Recruiting Discussion

You’ve not argued that keeping Darrington is better than any other PG option?

Not exactly. It's looking like there won't be a better PG option. Keep Darrington. I posted highlights from his UT bio.

Somebody just called WNML saying that Akinjo isn't interested coming to UT. Hubbs knew nothing about it.

Disagree 100%...I can name multiple better options than Darrington.

Hubbs knew nothing about Akinjo or about Akinjo not being interested? Was the callers name Big Ziti?

Couple names...

Koby McEwen 6’4” 195lbs guard from Utah State, originally from Canada and Barnes recruited him to Tennessee for a little while...averaged 32mpg 16ppg 5rpg last year, would be a sit 1 play 2.

Uros Plavsic is a 7’1” 215lbs Serbian big man who plays at HHCA in Chattanooga, he was committed to Cleveland State but just re-opened his recruitment. Has only been in the US for about the past 5 months so he’s relatively unknown and committed to Cleveland State early on as they have a Serbian assistant on staff Drazen Zlovaric, who got his start coaching at Tennessee under Barnes.

Uros intrigues me. If any one does leave, I wouldn’t care to get both. Uros especially

I watched a couple videos on Uros and he doesn't look half bad at all really. Could use some more weight but he looks skilled, especially in regards to his passing for a guy that size.

Alonzo Johnson was, IIRC.

6'10"

As was Kevin Nash. Brandon Crump too. Major Wingate and Marcus Haislip were listed as 6'10".

Brian Williams was 6'10" or 6'11.

Rupert Breedlove was 7'0" and Greg Longshore was 6'10", but apparently did not log varsity minutes.

D.J. Burns had a great junior year at York Prep and wasted no time putting in work with the Georgia Stars as they started their season at the LakePoint Tip Off Classic last weekend. The 6-foot-9 post player out of South Carolina is impossible to defend on the block right now with his combination of a big, strong body along with great foot work and soft touch.

Burns said the schools he’s been talking to the most lately are Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. He’s been on campus multiple times at Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Georgia: “I haven’t talked to the new coach yet. I talked to Jonas Hayes the other day and he’s just been telling me how the team is still getting adjusted to the new coach and checking in on me.”

Georgia Tech: “I talk to Josh Pastner a lot. He’s been giving me a lot of information about the school. I’ve been there a few times and I like it.”

Ohio State: “They started recruiting me about a month ago. They’ve just been giving me information on their school and telling me about their basketball program.”

Tennessee: “I like them a lot. I like the way they run plays for the post players. Everything they do starts with their post players.”

Virginia: “I like Virginia. I like the way they play. They have done a great job there.”

RIVALS REACTION

Burns admitted he’s not terribly far from a decision. He also admitted he’s down to a couple schools, but wouldn’t spill the beans just yet.

With an official visit set for Tennessee along with the fact he’s already been on its campus several times, it’s hard not to call the Volunteers the favorite here. Rick Barnes and his staff locked in on Burns early and appear to be closing in on the finish line. The other school to potentially watch here would be Virginia if it finds a way to get him on campus.

Hoping he commits soon, would be nice to head into the AAU open periods with 2 2019 commits and give the staff a very clear picture of who they should be pursuing.

I doubt that they'll relax. Barnes doesn't plan on every commit also signing. They should redirect their efforts somewhat though... just not count on the commits absolutely signing until it happens. Which is when? November? Oliver and/or Lanier could get other jobs which could upset the status of our commit(s).
