I don't know if there's a more appropriate place to post this, if so move it there, but I thoroughly enjoyed this Sturgill Simpson performance and I'm sure others here would too. You don't see Sturgill playing his Les Paul very often. He's usually got a Telecaster.
I have a nephew on his team. The thought has been he is better than his brother.
He has offers from Ala... Ole Miss... NC... UCLA and others... but not Tennessee to my knowledge.
I'm right along with you, I trust Heupel completely...he's done everything and more to deserve it. That's why, although I totally disagree with some of the moves he made Saturday, and feel like those moves cost us, I still fully supported them, right or wrong, because I support him. I ride or die with the man. I've said on many occasions, he has more knowledge about football in a fingernail, than I do in my entire body...and, that goes for everyone else around here, too; not just about offense, but every aspect of the game.I said neither. Certainly Heupel makes mistakes, but there are very few people whose opinion I would value more than his.
Sir, get this reasonable take out of the overreaction thread. TIA.I'm right along with you, I trust Heupel completely...he's done everything and more to deserve it. Still, I do question why he played for a FG after the strip-sack. I question why we didnt go for the end zone at the end, instead of playing for another FG (2 minutes left, 3 timeouts, and still had a ton of momentum on the offensive side of the ball...UGA still hasn't stopped us whenever we went aggressive downfield, they had no answer for it). I also question why he continued going with DeSean Bishop over Star Thomas. However, although I have these questions, I still support JH and the decisions he made. As I said, he's earned it, and knows better than I. I truly believe he's the best HC the Vols have had since Robert Neyland, and I have said as much on many occasions.
I guess it depends on what Merklinger does. If he enters the portal we will have to bring someone else in, even if just for depth purposes. I think we’d all like to see him stay here and be successful but my gut tells me he transfers.Thinking ahead to the portal after the season, do we roll with who we have, or do we go get a QB. How much offense do we really pursue in the portal? Biggest needs will probably be on defense. Definitely need some experienced DL guys for our rotation, IMO.
He is the best offensive coach in the gameI saw an asinine poll in the FF asking if the quarterback success under Heupel has been because of him or because of the talent of the quarterbacks. And almost half of the people really think that Heupel is just getting lucky with his QBs. I get that these guys have all been really talented, but it takes a great coach to squeeze every ounce of potential out of his QBs the way Heupel has. Just a reminder that....
Heupel's QBs have been:
-A benched Virginia tech QB
-A guy who throws the ball 70 yards when you need 10
-An overrated 7 on 7 QB who can't process a second read when he's not wearing pajamas
-An App State QB with a turnover problem who was 3000 miles away during spring practice.
Josh Heupel has coached those guys to a combined:
66% completion rating
97 Touchdowns
19 interceptions
39-16 record while building a team from the ground up and dealing with harsh recruiting restrictions.
Oh and by the way, this is all during the most talented-rich era of the SEC
It's Heupel's system. It's always been Heupel's system but it's also his coaching. He can scheme guys open all day long, but he also knows what it's like to play championship level football at the quarterback position. I can't think of many, if any other coaches who can really say that. He has been exactly where those guys have been and he knows what to say to them when they have questions. He's a true QB whisperer and people are finally starting to take notice again.
To say that Heupel has "gotten lucky" with his quarterback talent and play on the field is honestly an insult to the dedication that man has put into this job. Keep questioning him. People questioned his OL and WR this offseason. Look at us now.
