Runner has to avoid him if he is in the process of fielding the ball as he was as the throw was coming in. He can go around or slide feet first and if he was blocking it and not fielding a ball, they would call obstruction. If you want to know how to handle it as a runner, put on last year's Tennessee CWS final game and watch Hunter Ensley do it.I mean what is the base runner supposed to do, the catcher was blocking him from having a clear path to home base and he didn’t even have the ball
They wanted to be sure they got it right according to the rule. It was a very big plan. The umpire everyone is saying is crap and makes bad calls actually made the WRONG call. His call was overturned. You don't have to like the rule because I hate it. They did it due to Buster Posey being in the wrong position on a play that broke his leg. I miss the days of Hal Mcrae coming into second like a freight train and the infielder knew he was coming. Don't hate the umpire or the review team. Hate the rule. They reviewed the play for 7 minutes...
So the rule says a catcher can block home plate without the ball? Yes or no. No qualifications or excuses. They wanted to be sure they got it right according to the rule. It was a very big plan. Willie cussed at me when I asked him for an autograph when on spring break in Fort Myers as he walked to his car with NO other fans around. He was upset with the way fans had treated him and yelled where was I last year and I said I don't know but not here. He said he wasn't either. This is the spring after his cocaine jail year. I had waited in the rain and his GF had seen me waiting in the rain for awhile. Hope she gave him heck because I asked nicely and with respect. Back then the players just parked in the grass at the park. Later we hung out with Quiz and Frank White and talked about it. They said he saw me as a fan and not an individual and he had to wear ear plugs because of all the crap fans yelled at him about drugs the previous year. So we got a boom box the next day and played the song Cocaine while he played.Willie Wilson (1980) and my childhood favorite........Garry Templeton (1979)
I will say that the catcher set up there without the ball yet. You can see that in the relplay. I understand why they called it, but it’s tough to tell someone to avoid the catcher with the hope they call obstruction. They don’t always get it right. I would have probably slid right and used my hand to hit the plate. I understand the need to avoid collisions, but I don’t think the catcher did it correctly either. If you watch MLB catchers now, they set up well in front of the plate, take the throw, and then move toward the runner. Bang bang and tough to lose on it.It does when he is in the process of fielding it which he was. If not fielding it he can't.
He was legs split as the ball was coming in. Catcher was playing to catch the ball and tag and was initially straddling the base. The hit doesn't look so bad in slow motion but live looked brutal. When he used both hands and arms moving forward to push him then it wasn't just contact it looks like a push when you run over a catcher. It is a bang bang decision and we saw something similar in a travel game except it was 100 percent clear that kid went for the kill at the travel game because their parents and that kid had been dogging the catcher for some things. Before that was over, I wanted to punch some idiot parents but ended up getting between the catcher's dad and one of the other team's parents. I got him calmed down then the idiot spouted off something like he was a puss .... just like his son. I felt like Jim Carey in the meme..........I was like oh boy..........here we go..........................but I was able to push him back again. The police showed up and were about to arrest the player if our catcher's parent wanted to press charges but he didn't.. The catcher is playing at a d3 school as a wrestler and baseball player. He literally held back from killing the kid and he could've. Nose was bleeding and thought to be broken but thankfully was not. It was a wild time but trust me, his hit was way more aggressive than the one last night. It is why we have the rule but I do miss baseball like it used to be.I will say that the catcher set up there without the ball yet. You can see that in the relplay. I edited my original post. You see MLB catchers set up well in front of the plate now- much more than that catcher. Take the throw glove side, and then lunge or make the tag. It allows a slight lane to the plate that I didn’t think existed on that play.He was legs split as the ball was coming in.
