Recruiting Forum Football Talk II

Once money gets flowing, the NCAA will not know who has how much and from which it came. That's why they didn't want student athletes to get paid to begin with. Easier to monitor and that was even hard for them to manage. No way they keep it in check now.
I mean, if the limit is healthy, as likely (let's say 100k+)...you're talking maybe 1-dozen kids a year for each major university. Maybe a few hundred kids in total...IRS audits and BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) take care of that, 10 times over, with ease.

I think a bunch of this either brings things to light or puts a lot more SAs under felony charges.

Recruiting is just going to get dirtier with the ncaa decision. Boosters will start funneling money through “jersey” sales and other bs. It’s just a mess and will make the elite even more elite because they’ll always be able to be ahead in the loopholes and find a way to get recruits more and more money... I’m all for kids being able to promote themselves but I just don’t see how they are going to keep all this fair and not let boosters and crap run wild... just don’t see how it gets regulated enough to keep things level.
It's gonna be um "interesting" to see how it gets played. There are a few legit big programs in some of the wealthiest areas in the country.
Curious to see how many 5 stars could get commercials (example) through the aTm network that's apparently so huge. Can you financially entice transfers, somehow?

Or will they're be some kind of limit? Just not sure what kind they could impose that wouldn't get legally challenged in a free market. I mean if it's their income and doesn't go through the school/NCAA.

I'm guessing the NCAA will force the schools to keep up with how much each player earns from their "endorsements". The schools may even be required to hold the money in escrow until the player graduates. Then all the tax will be due when the player leaves school.

I can see where the schools known for cheating may even try to pay some players "under the table" to allow them to have the money before graduation and avoid some taxes. This would be when an FBI type investigation busts a bunch of schools/coaches for tax fraud.
Lol no entity would be allowed to defer taxes like this.

If the schools are required to keep up with the endorsement money .. I think they would... and they could instruct the players that if they don't report it to the school, it would be an NCAA penalty and a crime for tax evasion.

I would also think the school would like the money to be as high as possible so the coaches could use it as a recruiting pitch. "If you come to our school, our players make X dollars per year in endorsement money."
Money is the bane of sports. I hate it. It ruins everything good about sports. I grew up loving MLB. I read every book about the legends of baseball in my elementary shool library. I watched nearly every game on TBS, and every one I could fit in on WGN and WOR. I went to I don't know how many Braves games when I moved to Georgia....and then money ruined it for me. It ruins everything.

Lol THIS ALREADY HAPPENS...underground...and against NCAA rules. Why is everyone acting all naive all of a sudden??

All monies "for likeness" would be allowed, right?? All the current bagman money would just be more transparent, if anything. Not that there would be anything wrong with it (assuming no FMV caps to transactions).

You are the one that is blinded by naivety if you think this will even the playing field. It will make it worse...I feel like Gen. Buford said in the movie Gettysburg...I can see it plain as day, it has a hard set stony quality to it, like it has already happened and there is not a damn thing I can do about it..😔

For my 300th comment, I'd like to heartily thank @Brillovol for my 1000th like and all of you great Vols for the 999 before it.

What's that saying? The more things change, the more they stay the same. You'll still have those universities out there taking advantage of the system.
Bingo. No material change. I don't get why Ulysees doesn't get this.

A lot of folks will disagree, but I'll say it anyway. I don't think college athletes should be paid anything. Getting a free education at a place like Tennessee or really just about any other legitimate college is invaluable.
I absolutely agree. That education is extremely valuable and the only reason scholarships exist is us...the fans.

Where did I mention "even the playing field"??? Lol. You are seeing ghosts.

Either you understand kids are already being paid or you don't. Don't be naive. All this ALREADY OCCURS.

How does this change ANYTHING? At best, it forces some to have the monies taxed, brings light to some kids that take in max amounts and IRS/FinCen audits.

Literally NOTHING happens right now. Things can't be any less controlled and owned by the deepest pockets.

Family is important.
But if you feel the wind is a little strong and reach for a blue shawl right before you change, we're okay with it.
Edit: I retract that! I couldn't bring myself to do it, either. Yuck. Hating Florida together is family togetherness.
Yeah - no way I could ever do that ---
BTW - Mr Smokin wore a gray shirt with an an Orange Power T on it to the BYU game this year!

So any kid that receives a scholarship should not be allowed to earn side income or start a business? Why are athletes (often football and basketball players are exclusively singled out here which is really effing shady) separated from EVERY OTHER student in their ability to earn income? This seems anti individual freedoms.

Many kids recieve full scholarships and can still earn other income. Yet you disagree SAs should be able to. So, do you believe 1) no scholarship students should be allowed to earn other income, 2) SAs should be able to earn other income like all other scholarship students, or 3) SAs and other scholarship students should be fundamnetally treated differently?

Huh? You lay 20k at a doorstep. Done. ?? Nobody says a word. You do get how bagmen work yes? Do you think these families are reporting it as income or a gift and paying taxes????

You can’t do it legally and you won’t be able to legally under the new rules either

That’s the only point I am making

I don’t think they should be paid in college, but I do believe they should have the opportunity to turn pro at 18 and make a living if they choose.

Opinions on both sides are completely legitimate. "Should be paid" is a complex rabbit hole though because huge amounts of revenue is being generated. That money has to go somewhere. I certainly see why people have a hard time justifying where all this revenue is being funnelled under the current system. In a market economy it's not always as simple as what "should" be happening. The enormous success of college football actually created an issue. If college football was less popular and generated minimal revenue then there would be no movement to compensate college football players. Agreeing they should be paid is not to marginalize the value of their free education.
