Volquest's position previews are a breakdown of the 2014 Tennessee football team position-by-position in order to get you ready for the start of pre-season camp #2 of the Butch Jones era. After a closer look at the offense last week, today we start our pre-season previews on the defensive side of the ball with a look at the defensive line.
PRE-SEASON PREVIEW: DEFENSIVE LINE
WHO'S MISSING?
Gone from a year ago are Daniel Hood, Daniel McCullers, Corey Miller, Jacques Smith, and Marlon Walls. In 2013, those five combined for 137 tackles, and 12 sacks.
BATTLE LINES
Talk about it in The General's Quarters
The biggest battle at the defensive line position is how quickly can defensive line coach Steve Stripling get some of the seven newcomers on the defensive line ready to play. With only eight defensive linemen returning from a year ago, including Kendal Vickers who redshirted and Trevarris Saulsberry who missed most of the fall and spring due to injuries and surgeries, it's definitely going to be about youth and learning on the job with the defensive front.
Defensive coordinator John Jancek believes his unit will be more active and they are more athletic, which is something he has wanted from the moment he arrived and saw his defensive unit.
"We're going to be way more athletic than we were last year. With Jordan Williams moving inside, and having Owen Williams in there, we're going to be more athletic than we have been," Jancek said. "Jordan Williams is going to be a guy, we moved him inside and he was an end, so he's going through some natural grown pains but you can see, again, he's more athletic what we had in the previous season. And then Dimarya Mixon who came in at the midyear, he's still a puppy, but from a skill standpoint, as far as moving and changing direction, he improves us."
Another reason for the improved athleticism is the move of true freshman Jakob Johnson, now 265 pounds from linebacker to defensive end as well as redshirt junior Curt Maggitt to the defensive end position. With a young secondary overall, it's important that the Vols find a pass rush without having to blitz continuously.
And then on the interior it's whether or not they can hold up against the run. Everyone knows that you must be able to stop the off-tackle play in the SEC.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
81/12: Total number of tackles and sacks respectively for the careers of Allan Carson, LaTroy Lewis, Jaylen Miller, Danny O'Brien, Trevarris Saulsberry, Corey Vereen, and Jordan Williams, who has 39 career tackles and 4.5 sacks.
612: The numbers of days it's been since Curt Maggitt played in a college football game. The heart and soul of the Vols returns this fall to play a new position at defensive end. His impact will carry great weight on the development for the Vols.
5: The current streak of seasons in which the opponents have averaged over 4 yards a carry. Last season, the defense gave up 2488 yards on the ground. The Vols must defend the run better in 2014.
BIG QUESTION: HOW MUCH WILL THE DEFENSIVE FRONT IMPROVE IN 2014?
Of the Vols 17 scholarship defensive linemen, 12 are first and second year players at their position when you throw in Maggitt and Jakob Johnson's move from linebacker to defensive end. There's not a person in the program who doesn't believe that the 2014 defensive front is more talented than a year ago. But there's also not anyone in the program who doesn't think some serious growing pains are coming early in the season.
So the obvious question is how much improvement does the defensive line make during the season. Their growth will largely dictate the season record and how effective the defensive unit will become in John Jancek's second season as defensive coordinator.
RECRUITING TRAIL:
You simply can't have too many defensive linemen. The Vols have put together some good pieces on the defensive front highlighted by defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie's commitment last week.
Joining McKenzie is defensive ends Andrew Butcher and Dylan Jackson along with defensive tackle Quay Picou.
Tennessee is also a serious player for Shy Tuttle. They also are a factor with defensive ends D'Andre Walker and Kyle Phillips . Also five star end Josh Sweat was on campus and defensive tackle D.J. Jones is someone the Vols lead for. Jones is at East Mississippi Community College and the Vols have been recruiting Jones heavily since he was a high school player in South Carolina.
