Pons or Walker could redshirt too. Bone or Alexander makes sense, but I think they'd resist. Kent is the most likely, but only to gain strength. His basketball skills are already pretty good. Alexander needs to work on his strength as well as his skills. Really Turner would be a string candidate had he been able to play as a true freshman.

To answer the question... if it was a normal situation and the coach is putting a priority on building for the future, then Kent is the logical candidate. I think that Alexander needs it more, but it would be unusual to RS a junior that started a lot as a sophomore.

So we agree Kent is most likeliest, you just expect Barnes to roll with 16 players where as I think he tries to continue to build and develop guys and redshirt at least one. Will be interesting to see what happens.

I don't expect to see any walk-ons get meaningful minutes, UNLESS the team is playing without any passion or nobody can hit an outside shot. But with a long bench I don't expect to see anybody on the roster go at anything less than full speed. And there are several capable outside shooters. There may not be an automatic Chris Lofton type of shooter, but there are 4 or 5 guys that defenses won't be able to leave open. Daniel, Darrington, Bowden, and Schofield for sure. Bone, Turner, and Johnson can't be left open either. Hopefully Pons can be included with those 7, but I get the feeling that he's a bit limited. Actually Kent has a pretty decent stroke and Williams is working to improve his. Even Alexander has a decent mid-range 12-15 footer. Really only Walker (and maybe Fulkerson) might not be a threat to step out and drain it from the perimeter.

When Barnes said something like he'd love to have 5x 6'7", interchangeable guys to put in the court he wasn't joking around. Basketball today is different than it's ever been before. Not nearly as many teams today are building traditiona 1-5, PG, SG, SF, PF, Centers like there used to be. Guys like JP Prince, Moore, and Richardson have been playing mini-Magics at Tennessee. I still prefer a traditional PG, but nowadays they can be liabilities on defense.

Sign me up for all the college 6'7" pure 2-guards we can get. Lol.

You always do this. I said 6'4-6'7. Most would be in the 6'4. 6'5 range. Its not like we didn't have Hopson, McRae, and J Rich before. All 6'6 or 6'7.

In the NBA, I'd agree. In college, 6-4 SGs are a dime a dozen. Plenty big enough for the college game.

Looking at the 2017 shooting guards the elite guards are 6'4 or better for the most part. All the 5 stars are at least 6'4. Out of 37 four stars or better on Rivals 25 are 6'4 or taller. yes there are some elite 2 guards below 6'4. Most are 6'4 or better. That has been missing the last couple of years since J Rich left. Besides Lofton all of our good 2 guards have been taller than 6'4.

Jajuan Smith too. When Tennessee starts landing these "elite" SGs, then we can bicker over 2 inches. Until then, I'll take a great shooter if he's 5-10 or 6-10. Makes no difference to me so long as they can fill it up. Like I said, college basketball is littered with top-notch SGs under 6-4. At this point, why be picky?

I'm not convinced that Zach Kent redshirts. He's actually got some skills, he's the tallest player on the roster, and getting to the NCAAT ASAP is critical to shut up some of the noisy critics that do nothing but poison the program.

I agree with this. I don't see anything about Kent's skill set that is not needed on this team. Now, if Alexander actually has taken a step forward than we will not need Kent to play minutes. However, Alexander has played a lot of minutes for UT and has looked like the same player in all of them. I think there is a good chance that Kent could outplay Alexander and take his minutes. The combo of Walker and Kent may end up better than Alexander. No one redshirts under that scenario. Then Alexander may be looking for a new home next year.

I'm really hoping we do see that step forward from Alexander for two reasons: 1) we really need a more skilled big man and 2) Barnes needs to show his developmental skills. Kyle has been here since he was a freshman as the most blank slate of a player, so I feel that what we see out of Alexander this year will be a testament to Barnes's coaching and, to a lesser extent, Alexander's demeanor.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head here. I am most concerned about Alexander's demeanor.....he has not, at least yet, shown to have a killer (or any) instinct when it comes to competing. If Barnes can get it out of him it will be a testament. I just can't really think of many players that have developed a killer instinct over time. I am not sure coaches can give a player that.

Look t the final 4 last year. All had very good big men playing very well. Some had 2-3 players who were around 7 feet tall. Tennessee has not had good 1s, 4s, or 5s in a number of years.

Grant Williams, Jarnell Stokes, Jeronne Maymon...all within last 5 years. None were prototypical big men, but very effective nonetheless at the 4 and 5.

I bet if you analyze the teams in the entire NCAAT field there will be far more without the lumbering 7 footers. We're a few levels away from worrying about putting a Final Four roster on the court. I'll be happy to get back to the best 4 in the SEC for now.

And they were eaten alive inside by the bigs they played.

Incredible hyperbole right there.

In 2013-14, Stokes and Maymon were 1st and 3rd in the conference, repectively, in total rebounding, and Stokes was also 1st in player efficiency rating. Not to mention he averaged a double-double.

Last season, Williams was 5th in blocks and 5th in player efficiency rating as an unheralded freshman.

I guess we have different definitions of "getting eaten alive". Did/Do they win every battle inside? No, of course not. But you said we hadn't had a good 4 or 5 in years, and that is simply ignorant.

Yep.

Maymon and Stokes were commonly referred to as the "best low post duo in the country". Not sure how he forgot about that duo.
