Merk pulls a Hooker... Poor poor Aguilar

*I do think Aguilar is a little better than Merklinger. I also think if we can get past this season, we'll never have to worry about the quarterback position again.... as long as Heupel is here.

I think it's a reasonable comparison at this point.

The problem with it, and it's a serious problem, is that JG would not have been JG under Heupel.

2019 JG would have been better than Nico on the 2024 Vols. He could hit a deep ball. 2019-2020 Jim Chaney was the worst offensive coordinator we had in the entire decade of misery. The fact he was and maybe still is held in such high esteem irks me.
JG still had horrific overthrows, the sack fumbles, and throwing into triple coverage. If Nico plays against Ga St or BYU...we probably win. JG was a catastrophe everywhere he played. Hopeless.

that seems like a pretty good stat to be walking around with

*I'm not saying Aguilar can't lead the VOLS to another double digit win season. I would love for him too. I'm just being cautious about my enthusiasm for the QB positionthis season. I was all in on Nico winning the Heisman after we went to the ETSU game last season. I was wrong. We got to SEC play and Nico played scared. I'm not crowning Joey Aguilar "the best QB sincre Hendon Hooker" until I see him in SEC play. That's fair on my part. Wasn't Guaranto the Gatorade Player of the Year or an Under Armour All American or something like that? He didn't live up to our expectations. I know the coaches he had were subpar but a lot of it was on himself.

Thoughts on this?

Nonsensical and vague in this context. Is he using it in the manner baseball uses it? Where the "Wins Against Replacement" is compared to a "minimally skilled and readily available replacement player"? In that context, how does Aguilar have a strong negative WAR? Thats saying Aguilar is extremely worse than a minimally skilled and readily available replacement.... i.e. one of the worst QBs in D1.

Is the Replacement Player in reference to the QB from the year prior? If so, that's a metric that's entirely conjecture. You cannot compare the value of two QBs in two different seasons without making false conclusions and assumptions. Aguilar could've theoretically won MORE games for TN last year. If the Vols have a bad season this year you cannot assume Nico would have given us a better one.

Who would you have of the 3 QB's on the roster then? A true freshman, a rs freshman with 3 qtrs of experience, or a senior who is the active leader in offense per game in the entire country?

Not sure why there is so much waffle-stomping over this. Seems pretty obvious what we have to work with and who the best option is. Who knows if he'll be all-american, but given the QB situation here, he is the best hope for a successful season. . . I'm just not gonna jump on the doom & gloom train out of the gate is all.
