Working in shoulder pads and helmets Wednesday, Tennessee held its third practice in preparation for BYU on Saturday.
The media saw two open periods and some brief 11-on-11 as we were leaving the field.
Here are some quick observations from Wednesday…
Once again, Tennessee’s offensive line worked plenty of two-man combo drills, with tackle-guard pairings and various guard-center pairings with Brandon Kennedy. Notably, during the opening 11-on-11 plays to start practice, the OL (L-R) was the same as the starting group vs. Georgia State — Wanya Morris, Ryan Johnson, Kennedy, Riley Locklear and Marcus Tatum. As we were leaving and the team again resumed 11-on-11 work, Trey Smith headed back to work with the S&C staff for the second straight day. Freshman Chris Akporgohene has been a participant in practice some this week. He’s still not fully cleared but did see some indy reps at left guard.
Offensive CEO Jim Chaney spent time with multiple units Wednesday, observing the quarterbacks and tailbacks (who were working on lots of check downs and swing routes) before making his way over to the tight ends and offensive line.
After giving up several pressures and a sack Saturday, there was plenty of pass protection work for the tailbacks later in the period. The tailback rotation today was Ty Chandler, Eric Gray, Tim Jordan and then Carlin Fils-Aime and Aaron Beasley.
For the second straight day, Jerrod Means was at receiver. Jeremy Pruitt will likely update the move after practice. The switch is interesting considering the Vols moved means to cornerback because of depth concerns and nothing has changed on that front — in fact they’ve actually lost a body with Terrell Bailey’s transfer.
Senior linebacker Daniel Bituli (knee) was dressed but only watched drills next to QC Kevin Simon. Again, Pruitt will address the latest there but Bituli doesn’t look like someone who will play Saturday. The rest of the ILB rotation was the same as its been, Will Ignont and Henry To’oto’o paired together, followed by Shanon Reid and Jeremy Banks.
Derrick Ansley spent a whole period with the safeties working on calls and communication. BYU runs a lot of formations with plenty of shifts and motions.
At defensive line, Tracy Rocker was not happy with the fundamentals from several players in his group, calling out specifically Matthew Butler, Ja’Quain Blakely and Kurott Garland. With Darel Middleton, John Mincey and Latrell Bumphus working with Chris Rumph, the DL rotation went Greg Emerson, Aubrey Solomon, Garland, Savion Williams, Butler and Blakely. During 11-on-11 work as we left practice, the front-four was Darrell Taylor, Emerson, Solomon and Bumphus.
The routes on air period consisted of lots of red zone work and two-man route combinations. For the first time that I’ve seen, former Maryland transfer quarterback Kasim Hill took reps during the pass-skeleton drill.
