I am blown away, after the great jobs he has done on FL, Bama, USCe, that he did not find a way to stop basically the same 5 frikin plays that Ole Miss was running. Everybody knew McCluster was all they had. How do you not have run blitz packages ready to get somebody in his face before he gets moving?? Monte continues to struggle with teams that have non-traditional offenses. Guess he has some things to learn even with his experience.

Tennessee has very average talent on defense. He's done a great job considering the players he has had this season and injuries/suspensions...

Yeah, if Monte has a weakness, the spread/option is it. We've had trouble with it starting with Ohio.

Our LBs are below average to say the least and teams have exploited that by running on the edges. Doesn't help that our best LB played like crap today.

Idiots...wait until after two more recruiting classes. We had very very bad luck on D this year with suspensions and injuries. The talent is very thin though our originl starters are good.

Monte is somewhat aware of the situation, dude. He's gotta work with what he's got, & it's pretty thin (thanks to Fulmer & his cohorts). When injuries occur, as they do to all teams, someone's gotta step up. The VOLS just don't have the horses...yet...but take heart Vol Nation, because glory awaits.

When they have a guy that nobody on your team is capable of tackling, there really isn't much you can do to scheme around the problem.

I don't know if a full complement of UT linebackers and DBs could have held their own or not, but it was clear that without them, we were simply overmatched.

I think he just expects people to get off blocks, and tackle. I'm calling this one lack of talent. Mostly because Monte knows more about D scheme than I know about walking.

It doesn't matter how good the trainer is if he doesn't have the animals. McCluster was caught behind the line time after time and the tackles were missed. Do you expect the old man to actually make the tackles?

I understand that we have SOME sub-par athletes on the field even with the first string. All the more reason you scheme to help them. Giving McCluster room ALL day without putting people in the backfield was a mistake. We have been able to get backfield pressure all season using blitzes but today we didn't.

Let's finger point at everybody, so we can blame this loss on someone! We've played over our head all year. We are fortunate to be 5-5. What were our expectations at the start of year! Mine was 8-4 maybe 7-5.

Monte should have been putting 2 spies on McCluster all game...this was a terrible game plan by Monte, but in his defense, our LB's and secondary were just plain AWFUL!

The reason we got blown out was because of poor tackling. Spread offense had nothing to do with it.

I agree with ya. I came home with the intent of going to this site to question our defense. They did damn good earlier in the season but seemed methodical today. How did we go from the 3rd ranked team to 13th and everyone is happy with it because we have Monte? The playing today on defense was pathetic!

Exactly. I noticed a number of times McCluster was all alone on one side of the field.

Yeah, fire Monte now! He has no idea what he's doing. Forget about all those top 5 NFL defenses he had or that Super Bowl ring on his finger.

I don't blame Monty. When he gets the players he recruits here, UT will be unstoppable on defense. The problem is UT is playing the 3rd string MLB and lost the starting FS before the game. Little depth.

Vols have two first-round picks on defense, Williams and Berry, and another 3-5th round guy in McCoy. How many other teams do you know with two first-round picks on their defense? Maybe Top 20 picks, at that...

As for the depth, every team has injuries at this point of the season -- S. Carolina is down five Def. starters, Ole Miss was missing their best pass rusher, Kentucky is banged up, Florida and Alabama have both lost marquee players.....

No coordinator is perfect, and none always come up with the best plan.

Monte has had a very good season considering this is his first year working with these players and this staff.

I've always said he's a great coordinator -- the only fundamental difference i have is that I have believed EB should be at FS where he can have freedom and teams can't run/throw away from him.

This is just a game that Ole Miss wanted a little more, IMO. It was a hard-hitting quality contest most of the afternoon.

It was good to see the UT offense protect the ball again with no turnovers, and Crompton continues to look sharp....gotta believe Hardesty is hurt.

Next week will be another challenge, and Monte will win more of these with his schemes than he loses. Lane is doing a great job as well, and I think Jim Chaney is a mastermind.
