Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Hi VN fam. I’ve been less active than normal lately. I love VN and while I don’t post a lot, I’m usually active in reading the board and “liking” posts.

We live in the mid-state. My wife and I have a 4 year old boy. We just had a second boy in early January (which I proudly posted about a month ago - and I thank you all for the likes and well wishes associated to that post). Wife and kids are doing great.

However… to get to the heart of this post… I have a lump on my skull (on the bone) that has come about very randomly and fairly abruptly. Since the arrival of our son in January, I’ve had several appointments in rapid succession including X-ray and full head/skull MRI. MRI showed all soft tissue to be in good shape and normal/healthy (no brain tumors - which is obviously great news). However, I have a “Full Body Nuclear Bone Scan” later this week and a meeting with Tennessee Oncology next week. There is a chance this is a benign bone tumor. There is also apparently plausible concern this is a rare metastasized bone cancer (I am hopeful as I feel healthy otherwise - I exercise regularly and have no other noticeable issues with my body).

Asking you all for positive thoughts and prayers over the next week or two as my family gains clarity on this. Not as much for me in the sense that it’s all about me… but more-so from the perspective of how this could impact my sons. Young kids need their parents.

I am a believer and Daniel 3:16-18 comes to mind right now. We are called to have an “Even if…” faith. When we are thrown into the furnace, we know God can deliver us. But “even if…” He is still God. And God is good, even when it’s beyond our understanding.

We remain positive and encouraged. But praying for a benign situation and many more years of VN activity. Asking you all for the same.

Hey there all.

Quick update to this post from a couple of months ago. I have had series of scans and tests completed over the last 60-90 days including a 60ish day follow up CT scan last week and an oncology appointment today.

They still aren’t sure what the lump in the skull of my forehead is, but do not believe it to be malignant. They don’t believe it is growing based on tests completed and the series of scans over time. Coupled with all other testing that has confirmed nothing else going on in my body…

Their conclusion is that it is a benign situation. Possibly a benign cyst in the bone. Or, because I noticed it after a really hard accidental head-butt from my 4 year old (when we were wrestling around), they believe it could be that the bone in that particular area of my head was “weak” and coupled with the impact could be a unique series of events that it is just a response to localized “trauma” (think similar to a bone bruise scenario that caused swelling and then never saw the swelling reduce). It’s not in the brain under the skull and it’s not in the soft tissue outside of the skull - it’s only in the bone in that spot.

Other than aesthetics, Oncology’s recommendation is “non-intervention” in most benign situations - especially this one as it’s my skull and in close proximity to the brain.

So, we will continue to observe and see if it changes over the next 6-12 months.

Thanks for all of the initial prayers and well wishes when I posted my original message. It’s been a really weird scenario that has confused doctors but definitely seems to be a positive path forward.

Today is the 5 year anniversary of my best friend's death from skin cancer. Was 50 years old. Left two teenage daughters behind and a grieving wife. Never would wear sunscreens and we played golf and went to many a UT game together. I have used sunscreens most of my adult life. I used to get on to him about it, but he always just shrugged his shoulders. Miss that dude badly. Maybe sunscreens can cause an issue too, but I figure the odds are better than undetected skin cancer that will kill you 100% of the time.

Off soap box.
Sorry about your friend. My wife started making me go a couple of years ago, just to be safe. I fish a lot, go to Florida to fish several times a year. Started wearing sunshirts (what i call them), and a hat several years ago.

Happy Thursday & Prayers to all of us with our battles.

May 1, 2025: Beware of the work of the enemy to seduce you into old addictions whether it be drugs, alcohol, food, or the need for approval. Set a watch and refuse the temptations that seem so tantalizing. Rise up in the strength of the Spirit and overcome, says the Lord. 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

That is eye opening, to say the least.

Need for approval is on same plane as drugs, or alcohol? Wow. You have to stay vigilant in this life. About the time you have it figured out. God opens your eyes, about .0001% more. As our humanness can only handle very little.
