The SEC is to the NCAA as the NCAA is to the NFL. What you did before you got to the big league matters more on your resume than it does on the field. However, if you have spent time in the Bigs, then what you did during that time holds more weight than what you did in the other conferences.
You think Crash Davis would have bragged about being the minor league's all-time leading HR hitter had he ever made it back to the show? (Bull Durham reference, FWIW)
It's not that the other stuff doesn't matter, it does, but what matters more is what you do when you get here...and Jancek's record thus far leaves reason to question his abilities as a legitimate SEC DC.
Simple as that...
I think Jancek is going to do just fine at UT once he has better groceries to cook with. That starts this fall.
Better offense = more first downs
More first downs = more time the offense is on the field
More time the offense is on the field = less time the defense is on the field
Less time the defense is on the field = Less fatigue
Less fatigue = better plays
Better plays = better defense
Better defense = better team
Better team = More wins.

Banking on this year to be better offensively is really being optimistic.
New OL, New RBs, Sub par QB play to this point, one proven WR until Pig returns, new TEs.
Sorry but I find it hard to be optimistic with that recipe.

Really?
Yeah we have a new OL, but our previous OL wasnt the greatest with run blocking. OL = who knows
Lane isnt a new RB, plus we add 3 great freshmen. Pickett is eligible. Hill and Summerhill return. Young moves to hybrid role. RB = push or improvement
The QBs will only get better. More time in the system, more S&C, better knowledge of the playbook. Its not like they will be worse. QB = improved
Croom and North return. Pig will probably make it back. Young is in hybrid (he was injured most of last year). Then we get Pearson and Malone... which means less Smith. WRs improve
Cant really argue with the TE situation except, they were basically non existent last year. TE = push or improvement
Jancek was co-dc for ONE season at UGA. He's been a coach for almost 25 years but we'll judge him on his co-dc at UGA in '09? But discount his 2 conference championships at Cincy as DC? How about the D2 national title he won at Grand Valley State in '02? Maybe it's Richt's fault that UGA was awful that season. Do we count Martinez's SEC East Championship at UGA in '05 when he was DC and Jancek was LB coach? Or give Martinez credit for coaching the DB's at UGA in '02 when they were East champs?
I'm not saying these guys deserve statues on campus already I'm just saying maybe we should cut them some slack considering the talent they had to work with last fall. They weren't exactly dealing with a loaded SEC roster.
I personally am not going toslam anyone with this mindset. I just don't see it in the same light.
Marlin Lane is a capable back. We actually have other backs that saw playing time last year and did well. I know it was mop up duty, but most of the D's they faced were still starters, albeit tired starters.
If the OL can play @ 75% of last year OL in pass protection, they'll still be on par with the rest of the SEC. Run protection improvement is a must though.
I'm not concerned at all with WR play. I believe it will be better.
QB play should be improved with consistency in playing time.
TE's cannot be any worse, so any improvement has got to make calling offensive plays easier.
On the OC/DC debate:
I saw an OC that did not quite get it on game plans and play calling. It appeared he was turning the corner against UGA and then he began to regress again. He could sure call a bubble screen or fly sweep though. He never did figure out that the 8-10 yard slant pass is a QB's best friend. And that play is Football 101 for football coaches. It gets your QB in rhythm and WRs focused. If it is good for the QB, it is good for the OC. You have to go with that play until the D adjusts - which then creates openings for different, deeper patterns. Have no problem at all with the system, play designs, blocking schemes, etc.
I thought Jancek would be the weak link in this staff when they were announced. I was wrong. I thought he did an admirable job working with very little talent that had to be shifted back to a 4-3. There were plenty of coaching goof ups for sure, but his unit finished playing better. They just were on the field too many snaps because of how bad the O was. I have always been a Strib and Martinez fan. Was very happy to get those two. Now I am a big Thig fan to add to it.
LOL @ Vandy. Mason is going to take that program further down than they have been in several years
I watched some highlights of Cinci under CBJ and CMB and they used those 7-10 yards slants all the time. I don't understand why we did not use them this year. They must have had some reasoning behind it, because in the few games I saw of Cinci the slant was a major part of the offense.
Our roster last year was tops for the Sunbelt Conference though.
Not ready to crown our coaches the next coming......but people really need to get it through their thick skulls that they did NOT have the talent to run the schemes they wanted to last year. I'm guessing that even some of what we call questionable play calls last year were as much from not having the personnel as anything.
