After hearing reports from this spring, and knowing how much Dobbs and Worley have put in this off-season, I think VolNation is going to be pleasantly surprised by the production from the QB position this year. Dobbs hitting the goalpost from the 50-saban-line on the first try speaks volumes to me.

They've both improved so much and put in so much work I wish they could both play at the same time. We're in better shape than most think with our QBs. I feel good about both right now.

Great interview on Midday 180 for Coach Za. Pretty obvious when you listen to him why he's doing so well on the recruiting trail.

I know this might seem trivial in the grand scheme of things but one of the things he (jokingly) mentioned was someone commenting on him wearing the mid-rise black socks and saying Coach Za looked like his 7th grader. "Ha Ha, it's all about the sock swagger nowadays..."

Paraphrasing, Za mentioned its all about attention to detail. If they (recruits) notice it, it helps him build that rapport that much faster.

Maybe the little things like that don't make a lot of difference, who knows, but it doesn't hurt either. I'm just glad that this staff pays so much attention to minor things like that, so that the major things become a little easier...

Will Muschamp is trying to filibuster the 2014 college football season.

@ SEC media days, and apparently hasn't taken a breath... lol... that's funny.

Anyone think CBJ allows it to play out? Or does he just tell TG no thanks?

Keep in mind that Urban and the U have done this before. A player leans toward a school not theirs and all of sudden they claim something happened on a visit (to their school) but "hey kid we can make it go away if you change your mind."

It's the dirtiest way you can do a kid because that kid has no idea if you're telling the truth or not and the words NCAA scare them. Another tactic is just whisper the words NCAA or 'red flags' hoping it will be enough for the school he's leaning to step back and guess what? Come signing day or later in the process, "we just have a spot open!"

IOW, those schools should raise as much suspicion about what they're whispering and how it serves them as anything else. Them backing off? They haven't been in the game for weeks (some longer).

The media is absolutely ripping Muschamp on Twitter right now. He actually just made some good points about underclassmen declaring for the draft, but I think he's already done at Florida in the minds of most of the media.

Position preview: Wide receivers
John Brice
Assistant Editor

Volquest's position previews are a breakdown of the 2014 Tennessee football team position-by-position in order to get you read for the start of pre-season camp #2 of the Butch Jones era.

PRE-SEASON PREVIEW: WIDE RECEIVERS

WHO'S MISSING?

Basically, no one. Rajion Neal caught the third-most passes on the team coming out of the backfield, but otherwise the Vols' wide receiver corps returns intact --- and with great potential from a banner recruiting haul added into the mix.

BATTLE LINES

Talk about it in The General's Quarters
It's possible the best battle simply will be to distribute enough tosses to all the Vols' talented playmakers. With Marquez North a year older and more comfortable at the wideout position on the college level, to mention nothing of another year of impressive physical work for the pass-catcher with the prototypical NFL frame, Jason Croom and Josh Smith more consistent, and Von Pearson and Josh Malone making instant impacts in spring camp, the Vols genuinely can boast a return to their preferred 'Wide Receiver U.' status this fall --- especially under the demanding tutelage of WR coach/recruiting coordinator Zach Azzanni. And we've not even mentioned Alton 'Pig' Howard yet, who led the team with 44 catches and was second behind North with 388 yards a year ago. Howard missed spring camp but has rededicated himself to the UT program after nearly being gone permanently in May. Plus, there's four-star slot guy/return specialist Vic Wharton. The Vols also can use Devrin Young, Johnathon Johnson, Jacob Carter and Cody Blanc for depth. And after a promising start last fall before sitting out the season with a nagging hamstring injury, where does Ryan Jenkins fit into the equation?

NOTABLE NUMBERS

160/191: Tennessee's offense returns 160 of the 191 receptions its players tallied a year ago.
1,839/1,979: That same collection of returning pass-catchers combined to gain 1,839 yards --- including a combined 884 from Howard and North --- of the Vols' 1,979 passing yards a year ago.

3,005: Yards accrued receiving last season combined by Malone and Pearson in their final years of high school and junior college, respectively. The Malone-Pearson-Wharton triumvirate tallied a combined scoring haul of more than 65 touchdowns a year ago.

BIG QUESTION: ARE THERE ENOUGH PASSES TO GO AROUND?

In basically a year, Tennessee has gone from wondering --- justifiably so --- who might possibly make plays on a consistent basis for it in the passing game to giving offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian a mad scientist-type glee for its aerial potential. North looks every bit a three-and-done player, and the Vols just two years ago saw a junior college player parlay one big season into a first-round NFL Draft selection (Cordarrelle Patterson). No, Pearson is not at that level yet --- but he showcased throughout spring a physical ability to impact the game immediately, not to mention a very mature approach that had his coaches raving about his positive impact in the locker room. Malone is as polished a freshman route-runner as the Vols have seen in many years; indeed, his mental approach is far beyond his years according to people within the program. Howard is very steady, Croom's a matchup nightmare and Smith showcased better hands and nice speed throughout spring. If Vol quarterbacks are protected adequately, they should enjoy cycling through their progressions and finding open receivers from this group.

RECRUITING TRAIL:

Superbly talented Georgia product Preston Williams has long been committed to the Vols, who also are seen as the leaders for in-state standout Van Jefferson. Brian Cole also has been on campus and spoken highly of the Vols, though the Michigan native has several schools in the mix.

