Recent Quarterback play....

I hope to God their idea of practice isnt JG passing at air with no pressure, cause his play sure reflects that. They need to be throwing dbs at his face on the practice field and scrimmage their little hearts out. Make him progress through his reads over and over again. They're probably already doing this. I just find it unfathomable how something hasn't clicked for him by now.
well, that's the rub right? the only thing we get is the one or two periods the media sees, which is usually routes on air.

but that's not all they're doing in the rest of the practice, they're doing 11 on 11 and all that stuff you mention and film study.

and all the feedback was really positive on JG thru out the pre season.

i think from what the coaches saw in practice and in meetings and film study, they're probably more surprised than we are at the production during the game and just the overall lack of vision and game management.

i don't know if he gets better or not, can't tell you that.....i don't have hte warm fuzzies about it though.

i feel fairly confident in saying though, if either Shrout or Maurer realistically gave this staff any inkling that they would be better, or that they would improve our chances of winning, they'd play that kid and sit JG.

and that may still happen if something doesn't change quickly.....just can't see it right now....i would expect/hope that at least one of the back ups gets some...hopefully lots of.... reps this week.

but i don't see any real chance at putting one of the freshman on the field at the swamp in their firs start. dont' see that at all.

Well all see how weak Maurers division was when Merrietta faces off with Edgewater in a few weeks. You may be surprised.
well, like i said, relative to Florida HS football......key word there.

Everything changes when there is an actual chance of getting hit on every play.

I was thinking about how Tennessee has had quite a few QB’s recently that probably could not have played anywhere else in the SEC other than for UT
We’ve had some busts at QB that’s for sure

Just think what a Mobil accurate QB could do for Pruitt’s and the Vols future[/QUOTE

Too much to think about! How about just an accurate QB

My son played QB...I’m no QB guru but I do look for some things. There were a lot of tell-tale signs that led me to believe the problem didn’t lie exclusively with the O-line last year. The OC situation hasn’t helped, but his skills are very basic, or undeveloped. The same mistakes are being made in his 4th year on campus....feet, pocket awareness, TOUCH on the ball, and most obviously pre-snap reads and progressions. Any one can hamper a kid, but he’s dealing with multiple problems. And the game still feels very fast to him it seems.

Yes, he blows "dump off" passes all the time!!! No touch and not very accurate, imo.

I have said this since he signed. The fact is he played in the lowest division of football, at a private school in New Jersey. This in no way compares to any level of, for instance, Georgia High School Football, and even 5A Tennessee football. The level of talent and athlete is vastly different. We obviously haven’t helped him much with OC turnover. I think our major competition for him was Rutgers, though Ohio State made some overtures (I think to keep Jones from landing him).

I hate it for him, because you could almost see it coming. You hate to see a kid get his dreams crushed, and be part of it. But truthfully, he chose poorly coming to the SEC.

Yep and senior year stats were horrible. Something like 1400 yards, 11 passing TD’s, and 6 rushing TD’s. You have to wonder about the fellers that recruited him and thought that he’d be a productive QB in the SEC.

Right. And I’m not arguing that but Florida HS football is a different animal.
i think that was my point? lol.

relative to FLorida HS football, that division is weak..ish.

put that division in SC, NC, TN or even GA it's probably a rung or two higher than it is in FL.....

Ahhhh. Gotcha now. You’re absolutely right. People will get a small taste in a few weeks. Just found it intriguing that we’ll have a gauge to reference after they play each other because Edgewater is a team within Maurers division that he played every year

that's fine. but HS just doesn't always translate to college...

there's a reason Maurer wasn't ever considered a highly rated kid. part of it was the style of offense htey played with. part of it was the compeitition level....part of it was some of the physical skills.....the kid is raw as hell, but has a ton of upside. the word on him has always been "high high celing, needs develoipment"....people love his arm and his competitive nature, and have said he was a really good leader on his HS team. the guys at that elite 11 camp he participated in, loved him, thought he was the most improved kid out there. kid works hard, wants to be great...........

same with Shrout. there were camp fascilitators (some former NFL guys) out there that were in awe of Shrout's physical traits, tools and techniques....but would also tell you that what he just doesn't have is overall experience and production to go with the physical tools and that would need developed.

these are not knocks on either kid. they're just realities for incoming freshmen that posses a lot of the attributes you want for a qb, but need development to peform at this level....consistently. neither has proven to have that consistency yet. i think both have flashed. we saw Maurer flash in the spring game and even last year, Pruitt talked very positively about Shrout's arm and touch on the ball.

I’ve got a feeling, in the not too distant future, there’ll be a lot of.....

“Why wasn’t Pruitt playing this kid _____, a lot sooner than this!”

We had him, think he went to Clemson when someone told him he did not fit our style!

Noticed JG still holds the ball too long and
looks at the player he throws the ball to
instead of moving his eyes around. He seemed to play better last year. Just an
Observation from a novice fan.

i wasn't saying JG is a field genearl...just to clarify.

and he is tough. he's proved that. another reason why i would have expected him to get a little physical in that play....

you wanna see your sideline get "woke"...........have your QB truck a defensive player in route to a drive sustaining first down.......
That was indeed a play where he could have sent a message......I think he is playing not to get hurt because he thinks he is going to the NFL.....
