Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Honestly, how did Gilbert miss so badly? Bad hold? Just completely botched the kicking motion due to nerves?
When they showed his face on the sideline before he went out there and again just before the ball was snapped…I knew. Kid was scared to death. Big props for him making the next one though. Hoping that if he’s in that situation again, he will drill it bc he learned from his miss.

15 in coaches poll is laughable. How do you keep ND and SC ranked? Do you seriously think Iowa St is better than us? Of course, Bama jumps over us with their win over the big slow Wisconsin. I know rankings don’t matter…it’s more about the disrespect to our program and team to me.

Yeah, I thought about that too. I think for some kickers, missing a career-defining kick (up to this point) could make you less afraid of the next one, because you've already experienced the worst possible outcome. But it could also make him even more terrified because then you're thinking "what if it happens again?" The fact that he made the one in OT suggests he can rebound psychologically.

My opinion of Heup’s offense has somewhat eroded over the past 2 seasons. Last night really calmed my apprehensions. I don’t know if the team is good enough to return to the playoffs, but it looks like it’s going to be a fun year to watch.
Better talent at the most important position on the offense+players making plays and executing seems to be making "CJH's offense" good again. Hmmmm...crazy how the issue was never actually the system.

It certainly doesnt help the offense the past 2 season that his QBs have been absolute buns. As if by magic, it looks like the old offense when the dude running is is worth a ****.

Handle business next week and go get ready for a very game Mississippi St. team in Starkville. Get out of there with a W and you have a bye. Plenty to still play for.
Yup, everything is still on the table for this team including the playoffs and a title.......everything is still there

I agree with you, but if things don’t fall right for us in a few games 8-4 might still happen.

Yeah 9 games left, we're 2-1 and if a few things go poorly still could lose some heartbreakers we shouldn't.

A few things I like from a schedule layout...

UAB
this Saturday after the crushing loss to Georgia (instead of another good SEC team...we still gotta show up to play BUT talent vs talent UAB isn't rebounding if we go up 21 in the first quarter)
at Miss State
(they're also undefeated, they'll be buzzed and it'll be a true road test before the bigger dogs could argue it'll be a tougher road environment than the Swamp is gonna be this year)
BYE
recover and prepare for Arkansas coming to town on the 11th and get healthy for the 4 game stretch it starts
vs Arkansas
at Bama
at Kentucky
vs OU
BYE
vs New Mexico State
at Florida
vs Vandy

This first 5 games is our longest stretch...we get to the bye week 4-1 and get ourselves healthy for the last 7.

But it looks like the offense is better than last year.

Joey > Nico
Star & Bishop = Dylan (obviously neither is better alone but together they've ran for 425 and 4 TDs on 62 carries)
WRs = big improvement imo...3 of them are at 200 yards already with at least 1 TD. I would like to see some of the younger guys get more work...but our starting 3 have been really good so I get why it's hard to take them off the field.

I don't think Nico can afford to redshirt, he will have then quit on two teams in the same year.

If he transfers out I would expect it to be a second level conference. Or a team with a qb guru that can put something together for him next season. His window is closing, no way he can go into the draft after this year.

He really sabotaged himself.

Nico has already burned a RS...he'd need a Medical to do it again.

I have never actually taken shots at people on here before, but this is really boiling my blood. What a bunch of defeatist losers. I actually hate the legion of miserables. Who would have thought.

My takeaway from yesterday is positive. This is a playoff caliber team and Heupel is closing the gap. UT had Georgia on the ropes and was a FG away from winning the game. We have not played Georgia this close in Heupel’s entire tenure.

Focus on getting the defense healthy, because once it is, it’ll pair with a really productive offense. The schedule is tough but I firmly believe this team doesn’t finish worse than 9-3 and very possible it finishes 10-2. This is a good team, and it has the potential to be better than last year’s team.

He's too emotional, but he's also not wrong... LSU's RB1 had 93 yards on 15 carries (that's over 6 per carry). They looked like they were playing a damn good Florida defense...one thing Napier has managed to do despite his bad play calling is recruit and have a good defense.

My biggest gripe is not having over the top help for Redmond on that 4th down play. That would have sealed it.

2nd gripe is no holding on one of their scores. That was the most obvious it had been all game.

3rd gripe is the no pick call on the 2pt conversion.

I do wish Heupel threw a fade there at the end when everyone in the stadium knew we were running it to set up the fg.

Do we think Max makes the fg if we didnt get the false start? Maybe. . . probably.

There are a lot of plays we see that could have altered the outcome for us. What's not being talked about is all the plays that did go our way. We were literally 1 more play from winning. UGA made that play instead of us.

We are now able to go toe-to-toe with any team in the country. There are zero guaranteed losses. I
I think if you are playing the percentages you think Georgia is playing for a first down and not going over the top. The reality is the coverage was great and they just made a play. That's a 10-20% chance play and they happened to hit it. Receiver had to push off to create space to make the catch. I also don't think the official ever calls offensive pass inteference in that situation. You followed up that play by not playing defense on the 2 point conversion. I would have called a timeout after they lined up and set up the defense. We had so many chances to close that game out in the last 7-8 minutes it was crazy. Tennessee wins that game 9 out of 10 times but there is that one time where it doesn't go your way. The 22 Bama game all of the breaks went our way down the stretch and this game was the opposite. I just hope the team doesn't let this loss beat them again and we have got to make some adjustments on defense or we will not qualify for the playoffs. I really hope Moi and Hobbs get back soon and make a huge difference. I still think our linebackers and safety are huge weakness if you watch them closely. Maybe Moi and Hobbs can create more havoc and allow the linebackers to make more plays. Time will tell but it's a long season and the opportunity is still in front of the team. Go Vols.
