Basilio is giving Barnes some heat on the radio right now. Jerry Meyer sent out some tweets talking about Barnes struggles on the recruiting trail which triggered a call that lead to the discussion.
Some points by Basilio and Sinclair:
- lots of things run thru the assistants now instead of Barnes
- no basketball camp this summer
- media and marketing has been non existent
- worried that Barnes is semi-retired and thought he was taking a sleepy basketball job
- thinks Barnes was a "CYA" hire made by Hart
- Barnes was hired because he was the easy fit for what we needed
- Barnes should be very visible right now and he's not
- Season tickets are WAY down
I know you won't agree with this and it's fine, but much like SD I think it should be noted your support of Basilio, you're a big fan of his. Basilio lost a lot in my book with his parading of Tyndall and ridiculous support for him, it still continues on almost a daily basis on his show. So for a guy to be such a huge supporter of the former coach who scratched his way to .500, it's no surprise to me to see him already doubting Barnes before he has even coached a game.
I would be much more concerned if this trend appeared to be continuing, and believe me I understand you gotta land the guys, but who we have offered, have made priorities, had on campus, and evaluated at their schools are much better prospects than what we were after in 2016. Just maybe, let the guy coach a few games, see how the class rounds out, and possibly put some stock into what VQ has been saying since Day 1: that this program isn't perceived in a stable manner currently, we were lacking evaluation days, were lacking official visits, had to fill the '15 class first, and maybe most of all Hart made clear we had to keep our nose perfectly clean.
Like I said, I would be more worried if 2017 wasn't looking likely to be better, but so far we are in on some very talented guys for that class.

To your 2nd post, I've said the same thing about recruiting. 2017 will give us a better picture of what Barnes can do here on the trail.
Basilio's point (and what I'm starting to worry about) is that it is starting to look like Barnes is going through the motions a bit. His term is "sleepy."
So being clean is somehow hurting him now but not earlier in his career?
Hogwash
Well where I see a perfect example is Ado. Call it hogwash or whatever you want, it has been mentioned by people that Ado has a handler and that you have to "please the handler" to even talk with Ado. If Hart told Barnes no shady stuff, then that would absolutely explain why Barnes and his staff have literally shown Ado no attention at all, no?
Again did staying away from the "dirty" side of recruiting hurt him before now?
The answer is how will i am to accept that as an Excuse for things so far
Also kind of funny now seeing you say Ado was passed on for something other than his talent. Lol
Simple question, if he comes in already behind on the '16 class and then is told that he can't recruit any guys with some shady people surrounding them, does that make his pond to fish from bigger or smaller?
Barnes was out on the recruiting trail as much as the assistants were during the AAU live periods this summer, so I'm guessing that's not where the term "sleepy" is coming from?
My guess is that it's because he's not out painting his chest, parading up and down Cumberland Ave., or speaking to the sororities. As we have seen with Bruce, that can help, as we saw with Tyndall who did all those things, it can be pointless...the one thing that triumphs all of those is WINNING.
Armani Moore said it again today, and it's been documented all summer, Barnes spends more time in the gym with current players than most head coaches do. He has worked with KP to completely redo his shot, he's also worked with Phillips, Hubbs and Baulkman on their shots notably, and I'm gonna guess there's some other things as well we haven't read he's likely worked with guys on. Typically the in gym, outside of regular practice stuff is left to assistants or even GA's, it appears Barnes prefers that role, so that makes him "sleepy"? I don't agree with that at all.
It has been noted by just about every official visitor how available and visible Barnes was on the players visits, and also further illustrating the above point how hands on he was with players not only during practices but outside of that setting also. If leaving the bulk of recruiting to his assistants, while he takes care of the current roster and works on their development, while playing closer when prospects get to campus, then so be, but I would hardly call it "sleepy".
Simply put, much like we've heard people say about Butch with his "dumb sayings" or "passive coaching", if he is 5-1 nobody is saying anything about any of those things. If Barnes goes 20-10, sneaks this team into the NCAAT, lands Bruno Fernando in the spring (which VQ says he's likely to visit), then how much of this "sleepy" talk will exist?

Absolutely not. Recruit those kids within the rules and get it done just Like he has done his entire career if indeed he is a squeaky clean as we think
I agree it's early to be making any rash judgements. However ignoring negative signs is as equally wrong IMO
So you're telling me there are no recruits who in order to recruit you have to bend the rules a little? You know better than that and are simply looking to argue, as usual.
Who said he's done things squeaky clean his whole career?

like I've already stated, the 2017 targets look much more like what you'd expect when he was hired, if we are talking about 0 top 100 commits in 2017 then yes, we have a serious problem.
Am I disappointed Barnes didn't come in here and salvage a top 10 class simply because of his name, absolutely. Am I also disappointed that the '16 class isn't top 10 simply because of his name and resume, absolutely. However, I'm also realistic and realize the situation he took over, the hand he was dealt, and apparently the way he was to go about recruiting as instructed by Hart. As I've said, if he doesn't sign a single top 100 player in the 2017 class then I will be much more worried, but right now if he lands Fulk and Williams, and can land Fernando in the spring, that's a pretty decent class given all things considered IMO.
