Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I think Bishop will start the season as the #1 RB, but I think Peyton Lewis will take over as the #1 RB during the season. He has breakaway speed that Bishop doesn't possess. I think they'll likely be very close in their total number of carries by the end of the season, barring injury.
Bishop is more like a Travis Henry and like I said Lewis is more akin to Jamal. With this o-line, we may have an epic running game. I am more excited for this season than I have been in a while. Defense and run the dagum ball. WGWTFA.

Not KingVFL but had a friend who is on staff tell me this is the best looking team Heupel has had at this point. Big and physical on both sides of the LOS. Back end on defense is legit. Run game will be a thing of beauty and passing game will be better than expected (not 2022 good but better).

He said at all levels this is a better football team than least year's squad.

I am pumped!!!
Heupel understands the assignment of building an elite SEC team. I kinda wonder if the offense sputtering the last two seasons was actually a net positive for him as a coach. He knows now that he can't rely on torching defenses game in and game out. He has to build a complete team, especially at the LOS, to grind out wins.

I don't know why that guy kept saying we could never get back to the offensive success of the 22 season....IMO that is pure bullcrap.

We could even outstrip it over the next few years if George and Faizon can run the offense with their prodigious talents....get a couple of sure handed fast big play WRs, a couple of good to really good TEs and RBs...and we are off to the races.

Of course the OL is going to be the factor in deciding if all those shiny toys can run up yards and TDs. If all we get is solid play from them, then our true potential will not be reached, we will still score at a good clip, but not REALLY score...but...if we ever get great OL play...I think Volunteer records will fall.

Just passed Japan in data released this year actually. No steps back. Cali’s economy is growing faster than the 3 largest world economies - US, China, & Germany.

Also has the largest share of manufacturing and agricultural production in US.
Weren't they over $16Billion in the red with their budget

I was counting "recruited" scholarship WRs. I may be wrong, but I don't think Winton and Weary are on scholarship. But yeah, they would be 8 and 9, if it got that far.

But getting more into that depth conversation...

Truth is, for all those worried about lack of bodies, we've never used more than 4 or 5 in meaningful minutes. Some of the same fans who criticized the staff for not playing many WRs are now gnashing teeth over lack of WR depth.

2021: we pretty much exclusively stuck with Tillman, Jones, and Payton. They tried getting Calloway and Hyatt on the field in spots early in the season, but they weren't reliable, so we went with the 3 man rotation.

2022: Tillman, Hyatt, and McCoy were the 3. Then Tillman got hurt against Ohio and Keyton took his place. Squirrel actually rotated in some later in the year as a freshman, but not really because he was needed, but more because Tennessee was way ahead (Orange Bowl being the exception). Those 5 were the only WRs who got meaningful snaps.

2023: McCoy, Squirrel, and Keyton were the 3. Then McCoy got hurt in late September and Nimrod became the 3rd. No one else really played meaningful snaps that year. Webb got in some, but it wasn't during meaningful moments, so it was pretty much 4 who played meaningful snaps.

2024: Started out the season with McCoy, Squirrel, and Thornton, with Brazzell as the 4th. Nimrod rotated in some. McCoy, Squirrel, and Thornton all dealt with the injury bug throughout the year, and yet, we still didn't play anyone other than those 5 in meaningful minutes, with one exception...Matthews against Vandy. So 2024 was the year we needed to go furthest down the depth chart (due to numerous injuries) and that was to the 6th guy (Matthews who had passed Webb on the depth chart by then).

I think this year's group is much more talented than last year's, just inexperienced. Our big 3 will be Matthews, Staley, and Brazzell. If we have to go to a 4th, it will be Travis Smith, who is the most talented freshman WR we've had under Heupel. If a situation like 2024 materializes, and we have to go to a 5th, it's likely Rad Jackson (possibly Jefferson). And if that situation materializes, it's at the end of the year and the freshmen will be much more comfortable.

The gnashing of teeth over lack of WR depth is overblown. It's simply about the unknown. The unknown scares people, but the truth is, our WRs weren't good last year. Neither was Nico. I'd rather have unknowns with promise than known quantities that are mediocre.
It’s not overblown. Even AP and Hubbs spoke on it. They said the staff wishes now they had taken more bodies too. If we have a couple injuries then things could get very interesting. Which Stayley and Brazzel are not fully healthy already.

So it’s not overblown and we messed up. But it’s something we have to deal with. If we can manage to keep Stay and Braz playing all year, then we are good to go. I think another playoff appearance depends on WR health. If we have injuries, we are an eight win team. If not, we have a great shot at 9-10 wins.

Same thing in ‘98. I expected a better showing against Syracuse. If you said we would win it all after that, I wouldn’t have believed you.

Something to keep in mind if we come out flat. 1st game doesn’t define the season.
I'd totally shocked if we come out flat. I just hope we don't come out too hyped up

With respect to Brame: okay, but Miles Kitselman is supposed to be our starting TE. Right? Davis is #2.

Kitselman and Davis are the reason I'm not as freaked out as most about the lack of experience and depth at WR this year. I think we are going to use our TE's a lot early this season.