DEPTH CHART:

First team: Marquez North, Von Pearson, Josh Malone
Second unit: Jason Croom, Alton 'Pig Howard' or Josh Smith or Johnathon Johnson, Jacob Carter or Cody Blanc.

Position preview: The defensive line
Brent Hubbs

Volquest's position previews are a breakdown of the 2014 Tennessee football team position-by-position in order to get you ready for the start of pre-season camp #2 of the Butch Jones era. After a closer look at the offense last week, today we start our pre-season previews on the defensive side of the ball with a look at the defensive line.

PRE-SEASON PREVIEW: DEFENSIVE LINE

WHO'S MISSING?

Gone from a year ago are Daniel Hood, Daniel McCullers, Corey Miller, Jacques Smith, and Marlon Walls. In 2013, those five combined for 137 tackles, and 12 sacks.

BATTLE LINES

Talk about it in The General's Quarters
The biggest battle at the defensive line position is how quickly can defensive line coach Steve Stripling get some of the seven newcomers on the defensive line ready to play. With only eight defensive linemen returning from a year ago, including Kendal Vickers who redshirted and Trevarris Saulsberry who missed most of the fall and spring due to injuries and surgeries, it's definitely going to be about youth and learning on the job with the defensive front.
Defensive coordinator John Jancek believes his unit will be more active and they are more athletic, which is something he has wanted from the moment he arrived and saw his defensive unit.

"We're going to be way more athletic than we were last year. With Jordan Williams moving inside, and having Owen Williams in there, we're going to be more athletic than we have been," Jancek said. "Jordan Williams is going to be a guy, we moved him inside and he was an end, so he's going through some natural grown pains but you can see, again, he's more athletic what we had in the previous season. And then Dimarya Mixon who came in at the midyear, he's still a puppy, but from a skill standpoint, as far as moving and changing direction, he improves us."

Another reason for the improved athleticism is the move of true freshman Jakob Johnson, now 265 pounds from linebacker to defensive end as well as redshirt junior Curt Maggitt to the defensive end position. With a young secondary overall, it's important that the Vols find a pass rush without having to blitz continuously.

And then on the interior it's whether or not they can hold up against the run. Everyone knows that you must be able to stop the off-tackle play in the SEC.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

81/12: Total number of tackles and sacks respectively for the careers of Allan Carson, LaTroy Lewis, Jaylen Miller, Danny O'Brien, Trevarris Saulsberry, Corey Vereen, and Jordan Williams, who has 39 career tackles and 4.5 sacks.
612: The numbers of days it's been since Curt Maggitt played in a college football game. The heart and soul of the Vols returns this fall to play a new position at defensive end. His impact will carry great weight on the development for the Vols.

5: The current streak of seasons in which the opponents have averaged over 4 yards a carry. Last season, the defense gave up 2488 yards on the ground. The Vols must defend the run better in 2014.

BIG QUESTION: HOW MUCH WILL THE DEFENSIVE FRONT IMPROVE IN 2014?

Of the Vols 17 scholarship defensive linemen, 12 are first and second year players at their position when you throw in Maggitt and Jakob Johnson's move from linebacker to defensive end. There's not a person in the program who doesn't believe that the 2014 defensive front is more talented than a year ago. But there's also not anyone in the program who doesn't think some serious growing pains are coming early in the season.
So the obvious question is how much improvement does the defensive line make during the season. Their growth will largely dictate the season record and how effective the defensive unit will become in John Jancek's second season as defensive coordinator.

RECRUITING TRAIL:

You simply can't have too many defensive linemen. The Vols have put together some good pieces on the defensive front highlighted by defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie's commitment last week.
Joining McKenzie is defensive ends Andrew Butcher and Dylan Jackson along with defensive tackle Quay Picou.

Tennessee is also a serious player for Shy Tuttle. They also are a factor with defensive ends D'Andre Walker and Kyle Phillips . Also five star end Josh Sweat was on campus and defensive tackle D.J. Jones is someone the Vols lead for. Jones is at East Mississippi Community College and the Vols have been recruiting Jones heavily since he was a high school player in South Carolina.

DEPTH CHART:

LE: Corey Vereen, Jakob Johnson, Jaylen Miller, Joe Henderson
RE: Curt Maggitt, Dimarya Mixon, Kendall Vickers
DT: Danny O'Brien, Trevarris Saulsberry or Dewayne Hendrix DT: Owen Williams, Jordan Williams or Derek Barrnett or Michael Sawyers.

Now if we can get great QB play. I'm counting on Worley and from all reports he's made strides this summer in his play.

SIAP. Saw on twitter where Matt Elam was listed at 375 lbs on UK's roster... He was a weird recruit last year as far as difference in ranking between sites... That's huge. I don't see anyway he could've fit into our scheme. No 18 year old kid should weigh almost 400 lbs.

Sure it wasnt an old roster listing Jared Lorenzen?

Haslam will not be prosecuted. Pilot to pay $92 million in fines according to ESPN.

Proportional. Announced the same day as Citigroup gets slammed for $7 B. Of course they made $3.9 B profit for the quarter.

Go Fight Win,

Since you see the players on a regular basis...what were the reactions to McKenzie committing? I didn't see much on twitter from '14 recruits about McKenzie.

Derek Mason doesn't sound half bad on the podium, surprisingly. Certainly gives off a less sleazy vibe than ol' Snake Oil up at Happy Valley.

I like Mason. Would much rather he do well than JF, as long as we resume our annual beat down of Vandy.

Could you post some? I'm not able to twat anything at the moment.
