Record time for throwing in the towel

Reports of our death are a tad premature .
I think the team will improve as the season goes along, but the fans are the weakest I have seen in my 80 years od living. The fans who have not given up seem to be we old farts who have seen the good and bad for many years and know that the good times will roll again-soon. I was at the game last Saturday and was as disappointed as any of you. I have lived through too much to let set backs kill my positive outlook on life and my football team. I have more confidence in this football program and
coaching staff than the losing attitude of the most of the current football fans. I have had 4 surgeries in the last 9 years and still shot my age in golf 2 years ago. One does not give up and except/expect losing if one is to find succeed in anything they want to accomplish. With faith, attitude, time, and hard work our football team will accomplish their goals that have been set for the future. I am confident I will see Tennessee win another SEC championship while CJP is coaching at Tennessee.. It will not be easy but it will be done.

While I agree we are all impatiently awaiting some semblance of a competitive football team, I dont plan on giving up any time soon. My husband is a fan of another SEC institution that shall remain nameless, and we have discussed several times if a lack of production on the field leads to alienation of fans. I think it does, unless there is a deep seated connection to the team. I went to UT, I have great memories of my time there, and while I might grumble over our performance or lack thereof, I will continue to support them. I do think attendance will suffer until performance improves. But that is completely understandable. You don’t pay good money to watch a terrible show in the seats when you can do so at home for free.

Go Vols

I have never in my life seen so many give up on a Tennessee team so quickly. New low achieved. We need some sunshine pumpers ASAP.
This new "we have sucked, we suck now, and we will suck tomorrow" attitude has to go. If losses are a given, why even bother to watch? This is what a program's death looks like.

I'm afraid you are spot on, growing up in the late 60's 70's and 80's Tennessee football was a large part of my life going to almost every game and all the bowl games.
There were some Up's and down's, but the Vols almost never were embarrassing, I hope fans can regain that pride once again and at least witness the Vols compete with the best teams in the SEC
Patience is the new word now
Go Vols

The sad truth is Tennessee is on the verge of losing an entire generation of fans. Some kids will be born into and accept being a TN fan, but so many kids are front runners. It’s why you see so many Bama “fans” TN needs to get its **** together and fast. The fans are out of patience.

All the more reason to hate Alabama.

Im not saying im giving up my fandom or anything. But I’m not very invested right now. Most fans have gotten to that point I think

Understandable it happen with all fans when losing becomes the norm, just human nature

And a good reminder that some things are much more important than a game:)

Our fan base is more emotionally weak than a teenaged girl. Its no wonder why people make fun of the Vols fans.

This post drips in irony coming from one of the bigger drama queens on this site.

The greater sources of amusement for most opposing fans have likely come from the games taking place on the field the past decade and the occasional debacles that double as coaching searches in Knoxville.

Yeah thats clearly what I meant. You are part of the ones I was talking about. Congrats.
I like you as a poster. Agree more often than not. But BOT, you cant call me emotionally weak and then make the connection/observation that other fans are laughing at us. Imo, going through life fretting about what others are think, say, or do is the very behavior of emotionally immature folks.
Im a Vol fan. Dont care what any fan anywhere thinks about me. And that includes other Vol fans.

I’m with you. I rarely get into conversations with complete strangers about football, but I fully expect my friends to bust by balls about how bad we are right now. It’s what me and my friends do. When we stop sucking, my friends will start busting my balls about something else.

Battered Vol syndrome.. It's only took a decade of ineptitude to achieve.. We just expect the worst anymore and it usually happens.

Exhibit A: Pope running in molasses like slow motion and having ball knocked thru end zone.

I believe in the current coaching staff. If fans want to jump ship than so be it, frankly it makes no difference. I feel once we are competitive, not winning, but competitive, I think many will return. This next four week stretch will tell a lot. Many are hanging the season on the FL game but in all honesty if one takes away the short field (because of turnovers) the game then it would be a different story. Who is to say that FL won't beat Mississippi St. tomorrow, will they then be legitimate in the media's eyes being that Mississippi ST is ranked? KY could they really be that good? Media and fans a like are basing a season from week to week which in all honestly is stupid. It won't be till around week 6 or 7 that we will know who contenders are and who are not. The way I see it is that we lost to a ranked 3-0 WV team and a 3-1 SEC team. Could be worse, could have lost to Old Dominion University, how VA Tech is still ranked beats me.

The people who gave up aren't reading your posts. The frustrated people reading your posts that I think you aimed your comments at are just ready for a little sunshine to beam down on Smokey's ass.

Is it too much to wish we didn't turn the ball over 6 times at home?

Is it too much to wish we scored as many points against UTEP as the middle school team from Vegas was capable of?

I've stayed on the side of giving previous coaches a chance way longer than most for this very reason. As GAVOL said, wholesale change is brutal. But hell could we just get lucky at some point?

I hate sucking cause all that's really left to do is debate our own opinions on each other. There is little to debate about this team having a good season, or this coach having any magic bullets to get us quickly past our current standing.

Hope to hell I am wrong but I have blindly believed way too many times before and...just nah. This will be a long rebuild.

Exactly.

It was an absolute gut kick but I couldn't help but chuckle a little bit myself at that play Saturday night after the initial shock wore off. Told everyone I was with that it was a fumble even before it was reviewed.

That play pretty well summarizes this program currently.

If you are still posting on VolNation, after the last 10 years, the statement of “giving up on a Tennessee team so quickly” is absurd. We have had the worst 10- year span compared to any elite program in the past 50 years. So, if you are still posting, you still love your VOLS. Any fair-weather fans or bandwagon fans have left a couple presidents ago.

Being realistic of a 3 or 4 win season is not giving up. It is being realistic at this point. If you are still saying 5+ wins for this year, you are just delusional.

The irony of this post is that I , one of the most heavily attacked as being a Negavol am having to be the voice of reason these days.

10 + years of sub-par to $%*# seasons have put a strain on this fan base, yet on gameday the stadium is still @ capacity or close.

Good try though.
