Recruiting Discussion

I'm curious what the graduation rate was during Pearl's years. Again, I said "Thugs" but I'm admitting that that was too harsh of a label... it's just a quick way of saying there are off of the court flaws to deal with.

Even as good as guys like McRae and Maze appear to be today, what were their Predictive Indicators as 16/17 year olds? I don't know - which is why I've asked. It seems like McRae didn't have the greatest attitude initially... I believe I heard Tony Jones indicating that was the case.

IMO Barnes is working hard at putting together a group that is greater than the sum of the parts and steering clear of guys that are possible disruptions. I'm sure he'd like to add a Chism or Hopson to the brew if those types are possibilities. Those don't come available every year though.

As far as graduation rates under Pearl. It was 100 % of the kids who stayed in the program 4 years. Every kid that he signed who stayed graduated.

I'd never herd that before. I don't suppose it's a whole lot of guys, I was surprised that Pat only had something like 161 players in 40+ years (161 are her four year players I assume). I guess if they are going to fail due to academics, they're long gone before being around for four years. Those that leave early for the pros aren't around for four years so they're excluded. JUCOs don't fit the four year criteria either... but I bet most of those graduated as well. So there are probably only 12+/- four year players. Good to hear that they all received degrees. Weezy, Brian Williams, McRae, Pearl Junior were 4 year Pearl signees. I guess Bradshaw signed with Buzz, Hopson only played 3... other names are escaping me right now.

It would be interesting to see a comprehensive list of every Pearl signee at UT that included their after college basketball bio.

Pearl was the coach for 6 years. If he signed 4 per year that's only 24. Seems like the number should be much higher... but I guess it's close. Maybe 30+/- total signees when
accounting for attrition/JUCOs/John Fields.

Was Ramar Smith a 4 year player?

Pearl signees (I think):
Marques Johnson
Tyler Smith
Ramar Smith
JP Prince
Wayne Chism
Duke Crews
Steven Pearl
Ryan Childress
Josh Tabb
Brian Williams
Renaldo Woolridge
Scotty Hopson
Phillip Jurick
Daniel West
Bobby Maze
Emmanuel Negadu
Cameron Tatum
Kenny Hall
Melvin Goins
Skylar McBee
Josh Bone
Tobias Harris
Jordan McRae
Trae Golden
John Fields
Jeronne Maymon

Cuonzo signed Washpun, Stokes, Chievous, Makanjoula, Miller, Richardson. Pearl recruited Stokes, I don't know about the others. I'm pretty sure that Richardson was 100% CCM's recruit.

Buzz's (I think):
Major Wingate
Jemere Hendrix
Stanley Asumnu
Dane Bradshaw
Andre Patterson
Chris Lofton
Jordan Howell
JaJuan Smith
CJ Watson

Then there are a handful of walk-ons and/or guys that were only around a short while or barely saw the court. Ben Bosse, Tyler Summitt, Eddie DeBro, Justin Jackson, Tanner Wild, Quinn Cannington, Tony Passley to name a few.

I think that it will be critical to be in the 2017 NIT in order to attract a highly rated recruit or two or three. No player wants to play D-1 college ball and never experience the NCAAT. It's hard to believe that Allan Houston was one who did not in his 4 years at UT.

Not so hard to believe when you realize that his coach was Wade Houston.

Eh, not really. Houston was pretty much THE team the whole time he was here. There's a reason the team after him only won about 5 games.

It's amazing he was able to get some of those teams in the NIT.

Eh, Greg Bell, Lang Wiseman, Corey Allen, Carlus Groves, Stevie Hamer, Lamarcus Golden, Steve Rivers, Muchael Curry.

This is Barnes second class. I reckon you can let this pass, but if the 2018 class insist of the same thing, he's gotta go, or step it up. That simple.

Not johnsons fault, he's a good player, but it's just what Barnes has done before. Tennessee if done right, can be the best job in the sec.

It can be the best. Look at what we have. The tradition. The fans, the staff, facilities, it's all there.

Tradition: if you think our "tradition" is better than Kentucky you're delusional.

Fans: look at average attendance, even during Pearl years, UK was always better.

Facilities: Tennessee has wonderful facilities, top 5 if not top 3 in SEC, but again UK's are better.

I get you're biased, more than anyone I've ever met, but it would take 20 years of Tennessee dominating at a level thy never have to even be in the same conversation as Kentucky.

Tennessee is a football school, to fit what we do is incredible. Ernie,King, lofton, stokes, etc.give me a team of Tennessee greats over the ky's any day. And that's not being biased.

Expectations aren't off the charts as they are in KY though. That can make the TN job more appealing. DB's argument isn't which program has more tradition.

So you think Tennessee is a better job than Kentucky? And expectations at Tennessee are much higher than most other SEC schools, that's one of the main reasons why Cuonzo Martin is no longer the coach at Tennessee, you can't have it both ways.

To me it's pretty obvious we are #2 in facilities.

Who you got being better besides the obvious?

I haven't checked them out closely, but I know Ole Miss and Auburn just poured a ton of money into brand new facilities iirc, was thinking Florida was also getting set to build new ones.

I'm not saying we aren't #2, again I've not looked closely at the new upgrades done around the league, but I can assure we aren't #1.
