I know I don't need to explain it to you, but you have to build relationships with these kids early on. Especially in basketball recruiting. Going to a new school that has been in NCAA turmoil and recruiting top flight talent is not easy. We may think our program is a great program, but our perception with kids sucks right now. That has to be corrected before the big time guys start giving us hard looks. Right now, Barnes needs to lock up guys that he thinks he can develop. Jalen Johnson is an elite athlete that looks like he has some promise. Fulkerson looks like a decent stretch four that probably needs a red shirt year but looks like he has some promise if he can bulk up. Josh Bone is a very capable point guard who may not be all conference but can hold his own in this league for sure.
People on here are crucifying Barnes when we haven't even seen what kind of product he's putting on the court. We're also bashing kids he's recruiting before they've even played their senior year of high school. I'm not saying Fulkerson is gonna be great, but Barnes track record of putting players in the NBA and developing talent IMO means he deserves some sort of benefit of the doubt. He's a hall of fame coach and the best coach we've had since Pearl.
The recruiting class will not be top 15 this year. Right now, we need to recruit 3 and 4 year players who can develop in the system and give us some quality stability. I see that in our class right now. The elite talent will come in the next few classes I believe.
Nobody is wanting him fired and everyone will wait and see what it looks like. Its a message board and people are going to give their opinions based on the info at the time. If building relationships is so important then how do you explain what Auburn, Miss State, and Alabama is doing in a short time with their recruiting. I do feel he will be better next yr at least that's my hope.
Neither do the other 3 schools you listed in the post you quoted

Look at who the coaches are and their track record with shady dealings in recruiting. Pearl and Howland? Surely you see why. Avery Johnson not so much but he was a former NBA head coach.
We have better facilities, better fan support and the Texas name doesn't carry weight in basketball like it does football.
You can keep posting about Texas being a heavyweight but it is not.
We don't have better fan support. They have more money, more resources
Texas is a better basketball job than Tennessee, especially right now. Consider the fact that Shaka Smart didn't even interview for the UCLA job. He then took off for Texas. That shows how coaches view the Texas job. A sleeping giant.

I highly doubt Pearl is going to be doing anything illegal.
Howland is fair, but Howland also has an absolute incredible resume and ridiculous track record of putting players in the NBA that is really helping him at Miss State.

There's not that many, though. The kid who is the current Texas PG is one, but almost all the other guys he's put in the pros have been top 100 type kids.
We absolutely have better fan support. I would bet that we have better basketball facilities as well. The "Texas" name doesn't carry the same weight in hoops. As far as having more money, yeah they have more but we have enough. Money doesn't matter if you have it. Tennessee has it.
I don't know why Shaka took that job and I don't know why he passed on lots of great jobs. Maybe he worried that his window was closing. Maybe he wanted out at VCU. Maybe his wife finally decided to be more open to a change.
Him taking that job doesn't make Tennessee a bad job. The right coach at the helm of the REAL UT basketball program can win big. Pearl proved that and if he hadn't screwed it up, you would still be seeing it right now.
Where did I say that Tennessee is a bad job?
Texas is a better basketball job than Tennessee. It's pretty simple. That doesn't mean Tennessee is a bad job.
Texas is not a better job than Tennessee in my opinion. Is it in a better place right now than Tennessee? Yeah, you could make that argument.
Barnes can recruit just as well at TN and he did at TX. This "Texas" mystique you speak of does NOT exist.
Yes, it is. They have more in-state talent by a wide mile, they have more money and resources, they have a bigger name nationally, they boast more stability, they have more higher profile NBA players that can bring exposure to the program, etc.
Tennessee MIGHT have better facilities. Might. Saying Tennessee is a better job is blind.
