Not sure how it couldn't. If I'm Pruitt, I'm making next year's game vs Bama PERSONAL. We will be coming off a bye week too. Maybe we can at least give them a scare at home.

Can't remember where I saw it during the recent discussion about this play .. but apparently TN has a hurry up play where the hurry to the LOS audible is to run the SAME play. This appears to be what the other 10 players did .. as they ran the SAME play that was run on 3rd down. It looks like JG decided at the last moment that we could QB sneak it in.

Was 74 on the field the play before or did he run in from the sidelines?

JG probably read or heard about the Peyton Manning play where he and the tailback were the only players that knew he was going to fake the dive play and run the naked bootleg. In fact, he ran this play vs Bama in the 96 breakout win. So JG thought he could be the hero and run a play like Peyton did vs Bama.

Not sure about 74. He was the last player to get in position before the snap however. Not sure if he just had farther to run than the other players to get lined up.. or maybe he started to line up on the right before someone sent him to the left.

My view on it was they wanted to give the perceptions of a QB sneak so the bama LBs would crash inside which would play into the blocking scheme. Although that would just make Jg even dumber if he didn’t realize that would kill any chance of a Qb sneak working. I have too with that he went rogue though because the entire line blocked for a run play.

Agreed.


My theory is it was hurry up it was supposed to be the sneak and if there was delay it’s the previous play.


It’s certainly possible That it was just supposed to be the previous play either way but usually a rushed quick play is a sneak

I was just giving you the numbers and explaining why the OP probably said what he did.

SMU has benefited from a weak schedule like you mentioned about other teams. ESPN FPI has them similarly ranked.

As much as I dislike Jg at moment he is best chance at a win without BM Saturday. He has had some success at times vs Muschamp just faltered late. He was really good last yr most of that game. I’d expect a heavy dose of the run game regardless. This OL is playing with a mean streak so need to try and take advantage of it.

This isn't at all like Trey Smith. Maurer has had multiple injuries and has been medically cleared quickly the past two weeks. UT announced that Maurer would be a game-time decision last week, but he was full-go in practice. So they knew he could play, just didn't announce it. He's not full-go this week. Generally, UT sits players who don't clear to practice by Wednesday. But if Maurer is cleared as late as Saturday, they'll likely have him ready to play. They'll make the right call-- he won't be cleared at risk to his long-term health.
