I find myself to be not nearly as excited as a lot of my fellow Vols here. I think we did okay, but nothing to do cartwheels over -- just good enough to not be disappointed.
And everyone saying it was great considering the current state of the program? The program isn't in that bad a shape. We're doing a lot better now than we were in Butch's first year.
Not trying to be a party pooper. We can still finish strong and really get a stellar class. But we'll have to step it up to a higher level than we saw today.
- 4-8, first 8-loss season in 120+ years of the program
- 0-8 in the SEC, first ever winless season in the SEC
- blown out by Georgia, Missouri, Alabama and Vanderbilt
- 126th in the nation in run defense, 82nd overall, and only that high overall because teams didnt have to throw the ball to beat us so our pass defense aggregate numbers were relatively good....but we saw what happened when teams like Missouri and Vandy decided they would actually thriw the ball....they torched us
- struggled mightily to beat bad UMass and Georgia Tech teams
- went nearly 3 full games without scoring a touchdown
I dont know how YOU define the program isnt in that bad a shape.....I know how I define it, and based on the bullet points above, its a freaking train wreck, especially when you factor in a bad/broken culture.
Finally, I understand the caution given the last decade. Awful hires, awful results, constant punches in the gut.
But theres no way to look at this staff, their collective proven recruiting prowess, beginning with JP, and their collective coaching reputations and not at least be cautiously OPTIMISTIC. And yesterday (jumping 30 spots in the recruiting rankings after 12 days on the job) shouldve done nothing but bolster that optimism imho.
