Thoughts on the game:
1) Chris Brazzell looks like a top tier receiver. Dude made plays and beat press man. Wish he had seen a few more targets.
2) Joey continues to impress. Forced one of the picks when he probably should have thrown it away (although he was under duress and underthrew it because he got it) and might have gotten away with one when Brazzell bailed him out with an unbelievable catch. Aside from those two plays, though, the guy was elite on Saturday. Not something we’ve seen from our QB’s against Georgia. Anyone check to see how Big Nic lately?
3) I like the three headed monster at running back. They may need to shift the rotation a bit, but playing all three of those guys makes the most sense to me.
4) Linebackers…yuck. None of the linebackers were good at all. Consistently found themselves missing tackles and out of position. Perhaps my expectations for him were too high, but Arion Carter specifically has been a big disappointment to me so far this season to this point.
5) Tough day for Ty Redmond. He’s going to be a good one, but he got picked on early and often. Tough day for Turrentine too. I know he’s your most veteran safety, but he’s not playing like it. Lots of bad angles being taken by him.
5b) the defensive play calling maybe could have been better, but the majority of the issues that stood out the most were execution centered from what I could tell.
6) Caleb Herring was very good in pass rushing situations. Got home a few times and would have gotten home more if a couple of obvious holds had been called. Lots to build on for him.
7) Final critique from me comes from an offense approach perspective. Why the explosion in the first quarter and a nothing burger in the second? Georgia is a well coached team and definitely made some adjustments, but to me that poor second quarter was more on us than anything they did. Trying to help the defense by going slower in the second quarter didn’t help them hardly at all given that Georgia still put up 500 yards with play calling that was honestly pretty vanilla, and it seemed to cost our offense its rhythm. If the defense continues to struggle, that is something the coaches will need to recognize and begin focusing on outscoring teams.
7b) a positive for the offensive philosophy, though, is the diversity of formations we are using. Went with several tight looks and didn’t rely solely on wide splits. We’re making use of the middle of the field. Seems like we’ve either expanded the offense or the staff trusts Joey immensely more than either of the two precious quarterbacks. Maybe some of both.
8) That was a game costing false start before last kick at the end of regulation imo. No false start, we center the ball, and I think we’re talking about how we ended the streak. I still think there was enough time to center it. Might have added a couple of yards to the kick, but Gilbert would have had enough leg for that.
9) Going to go out on a positive. Well done Volnation. That was an unreal atmosphere from start to finish.
A lot of really good things to takeaway from what was an excellent football game as heartbreaking of a loss as it was. Coaches and players can’t linger on it and have to put all the attention on kicking the crap out of UAB before a road test in Starkville. GBO
