Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Depends on who you are facing, an all out blitz vs Tom Brady or Joe Montana is suicide. Sometimes it is better to drop back in coverage and take your chances.
This. There isn’t a “right” call. There are tradeoffs.

On the 4th down TD, Banks had man outside and four zone defenders in the middle. Stockton was (likely) reading right side first: does he get man coverage on the slot without a safety over the top? If yes, he throws to the endzone sideline. If he gets zone or outside safety help, the over route should come open in a window. If both of those are covered, there is a slant/skinny post on the backside designed to attack the middle of the field—which should be open if there is outside safety help on the first read. Seven blockers stay in to help against the rush.

Tennessee’s interior zone ended up being a bad defense against this route combo, but that doesn’t mean it was a bad call. UGA frequently uses crossers and double slants to convert mid-range downs, and this defense was perfect for countering that plan, plus it leaves lots of guys free to watch for RBs and TEs leaking out. The defenders from the LOS dropping into coverage would be directly in the throwing lanes and the routes would be running into the most crowded parts of the field. Banks just wasn’t expecting Bobo to go deep with the slot WR getting vertical on fourth down.

Cherokee is ok, itself. Waynesville has a couple great eateries, and breweries. Nice, quaint downtown. Same for Sylva.

Cullowhee may be the most beautiful view in US.

Trout stream right throigh middle of Waynesville.

If you have time and want good food, Waynesville Inn and Golf Club. Make sure and head to dispensary first😆

Co workers all wanted to gamble, and drink. I dont partake of that. Chucked dueces, and did the aforementioned.

What a beautiful place.

Well part of the trip is "the drive" I know it won't be fully fall colors, but it'll be starting.

Currently was planning to hit Haywood Smokehouse...and then depending on how we're feeling either head over to Biltmore (wife's never been) or maybe the Cherokee Casino. But just to get to Cherokee it's around 3 hours.

Casino has plenty to do. Great brewery inside (Wicked Weed) with its own smokehouse

Bottom line, that was a perfect throw against good defense. Players make plays sometimes.

Yup. Though a QB or OC will probably be looking for opportunities to exploit man coverage until yall are back to full strength at CB. I think there are opportunities for Banks to show man and pull a late switch and really catch a QB out…

This game never should have come down to a FG. We had them on the ropes with the FF and were only up 8. Next drive: 3 straight run plays. That’s when we lost the game. We played not to lose way too early, and it killed all momentum we had. But shoulda, coulda, woulda. Time to move on, learn, and grow from it.
If you think we didn't play it right, you don't know ball. It was by the book 100% correct.

Some good video to look at after the UGA turnover and how the UGA D-line made plays against the UT O-line at a critical time in the game.

Good breakdown. Penalty killed them. Big whiff on the first down block. Thought it was a bad read by bishop on the second down run, if he would’ve stick with the outside run as it was designed that could’ve been a big play.

I saw an asinine poll in the FF asking if the quarterback success under Heupel has been because of him or because of the talent of the quarterbacks. And almost half of the people really think that Heupel is just getting lucky with his QBs. I get that these guys have all been really talented, but it takes a great coach to squeeze every ounce of potential out of his QBs the way Heupel has. Just a reminder that....

Heupel's QBs have been:
-A benched Virginia tech QB
-A guy who throws the ball 70 yards when you need 10
-An overrated 7 on 7 QB who can't process a second read when he's not wearing pajamas
-An App State QB with a turnover problem who was 3000 miles away during spring practice.

Josh Heupel has coached those guys to a combined:

66% completion rating
97 Touchdowns
19 interceptions
39-16 record while building a team from the ground up and dealing with harsh recruiting restrictions.
Oh and by the way, this is all during the most talented-rich era of the SEC

It's Heupel's system. It's always been Heupel's system but it's also his coaching. He can scheme guys open all day long, but he also knows what it's like to play championship level football at the quarterback position. I can't think of many, if any other coaches who can really say that. He has been exactly where those guys have been and he knows what to say to them when they have questions. He's a true QB whisperer and people are finally starting to take notice again.

To say that Heupel has "gotten lucky" with his quarterback talent and play on the field is honestly an insult to the dedication that man has put into this job. Keep questioning him. People questioned his OL and WR this offseason. Look at us now.
A post so awesome I need a minute to sit back and savor it.

Guess this means to buckle up for the year with injuries if the medical staff sucks. Can we double check and make sure they are not former Bama or Georgia grads, and are trying to sabotage our season?
I don't think anyone (with real knowledge) suggested they suck, did they? I think they said they were more cautious. Arguably not a bad thing, given that we are starting to get some quality depth. Also not a bad thing to lean on some of the younger guys, snaps are good.

I find myself agreeing with most everything you say. It is the system. I think the proof is in the lack of NFL success of Heupel QBs and it's not about them not getting developed! Their lack of talent gets exposed in an NFL system. Heupel's system makes average QBs look like a million bucks, but Heupel is starting to get his hands on some top-flight QB talent. So it will be intriguing to see if he can do better with better talent.

As long as they are cautious in order to benefit the athlete and not to cover their own rear (Dealt with that before), then it's frustrating but not a bad thing.

It's the way you do it. It's one thing to say "not sure I understand why..." and another to say or suggest that you or your football playing buddies know better. You don't. Until and unless you've coached at his level with his level of success it's all uninformed speculation.
Again… I wish people would read and interpret before positing. I never said once my VFL friends are right and Heupel was wrong. I’m posting opinions. I would have gone for the TD and he wanted to run for a field goal. We will never know. He could have thrown one up for a pick and we lose. Like your post says that coaches know more than any player ever and they are uninformed speculation.

I think that’s completely false but we all have our opinion. Many NFL players have never coached and would likely not be good coaches as that is all how you relate and teach. That doesn’t mean they don’t understand football or couldn’t have been great coaches. Some were happy to get paid and retire young.

You can't say David Sanders is the biggest disappointment. However, if you want to say the medical staff then sure. I think for me it's still either the linebackers or the medical staff.
He clarified and wasn’t trying to say that about sanders.

I am with you about linebackers. Medical staff, we do not know enough about yet to determine. But if they are too cautious they need to wake up. We have a title to win.
