Some players still out there...
PG:
Courtney Ramey
James Akinjo
Tyler Harris

CG:
Anfernee Simons
Myreon Jones

Tennessee seems to be looking for a guard...obviously Simons and Harris are well known on this board, but the other guys...

Courtney Ramey was a Louisville commit, but left after that scandal, seems pretty open and has been some talk Tennessee evaluated him a couple weeks ago.

James Akinjo was a UCONN commit, he has re-opened after the coaching change, he lives in California so may be tough but if he was willing to go to Connecticut who knows.

Myreon Jones was a Memphis commit under Tubby Smith, he has re-opened his commitment...to me this one makes a lot of sense. Known as a guy who loves defense, he’s from Alabama but the instate schools haven’t prioritized him, think this could be a guy to watch who would be a great addition.

I've already scratched Simons and Harris. We aren't a legit option for either IMO. JMO.

The three guys who are now available due to coaching changes are more intriguing. Not overly familiar with any of them but I like that they were committed to 3 basketball schools.

Rivals ranks Ramey as a top 50 4*. Rivals ranks Akinjo as #112 4*. Myreon Jones is an unranked 3* by Rivals which I've said is my go to. I did however notice 247 has him as a 4* and that he has no composite score. What's the deal with him? Is he a prep school guy?

Not sure what the reasoning is, and I know you aren’t a fan of 247 but I will share this...Jerry Meyer said on radio that in their next rankings he would move him into the Top 50 and would be close to 5 star territory in Meyer’s opinion.

Again I know you don’t like 247 but that’s pretty high praise imo...he’s a guy that would fit like a glove under Barnes imo. A blue collar, defense and rebounding type player who can take the tough coaching, I’m honestly surprised we haven’t heard his name yet...however he’s more of a CG so maybe this staff is looking for that pure PG.

You talking about Myreon Jones?

Yes...Meyer was on radio recently discussing him with Memphis radio guys.

It's interesting to me he's a 4* on 247 and a 3* on Rivals but there's no composite given on 247.

That usually tells me that something unique is going on with him like maybe he was evaluated later in the year for some reason. Makes me wonder if Rivals just slapped a 3* on him for the time being.

That's why I asked if he was a prep school guy.

I think he is prep school from what I can tell

I’ll see if I can find anything

Penny Hardaway was hired for his ability to recruit. Ive seen several places say he needed a strong x's and o's assistant coach to offset his weakness at it.

They knew he'd be able to land these kids or they wouldn't have hired him.

Penny is going to get players. He has deep ties to grass roots basketball, and the people who can deliver players.

I don’t see the immediate success Memphis fans expect. He is going from coaching high school to coaching in a tough college conference. No matter what players he brings in, it’s going to be hard for him to meet the expectations.

You add some top talent to your team you can have a pretty quick turnaround. Look at Missouri. Of course I think the previous team mailed it in so it made them look worse than they actually were. But the excitement generated and fan buy in should be worth a couple wins. I mean playing in front of 600 people sucks. Penny is gonna pack that place.

I don't know how much of an improvement record wise they will make though. They won 21 games this year. They may win less games next year but their ceiling will be raised and their fans will have hope.

If they land Wiseman, Simons, Lomax and Harris I could coach that team to the NCAAT

What’s pretty funny is he got a horrendous deal, 3 years...I haven’t seen the salary yet but supposedly it was low baller and under $1m/year...they gave reassurances contract will be negotiated if this goes well but man...if I was him Memphis had to hire him, while city was calling for it, I think I would’ve held out for a better deal but then again he was also probably desperate for his break. His next step was a college assistant somewhere making $500k, he jumped straight from HS to college so maybe he didn’t care about contract.
