Recruiting Discussion

I've been out of the loop for a while (moved to China to teach, had a baby, etc). Can anyone bring me up to speed on top recruiting targets and how this recruiting class is shaping up?

Disappointing to say the least.

Started out with some nice targets: 4*'s Lance Thomas, Jermaine Samuels, Abu Kigab, Victor Uyaelunmo, Tyler Polley and Isaiah Stokes. Tennessee failed to land any of those guys, Stokes is the only one on that list remaining. Since missing on those guys the staff has turned up the heat on 3* big man Zach Kent, Kent and Stokes are the only 2 targets that remain on the board for the fall signing period it would appear.

If they land both it would obviously add the much needed size, but it definitely lacks the star pop many hoped for. Much like the '16 class these guys, Kent more so, would require a lot of player development from the staff. Stokes has seen his stock continue to rise and now is a 4* as well, so landing him would help a bit.

Are u still in China or r ya back?

What recruiting class? Right now there isn't one
You're right. When is the last time we have went this long into a recruiting class & not signed or have one single player committed?

Does anybody know the answer to that question? Has to have been years. I mean double digit years or way more than that. Not a single player committed or signed yet. No excuse for that.

Uh. the last 2 classes.
Having Phillips and Schofield already on board did save Barnes though.

I don't think any team that went 15-19 can saying they are too loaded at guard to not even call upon a Top 50 player 90 minutes down the road.

I didn't say we would get him, but some contact will be made.

Supposedly Hamilton Heights has or is going to go to a Tennessee basketball practice as a team. This staff is not recruiting him but Des Oliver(where is Lanier at?!) is going to go visit their school. The Vols are looking at a couple of Sophmore's there.

I'm most disappointed in Rob Lanier. I was excited when he was hired and thought based on his past was a heavy hitter in recruiting and thought he could pull us some 4 star's but he has been lead in only Kasongo and Alexander.

There are only 3 open spots to fill in the next two classes. But everybody is going insane because Barnes isn't reeling in 4 and 5 stars.

Most are going insane because he isn't reeling in anyone at this point. There's still hope for Stokes but would he prefer a program that will vie for the Big 12 title or one that's rebuilding. which is best for him?
I think we will get Kent and I'd be satisfied though he is somewhat of a project.

Since there are only two open spots there's no need to sign warm bodies to fill up the class. Especially when Stokes is still a possible addition. If Stokes was committed somewhere then I think Barnes would have filed the class. But if he gets Stokes then size is less critical. If Stokes passes then TN will probably have to sign some size... even if it's a 2 star or a Kasongo level player. If Stokes signs then the other player can be the best available at any position. Long story short, I think waiting on Stokes to decide means the one or two spots to fill up is on hold.

Kent visits Northwestern this weekend. says he'll decide then. I think he'll choose the coach that has the best reputation of getting players to the NBA. Said that much while he was here.
I think Kent is better than most think. He has played against really weak competition and it's taught him some bad habits. A season at Blair should answer some questions. Oh yeah. Kent's white.:)

So TN has two open spots with Stokes and Kent considering TN's offers. Imagine what the VN meltdown would be like if the scholarships were gone and one or both wanted to attend UT but there wasn't a spot available.

Parker is the star of this class, if we can get a big and a 3, we will be fine. We need someone who can come in and contribute day one. For example, Kevin knox

I knew they came by practice last Thursday I think, as a team. I figured with the timing of the decommitment and everything, atleast something partially could've been said.

I think the staff likes the international style and players Hamilton gets. It would shock me honestly if in the next couple years we don't get 2-3 kids from there.

But I'm no insider. I also do not think the situation is as doom and gloom with recruiting that others do.

Can't wait to see some Bone to Parker ally oops. Shake the rafters time.

The Vols did have a solid collection of underclassmen on campus last week for unofficial visits. That list was headed by Nashville’s Darius Garland, a four-star 2018 point guard, who’s being courted by a host of programs nationally. Tennessee has put consistent effort into recruiting Garland, but he’s going to have a ton of options and nothing to this point suggests the Vols are in the driver’s seat. In a 2018 class that as of now contains only one open spot, added a prospect of his caliber would be huge.

Other underclassmen who made it in were 2018 Atlanta area wing JoJo Toppen who has now been on campus a couple of times. The same is true of 2019 center D.J. Burns from Rock Hill, S.C., who was back in town along with 2019 point guard Chaz Gwyn from Winston-Salem.

Looks like we have a new guy with interest for 2017: Trip Day, Glenwood School, Power Forward

Only Vandy is the other school with interest but we've not offered yet. We're gonna have to go after lower tier players especially if Stokes & Kent don't commit to us.

Here is another possibility for 2017 if we can't get Stokes or Kent: Blake Williams, Cordova, Point Guard

No scholarship offer yet but we do have interest.
