Realistic fans, where do we go from here?

Losses to UGA and Bama. Win against North Texas. Probable wins against Vandy and USCjr. Flip a coin against Jizzou and uKY games, both are on the road and probable losses at this point.

Best case scenario is 6-6, worst is 4-8.

I think the team, the staff, and whatever was left of the fanbase after last week checked out tonight. Apathy reigns. ***John Ward voice***

Butch and Dave have a pow wow after the season ends where Dave tells him to make changes to the staff. Debord, Azzanni, and Mahoney are let go shortly thereafter.

I have to disagree with Kentucky being a probable loss (they went to OT at home with Eastern Ky tonight - an FCS team) but I agree with everything else. 7-5 is possible but 6-6 is more likely.

When you evaluate the team, coaches, and programs honestly, it seems like we're doing about 90% of things right. Our D has had a few lapses this year, but ultimately, I think our offense remains the source of our woes.

The offense was stuck in "park" in the 2nd half against Oklahoma. We played better against Florida, but we still had to rely significantly on trick plays and simply overpowering the other team to move the ball. This game, once again, the offense just stalled out in the 2nd half, leaving the defense on the field most of the time. When you run HUNH and you go 3-and-out constantly, you're putting a ton of pressure on your defense; which is why I view the defensive lapses as being more excusable than the offensive issues.

It's not that I dislike Debord, so much as I feel like he might've been the wrong hire. It seems like Butch needs an innovator that will challenge him as OC. Debord is a good OC, but I'm not sure he's what we need.

Mahoney gets a bad rap, but he had the toughest job coming in, and the O-line has been improving every week. I think he's the coach that VN is angry with, that doesn't deserve all the hell he's getting.

Yet, even as pass blocking has improved, our passing game has still looked miserable. The problem seems to be part Dobbs and part the receivers. Dobbs is off-target a considerable amount of the time and we have a few WRs that seem to drop a lot of passes.

I'm not sure of the solution. This isn't like it was with Dooley where the entire program was falling apart under his watch. It's just consistent problems with the passing game. That has been our issue for 3 years now.

Honestly I think we might limp our way to 6-6. Thats a huge step backwards IMO, but it is what it is. We absolutely need a new OL coach, OC and DC. Butch is going to have to clean house regardless of what happens from here on out. With our stable of coaches, I highly doubt we ever see more than 8 wins.

I agree with the OL coach,I'm just wondering what has happened to Janceks defense this year? I'm assuming it is the lack of good line backer play ?

I don't care if it's not extremely realistic but you have to call Peyton and see if he was serious about coaching QB's at UT. I mean, Peyton looks like this could be his last year especially with Kubiak taking a lot of the offensive control away from him. The timing couldn't be more right. All I'm asking is to make the call, ask and put a feeler out there.

Too much just to ask???

I think your on to something. I understand fans had high expectations for the season, but to be honest these expectations were too high. I think all the smart people knew this should be a 7 or 8 win season. The biggest problem for UT was how well they played in the first half of the Oklahoma game. If UT stayed behind by two touchdowns it would have been easier to stomach the loss.

The loss vs Arkansas was a product of two heartbreaking losses. You can tell this team is mentally exhausted. They need a refresh and a reason for excitement.

I'm not sure what the solution is but it is time to try something new. Maybe give Dormady a try, or make changes to the offensive scheme.

IMO 6-6 is worst case and 8-4 is best. Give this team and coach a chance. Think about the heartbreak of Kiffin leaving or the Dooley years when there was no talent. At least if Butch gets another year or two he will leave the program better than he found it. Something UT hasn't seen in many years.

Pipe dream. Peyton will be in the booth. Coaching takes a lot of work and commitment. He's retiring.

The only way Peyton would coach here is if cutcliffe were the head coach.

Not necessarily. BUTCH could have a couple clunker classes and he could have players transfer out of the program after this year. When someone is exposed as a shuckster who is in over their heads, players will leave in droves.

Obviously, CBJ isn't going anywhere for two or three years. The current financial situation will not allow it.

But, we could see some changes at coordinator positions and/or position coaches.

I doubt DeBord goes anywhere considering he just signed a contract.

Jancek? Martinez? Mahoney?

Are these guys safe? I believe after this season (5-7 or 6-6 realistically) Jones is going to be forced to make changes.

On to our opponents. Georgia and Alabama are going to beat us most likely. That sets us up with 5 losses. We should beat everyone else. Mizzou, UK, Vandy, NT, and South Carolina but we'll probably drop one.

6-6 will definitely be underachieving, but it will show whether or not the team is going to quit or come back to work each week.

Where do we go from here?

