As a former WR, my opinion is that it allows the athlete to be "coiled", ready to use the explosive power from the lower body. Can you jump higher when you squat half way down, or just bend your knees slightly? It's the same concept. The same thing with sprinters coming out of the box.

If you watch a lot of WR's come off of the line, many take a "false step" first, which wastes time coming off of the line. This is because they have not been coached properly to not take that false step, and also because their body is not in a position to explode off of the line.

2 things:

What in the world happened with Coleman Thomas? In the spring I thought it was pretty much agreed that he was running away with the RT spot.

I too am worried about DT depth. What happened with D Mixon? Guess I somehow missed him getting hurt. Any word on when he will return?

In regards to C. Thomas. Its possible that Robertson showed out enough at RG to move Kerbyson to RT? And they might have more faith in Kerbyson at RT than Thomas because hes a freshman. So basically it could be that

Robertson(RG) + Kerbyson (RT) > Kerbyson(RG) + Thomas(RT)

This. I think it's a lot easier to start at G as a freshman rather than T anyways.

My take was similar. Less to do with Thomas and more to do with J. Rob being a total stud and the staff needing to move guys around to figure out how to get him in the lineup.

That puts him in an entirely different category mid-season IMO. I think North could be the consensus best WR we've had in a decade by the end of the season. I expect big things from him & Worley together.

I'm surprised they did this - and excited. I have a feeling he is going to float between DL & a traditional linebacker spot when he's out there, never knowing whether he's coming in or staying back every play.

I have an itching feeling we're going to see a lot of unorthodox defensive packages this year on a semi-regular basis. We don't have a legitimate way to stop the SEC run, so Butch & Co. are going to have to get a little creative with what talent we do have.

NB4 CP proclamations and staged protests by VFL Police officials....I'd maintain the position that North is already a better RECEIVER...just nowhere near the force of nature PLAYMAKER. :salute:

Absolutely agree. CP was electric in open space.

CP had 9 TDs in his one season.

The modern record for TD receptions in a season is 13 - Marcus Nash in 1997.

I can honestly see North beating these before he's done. Rare combination of talent and character.

Can we get this written into the VN by laws? I think if it was written down somewhere official folks might stop trying to compare players to CP. I'll go get my powdered wig on if we need to have an official vote or something.

I saw a recruit from Creekside in attendance looked a d lineman and a tall lanky kid from McCallie. Anyone know who they could be
