You don't know the dynamic on the team. Maybe things work out if they play Nico but maybe the older guys are passed that Joe waited for his chance and the coaches played the kid. Without an intimate knowledge of the locker room you are just spouting fan speculation that is not based in fact.
I would love to see Nico start in the bowl game just to see if our players come out with fire in the eyes. They seem so listless (hopeless?) with Joe out there.

Do agree processing speed is a premium in this offense. Why some guys just weren't good fits, like HB15, no idea how quick Bray was tbh. But a valid concern.
That's my biggest criticism of heupel. Dumb it down however far enough you need to so Joe can move quickly.

You saw it at arky with kj Jefferson. Similarly not so smart qb. Enos insisted on the full play book, they couldn't score. New OC comes in, throws out 2/3 of the play book, they go into the swamp and score a ton of points. I get you're not going to win the sec with a limited playbook, but if your QB can't handle it, you have to change something to maximize whatever potential he does have.

Maybe I’m just an overall positive polly (I’m really not if you could read my group chats) but I’m not really worried about the team moving forward. We’ve seen what the offense can do with a good qb (Oklahoma, Mizzou, ucf, and us previous 2 years).

As long as Nico is as advertised, we win 9 or 10 next year and sh*t is happy around here again. Think some of ya need to breathe and relax and accept this szn for what it is.

We will be fine

Yeah the team looked real happy with Joe the last couple of lweeks. I’m sure switching to a five star QB would make them upset. And not losing by double digits would really suck.

Does our offensive scheme hurt the development of our defense (specifically the back 7)? I probably just have orange colored blinders on but it seems like so many of our linebackers and secondary players look lost in pass coverage.

Linebacker and safeties especially. Has nothing to do with our offense though. Bad coaching and lack of talent/effort.

What about when they scored 10 points the following week vs a team that just lost by 3 TDs to NM St? And Jefferson threw for 116 yards in that game…

I know your point, but it’s insulting to even Vanderbilt to have you baseline be those 3 coaches.
Well there isn't much else to go off of. This is modern UT football. If we want to go way back, in a different time altogether, and the complete OPPOSITE level of success, then look at Fulmer...went...8-4 in year 3.

This season hasn’t gone as well as some expected. We will still go 8-4 (probably) which isn’t a failure (look at Florida). There are some questions that need to be answered though.

Outside of DL, OL, and RB, I am just not seeing player development. Whether that’s coaching or players idk. There were times this year when player motivation and accountability were an issue. That falls squarely on the coaching staff. Heupel has built up a good amount of goodwill so far, but that can turn on a dime very quickly. Next year will be telling in was this year more this years crop of players or more or the coaching staff.

We’ve recruited better in the secondary than we have in a while. Just need them to develop. Martinez is the one who’s recruited those guys. Pruitt left us with a bunch of 3 stars. I said it last year, and some didn’t care.
Lots of truth. We're just now getting talent injected back into the back 2/3rds of the defense. Weren't left with much and 2021 class is empty.

How the heck have you been watching this offense and not realized that it has been scaled back a massive amount to try and not overload Joe? Just from a scheme standpoint, our passing plays are very limited in their creativity while they've been a lot more creative with their blocking to open up running lanes.

I am speaking more to the depth, which I think is the point the coach is making as well.

Putting that aside, your comment/framing is a bit disingenuous. He didn't have a full cycle with the 2021 class and he's put 22-23 together despite restrictions.

He also had several big fish on the hook, even in this class, that went to higher bidders. All the more reason to promote the Vol Club.
Missouri has 12-14 transfers in the two deep…. There were options…. It is also worrisome that none of our OL recruits seem capable enough to even fill a back up role.

People seem to act like the immediate, linear success model that Saban created is the norm when it's the complete and udder outlier.

Dabo stumbled and fumbled for years. Kirby had a great Y2, like Heup (and starting out miles ahead) and then stumbled the next 3 seasons before putting it together in Y6. It took Fulmer 6.5 years to put it together.

this is very true…. it’s hardly ever a linear progression.

I think they're getting the most they can out of a lot of the seniors. The talent deficiencies in that group provides a lower ceiling for their play. Honestly, with slower DBs like McCullough, McDonald, and Lally out there...they should be giving up long TDs like crazy.

I agree. It gets tiring hearing how the portal cannot be depended upon. We have money to pay them and opportunity for them to play. We just need the staff to execute on the opportunity. We are not getting the elite HS recruits at the level of UGA and Bama. So plug and play is the best option for filling holes until/if that happens and who you do get out of HS develop.

Got to start thinking like successful NFL execs do. It is a different game now.