And yes, I'll be in Neyland every Saturday that there is a game. I've put up with the past 8 years and the 3 losses this year, so I'm not going anywhere.

Pretty much every assistant except for Elder and Gillespie should be updating their resumes. It won't be that drastic but DeBord was an awful hire and Jancek and Mahoney shouldn't be allowed near a football field again

Don't flatter yourself, this Vol squad will be lucky to win 5 games, while 4 may be more accurate and deserving

We're not beating Mizzou or Kentucky. B**** Jones has lost this team.

I'm afraid your right, I find it hard to support a team that quits and this team quit tonight at Neyland Stadium
very embarrassing indeed

a good sign for a 3.5 million/yr coach?

Mizzou and KY are better than that Arky team that beat us tonight. The only two teams that may be worse ate VANDY and uscjr. We could possibly only win two more games this year. This team is fragile!

Kentucky is definitely not better than Arkansas and neither is Missouri.

we had Florida and Oklahoma beat and they are good teams we laid a egg against arky but 3 games we was up by at least 13 points and lost.

Since playing for the SEC east is now over, this season is about a bowl (any bowl) and next season. I agree that CBJ will likely coach UT next year. I know berating the offense is very popular and the O certainly has its issues. However, coming into this season we all thought our offense would be a question mark due to OL and Dobbs passing.
What has me perplexed is the defense. Except for MLB it was supposed to be our strength. We cannot seem to get pressure, tackle, get turnovers, take good pursuit angles etc. I understand we've had injuries. But I never expected this.
CBJ better find some assistants on both sides of the ball and he better make a home run hire, otherwise, we are going through another change at head coach.

Let the season play out. Revamp offensive coaching staff in off season and move to pro style offense. Keep recruiting hard.

I think this all begins and ends with the OL

They are the same level of suck in game 5 of 2015 as they were in game 5 of 2014. Yeah there have been fewer sacks, but this only because this quarterback can actually run around.

I don't think Dobbs's accuracy is all that great, no, but I also bet that he'd be far better if he actually could hold onto the ball for more than a second before having to dump it or get killed. There is no way the receivers are able to get their routes fully run in that time. I'm not a fan of this offense, but I'm willing to bet it would fare much better if they had better offensive line play.

As far as the defense, while not perfect, I don't think it is horrible. They lost their cornerstone player in the second game of the season, and it feels like the line got a few more hits as time went on. It's just lose the religious opposition to actually wrapping your arms around an offensive player and TACKLE. That and if you get in, don't just run past the ball. Aim for it!

But honestly they look good enough to get Tennessee a win in the first 3 quarters of the game, but when the offense is down to just 3 and out every possession after halfway through the second quarter, their tanks are only so full.

So in this off season as he prepares for year 4, he needs to overhaul the offensive staff, starting with the OL coach. IF he doesn't do that, then it doesn't matter who comes in as OC, there is no way they'll get very far. They have to figure out how to sustain drives, and give the pocket an average life expectancy of more than .8 seconds.

For many years, I sat on the sidelines and kept my thoughts to myself about our sports program. It's time to let it out now, so here goes. For as long as I can remember, we have been led to believe that we were a top 5 college football program. Fans, we haven't been a top 5 program in generations. We were told that coaches would be lining up to come here because of the tradition, the facilities, the fanbase, and the fact that we played in the SEC. Lies, all a pack of lies, told with one thing in mind.....keep the fans pacified and the money rolling in. I scratched my head at the hiring of Dooley, but after the Kiffin mess, I halfway understood it, just like I understood why he had to go. But, I did more than scratch my head when CBJ was hired. I realized that when we started getting turned down by the big name coaches, that we were in trouble. Gruden wasn't going to come, and fans are stupid to think he even considered it. CBJ wasn't even on the top 5 list, and frankly I was shocked when he was hired. There is a huge difference between a Cincinnati Bearcat and a Tennessee Vol, something CBJ can't quite fathom. In short, he is not the coach to lead us back to the "promised land". Also, while I'm venting, Hart needs to go, as his hires are more than questionable. Whoever is ranking these recruiting classes, and giving us such highly ranked ones, needs to rethink what they're doing. Finally, as fans, we must accept that we are nothing but a middle of the pack SEC team. Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas A&M, Georgia, Florida, and Missouri are all better programs than we are. I think we are on the level with SC, Mississippi State, and Arkansas. Kentucky and Vandy are still the bottom feeders, and if Franklin was still at Vandy, they might be on par with us. Kentucky may very well beat us this year, as the game is in Lexington, but we usually find a way to win. So, don't jump off any bridges yet, but on the flip side, neither would I buy any stock in the log term future of UT football.
